  • Here's most of a November 1973 episode with guests Robert Blake and musical guests The Carpenters. Despite attempts from multiple computers and players, my DVD transfer from 2005 stopped at around an hour. The Johnny Carson page uploaded the rest of their performance here (after where my transfer cuts off)
    • The Carpenters | Carso...
Also missed on this transfer is the Martin Poriss interview regarding his book "How to Live Cheap but Good."
It's frustrating because I can see these segments, and if I'm able to fix this, I'll upload them ASAP. All the same, I wanted to share what I could.

The Johnny Carson page has uploaded the compete Carpenters segment (including what wouldn't work with my transfer, and where my video cuts off) - it's here: th-cam.com/video/uA0A7O9xTgU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wKYb7Kx-POH3FKPe

A good example of why Carson and crew left such a huge vacuum that no one has yet come close to filling.

And there were SO many who tried to beat Carson. The smart ones were the younger guys who came along, like Arsenio Hall who very wisely decided NOT to compete with Johnny on his own turf but target a younger audience. I remember on the "Martin" sitcom, aimed at an "Urban" audience, there was a scene where someone was bragging about being on The Tonight Show, and Martin quickly asked "Johnny or Jay?" to which the guy responded "Johnny!" - Martin nodded as if to say "NOW you can brag!" Even Martin Lawrence knew nobody could ever replace Johnny Carson.

As a musician, and a teen during this era, it was worth it just to see and hear the Carpenters. They were live, they were so damn good.

Sorry the show couldn't be complete, but we're lucky to see this much of the show, commercials and promos from that era (couldn't stay up for Tonight until 1977), so thanks for what's here. Besides... there is something appropriate about a show from the Watergate era having some missing tape!

Yes, very true. The big joke at the time of Blake's acquittal (for his wife's murder) was that he and O.J. Simpson would "car-pool" to find the "real killers." Oh, just to add - Karen Carpenter sang like an Angel. Her brother Richard was equally awesome with his musical arrangements. Cheers to all!

Dear Lord, yes. I was pretty young then and whenever he was on the Tonight Show, I'd have the feeling like he could go off the edge at any moment. He definitely made for good watching. I will say, I loved him in "Baretta" because he seemed to have intense empathy for people in trouble.

@@johnsjohnson448 I followed that case - I don't know why. Maybe for the same reason most of us watched the OJ trial. While Bonnie did some despicable things, no one has the right to kill another. If you read through all the evidence, it's highly unlikely that her death was a random act of violence and Blake had motive (which was understandable but inexcusable). Remember, OJ was pronounced innocent too. Wishing you the best

    Thank you, deputay, for sharing!
I remember nites with Robert Blake. Sometimes weird. Always entertaining.
I didn't remember that Subaru was in 1973. I do remember searching for a working gas pump. Maybe I should've had a Subaru? 🙄
I was disappointed that Karen wasn't playing the drums. Back then, girls didn't do that, so it was very cool to see a girl drummer, especially on tv.
Karen playing the drums helped me in my campaign to be the (only) girl drummer in school band.
    Thanx again for sharing!
    Question, please?
Always loved to watch Baretta and Banacek.
    Are these available anywhere?

Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! As for those shows you mentioned, I think Banacek is on Amazon for free. It's also on the CoziTV channel. Baretta was on Amazon, but I haven't checked lately. I think with Robert's (alleged) issues, some platforms are not airing it, at least for now.

Karen's story fascinates me. She absolutely LOVED playing the drums and I thought it was so cool that she WAS a girl playing drums- and doing it so well that the pros were singing her praises. From what I've read in a few books about the band, Karen would have happily stayed behind those drums. The reason she was put out front was not her idea and I believe she fought it. The feeling was- and this was from her brother and others around the group- that Karen's singing was so good she needed to be featured out front. Karen was pretty self-conscious (and I always thought that showed how humble she was because the woman was beautiful) and she felt "safe" behind the drums. She protested and asked why she couldn't just continue singing from behind the drum kit, but the others' opinions won out. I think they all had a point. I think in time Karen grew more and more comfortable with being out front which is great because she was a fantastic performer. P.S. Karen inspired me to encourage my niece to play drums in her brother's band! She showed interest at first and I'd let her play my drum set when her brothers came over, but then after awhile, she lost interest altogether! I hope you accomplished your dream!
