I studied a short time with Mtra Elsa.And I go far away from this piece itself.The approach that she has about the musicality,colours and experimentation was a new point of view from me,and really opende my mind.Even if I do not study with her anymore,her few classes changed my piano playing and my understanding of the pieces.Bravo,Mtra.

Después de ser durante casi de cuatro décadas un privilegiado testigo del maravilloso fenómeno artístico entregado por Elsa Púppulo (para concluir hoy siendo su asistente), me llaman la atención algunos comentarios referidos a la serie "Elsa Púppulo Teaches How To Play Chopin Etudes"; especial asombro me producen los que dudan de la mecánica de esta enorme pianista argentina. Si bien la Mtra.Púppulo colmó el T.Colón y diversos escenarios (en su país, en Latinoamérica y Europa) durante 40 años, esporádicamente alguna supina voz solía aparecer para expresar su desacuerdo con el criterio estético exhibido en sus presentaciones; no obstante ello, lo que JAMÁS NADIE PUSO EN DUDA FUE EL CONOCIMIENTO Y EL SUPERLATIVO MANEJO DE LA MECÁNICA PIANÍSTICA expuestos en sus Bach, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Bartok Scriabin,...Chopin, etc. De ser posible, próximamente acercaré algunos mensajes que le han llegado a la Mtra.Púppulo revelando una tónica conceptual muy contrapuesta a la de los que tan livianamente han atendido al incomparablemente catedrático y artístico aporte ofrendado por esta pianista que ha llevado el pianismo argentino a las más altas cumbres. Muy buena la clase magistral de Elsa Puppulo. Hacía mucho que no la escuchaba, antes solían pasar sus interpretaciones por la radio bastante frecuentemente.
Estas clases magistrales, registradas 20 años después de LOS TRES PRINCIPIOS DE LA FORMA -un curso también incluido en TH-cam- son un complemento muy útil para redondear una cabal visión artística, mecánica y teórica de la música -anunciada ya en "Los tres principios..."- una visión muy antitética a la que proponen aquellos pianistas que fundamentan sus interpretaciones en el resbaladizo y facilista concepto de "la intuición" personal. Excelente video! Las dificultades técnicas de este Estudio de Chopin son abordadas por la Mtra. Púppulo de manera magistral. Se enfrenta sin rodeos a muchos de los problemas técnicos, casi insolubles para muchos y sus mensajes son claros y eficaces. Para la interpretación de este Estudio se necesita un dominio técnico total, independencia de dedos y flexibilidad en los espacios interdigitales para evitar tensión en las muñecas o en el peor de los casos, agarrotamiento. Elsa Púppulo desglosa esta obra con Maestría y he disfrutado de su interpretación. Gracias por compartir este fantástico video.
Yup can attest to the positive reviews. This helped me strengthen my hands and enhanced confidence. Amazed myself after following these instructions. There are more rhythmical figure you can apply to studying the speed and accuracy of the arpeggios, but also to strengthen individual fingers. That makes it really fun to practice and explore tone as you study .

No one ever points it out that this is a five-part chorale which Chopin has arpeggiated all over the keyboard. It might make a nice choral arrangement on that basis, but no one seems to have noticed it: they can't see the chorale for the arpeggios.

A wonderful teacher. I'm not a pianist but I was fascinated by this piece from the first time I heard it. The runs are so long and so many different scales/arpeggios are weaved together at times over a single bass note. It's so colorful, beautiful and seamless. One of the most ingenious pieces ever written. Can you imagine what someone like Mozart would've said about this piece?? Probably wouldn't of thought it possible back in his day.
I find myself in your comment too, except i am a pianist playing this study (or rather trying to). I also wonder how Mozart would have reacted to this. I bet he would be flabbergasted and might declare himself incompetent on the piano, although that is not the case.
@@brandonbarnes9541 No, as a pianist, mozart concerti do not touch the technical difficulty of these etudes, but that is not to say that Mozart is easy to play, it is hard because it exposes every note, it's a very different type of difficulty.

You can resolve all the diffulty etude with Cortot counseling's exercises. The hold notes exercises on the chord form are the Key of this etude. Press 10 times for finger. The result is PERFECT EXECUTION AND PERFECT ACCENT ON 5TH FINGER.
There are many ways of aproaching this etude and Elsa's isn't the best in my opinion. If you see Evgeny Kissin playing this etude, you'll realise his thumb goes in and out the keyboard. There is no elastic thumb at all. Elasticity is in the wrist. Ascending, the pivot is always the index finger. Descending, right training of all fingers and the right elastic movement of the wrist are the most important things you need to play this etude professionally. In fact, if you musically comprehend this like the bow grip Chopin conceived, wrist is the absolute protagonist. We are lucky of having youtube to observe and analize by seeing videos time and time again.

I cannot see how you are making such a smooth transition past your right hand to include the thumb, i have short arthritic stiff thumbs since they were twisted by a user, so i cannot bend thrm at the second joint, it looks i,possible to achieve smooth transitions for me.

A pesar del cariño por esta excelente pianista, hay un video en TH-cam que es muy superior para aprender este glorioso Etude. Es por el pianista Ukraniano que participó en la competicion Chopin en Varsovia in 2010, Denis Zhdarov, in th-cam.com/video/frh62OnH5yk/w-d-xo.html. Denis Zhdarov es un fantástico profesor de piano, recomiendo buscar todos sus videos y cursos en TH-cam.
Donde puedo conseguir el DVD completo? También me gustaría que hiciera vídeos tutoriales de Czerny Op.740 y Op.365 este último libro es más dificil que los 27 Estudios de Chopin y sería de gran ayuda algún vídeo.
People very naively think that these mechanics are a account of all the critical matters of technique. Worst of all are great pianists who actually have very little idea what is actually involved in their technique. The miracle is that they can still play after working and "explaining" what they do.
How true. They found their way naturally without any realization as to how and why. And cannot pass on through teaching and worse yet, cannot see what is wrong with student's technique. Many have said that even the great conservatories merely accepted only those had have already attained their technique and either could not teach it or had no interest in teaching it to lesser applicants. (NOTE: I'm a structural engineer specializing in vibration (the defining language of piano technique) so this is especially onerous to me.)
No existe un absoluto para tocar a Chopin...el maestro Claudio Arrau decía que Lo importante del arte del piano es ser uno mismo y entregar la recreación de la obra lo más relajado posible para no entorpecer los sentidos. Desde este punto de vista, cada uno tiene sus propias reglas de relajación y comodidad. De todos modos las indicaciones de la maestra Elsa Puppulo son de gran ayuda, dado que debe haber un punto de partida cuando nunca se han visto este tipo de obras, pero no es una regla determinante para todos los pianistas...
@marcela mariani Francesco Libetta y Jean Frederick Neuburger gracias a que tocaron toda la Op.740 de Czerny lograron tocar mejor Chopin de lo que lo hacen los demás, hacer la Op.740 es un logro monstruoso y más aún a la velocidad.

the only thing i disagree with, and this may just be due to the shape/size of my hand (i can reach a tenth easily) is that when she crosses the thumb under in c major im not seeing the arch that smoothly transitions to the next arp. off the top of my head, i think bar 13-21, this will become a problem. she does it in other areas (where the notes are played correctly). 10:40 is the movement you want learn throughout, and thoroughly. i dont care much for valentina lisitsas chopin, but her technique in this etude is noteworthy.
Long Nguyễn each bar has different volumes and also colour ie going up one bar will be lower volume than going down or the opposite this is seperate from the cresendo decresendo and the soft pedal helps with these subtle dynamics as well as notable changes in texture colour that you can exagerate unfortunately there are few who are musically gifted enough to feel and interprate these colours and different importance volume or intensity of spirit going up and then down like a question and answer or statement then a question or wave crashing in then washing out sometimes the question is more important than the answer and vice versa. askenazy and daniil tripinov are good examples of much more complex dynamics and colour
I may be wrong but seems to me that Mme Puppulo plays the "arpeggi" on the white keys continuously alternating the first and second finger (thumb and index). That's the reason for which she plays some parts faster than others (those involving black keys). Generally I think this is a bad way to approach this étude, since its main contribution is to enhance the hand to play the "arpeggi" in a opening and closing movement of fingers and palm. Moreover, doing so you'll never have a perfect simmetry among notes.

No one ever points it out that this is a five-part chorale which Chopin has arpeggiated all over the keyboard. It might make a nice choral arrangement on that basis, but no one seems to have noticed it: they can't see the chorale for the arpeggios.

A wonderful teacher. I'm not a pianist but I was fascinated by this piece from the first time I heard it. The runs are so long and so many different scales/arpeggios are weaved together at times over a single bass note. It's so colorful, beautiful and seamless. One of the most ingenious pieces ever written. Can you imagine what someone like Mozart would've said about this piece?? Probably wouldn't of thought it possible back in his day.

I find myself in your comment too, except i am a pianist playing this study (or rather trying to). I also wonder how Mozart would have reacted to this. I bet he would be flabbergasted and might declare himself incompetent on the piano, although that is not the case.
@@brandonbarnes9541 No, as a pianist, mozart concerti do not touch the technical difficulty of these etudes, but that is not to say that Mozart is easy to play, it is hard because it exposes every note, it's a very different type of difficulty.

You can resolve all the diffulty etude with Cortot counseling's exercises. The hold notes exercises on the chord form are the Key of this etude. Press 10 times for finger. The result is PERFECT EXECUTION AND PERFECT ACCENT ON 5TH FINGER.

There are many ways of aproaching this etude and Elsa's isn't the best in my opinion. If you see Evgeny Kissin playing this etude, you'll realise his thumb goes in and out the keyboard. There is no elastic thumb at all. Elasticity is in the wrist. Ascending, the pivot is always the index finger. Descending, right training of all fingers and the right elastic movement of the wrist are the most important things you need to play this etude professionally. In fact, if you musically comprehend this like the bow grip Chopin conceived, wrist is the absolute protagonist. We are lucky of having youtube to observe and analize by seeing videos time and time again.

I cannot see how you are making such a smooth transition past your right hand to include the thumb, i have short arthritic stiff thumbs since they were twisted by a user, so i cannot bend thrm at the second joint, it looks i,possible to achieve smooth transitions for me.

Denis Zhdarov es un fantástico profesor de piano, recomiendo buscar todos sus videos y cursos en TH-cam.

People very naively think that these mechanics are a account of all the critical matters of technique. Worst of all are great pianists who actually have very little idea what is actually involved in their technique. The miracle is that they can still play after working and "explaining" what they do.
How true. They found their way naturally without any realization as to how and why. And cannot pass on through teaching and worse yet, cannot see what is wrong with student's technique. Many have said that even the great conservatories merely accepted only those had have already attained their technique and either could not teach it or had no interest in teaching it to lesser applicants. (NOTE: I'm a structural engineer specializing in vibration (the defining language of piano technique) so this is especially onerous to me.)

No existe un absoluto para tocar a Chopin...el maestro Claudio Arrau decía que Lo importante del arte del piano es ser uno mismo y entregar la recreación de la obra lo más relajado posible para no entorpecer los sentidos. Desde este punto de vista, cada uno tiene sus propias reglas de relajación y comodidad. De todos modos las indicaciones de la maestra Elsa Puppulo son de gran ayuda, dado que debe haber un punto de partida cuando nunca se han visto este tipo de obras, pero no es una regla determinante para todos los pianistas...

the only thing i disagree with, and this may just be due to the shape/size of my hand (i can reach a tenth easily) is that when she crosses the thumb under in c major im not seeing the arch that smoothly transitions to the next arp. off the top of my head, i think bar 13-21, this will become a problem. she does it in other areas (where the notes are played correctly). 10:40 is the movement you want learn throughout, and thoroughly. i dont care much for valentina lisitsas chopin, but her technique in this etude is noteworthy.

Long Nguyễn each bar has different volumes and also colour ie going up one bar will be lower volume than going down or the opposite this is seperate from the cresendo decresendo and the soft pedal helps with these subtle dynamics as well as notable changes in texture colour that you can exagerate unfortunately there are few who are musically gifted enough to feel and interprate these colours and different importance volume or intensity of spirit going up and then down like a question and answer or statement then a question or wave crashing in then washing out sometimes the question is more important than the answer and vice versa. askenazy and daniil tripinov are good examples of much more complex dynamics and colour
I may be wrong but seems to me that Mme Puppulo plays the "arpeggi" on the white keys continuously alternating the first and second finger (thumb and index). That's the reason for which she plays some parts faster than others (those involving black keys). Generally I think this is a bad way to approach this étude, since its main contribution is to enhance the hand to play the "arpeggi" in a opening and closing movement of fingers and palm. Moreover, doing so you'll never have a perfect simmetry among notes.
This is an alternate universe where Brian May learned piano instead of guitar.

Los estudios de Chopin están muy sobrevalorados, en concursos se debería pedir algo de el Op.365, 409 o 756 de Czerny que son por mucho muy superiores a los 27 Estudios de Chopin tanto técnica como musicalmente.
