    There is an alternative to the solar compass. We all have button compasses and other small cheapies that died from bubbles. Carefully crack the case, and remove the disk. That can be slipped into your wallet and floated on a palm full of of water. A small button compass, you can float it in a bottle cap! Just remember to double check that it is accurate, because sometimes it is more than the bubble.

      I honestly hope not I'm not a supporter of a company built off a lier of one's military background . I hated to see Kelly and GBGB go to work for someone like that but guess the money outshines the dishonor . I remember Dave when all he had was a Utube channel then he lied to land a spot on Dual Survival and he honestly didn't know much about friction fires Cody had to show him lol. Anyways I have my reasons to be a non supporter of the guy. Andrew has a great potential to start his own School without the need to piggyback off pathfinder school and unrealistically I don't see how getting some patches from his school makes for a survival trainer all these skills can be learned by oneself just need to practice .

      I was here before the Corporal recommended it. I totally agree that the Major has no need to work for someone else, unless he just doesn't want to be saddled with the "business" and other "admin" aspects of it. But I'd love to see the Major open his own school ! I'm a veteran and not a fan of stolen valor. What I have of that I EARNED, and didn't have to fudge.

    • @erickmo1188
      @erickmo1188 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@treerat6959 I agree that what Dave did was pretty shameful. But I’ll say this, no one is free from error. The thing that separates us the most is how we act and react when we make mistakes and how we attempt to redeem ourselves. Making a public apology was a good start and to be honest I feel like most people wouldn’t have had the guts to do that. Since that, he has moved on and provided a great outlet for military veterans such as Kelly and GBGB to continue earning a living do something they love. Dave’s content on Dual survival was mostly just entertainment, it was on cable tv after all. But Dave, among the others associated with the Pathfinder School, have continued to put out a high standard of content within the topic of survival. But hey, just my opinion. I appreciate yours as well

    The Estwing hatchet is one of the most underrated pieces of gear in the survival/bushcraft world. It's all a matter of getting a proper edge on it (which it does NOT come with) and it'll do anything those $200+ boutique hatchets will do (I know because I stupidly bought them, and then found out the only difference is they came with a proper edge), and you have a nigh indestructible tool.
    Tip for those old bags: the snaps won't line up, but you can put them in a modern Gore-Tex bivy sack, and close the sack separately from the bag to help the water resistance

    • @Jeff-jg7jh

      Snaps aren't hard to rebuild.

    • @Northanteus
      @Northanteus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, GideonsTactical did a comparison between the Estwing and much more expensive hatchet. $35 vs $135 in the title of that video. He was shocked at how well the Estwing did. He did sharpen his. I remember leaving a comment there basically saying how pathetic it was for the expensive axe company to charge so much just for a sharpen on the axe edge. I prefer the full tang strength of the Estwing anyway, even if it had a slightly inferior edge (imagining it did).

      @@benterwellen I'm a veteran, I know about Canterbury from what I "heard" on YT and read on-line. I'm not much on TV, especially the "reality shows". So I'd not heard of him prior to YT. If you want to be technical, Canterbury violated Federal law, seeking or receiving personal gain thru deception, by stolen valor. He embellished his military records. Be that as it may, I will say that to be promoted to the rank of Major (O-4) and of Rangers (as opposed to a non combat arms billet), you have to know what you are doing ! You don't slide or glad hand your way into that. That's good enough for me. And I come from a military family so I don't waste my time on BS.

It has different colors as you cycle through but the last one is multi-colored. When you put it through the motion you get a psychedelic effect that looks like railroad tracks of two different colors then changes color every few seconds.

    Neat trick with the L-Head Flashlight ; BUT , can you start a fire using that same Flashlight with NO Batteries , NO Wires , NO Steel Wool , and a burned out Bulb ? I CAN ! ----- Actually it's quite simple . Gather some dry grass (the darker the better) and twist it into a somewhat tight rod-shape about a quarter inch in diameter . Next , remove the reflector from the flashlight , and remove the bulb . Now , push your grass ''rod'' through the bulb hole from the back side until it's about a quarter of the way into the reflector . Now aim the reflector at the SUN (as long as you can see the Sun , this works) and slowly push the grass forward until you get the Focal Point (that concentrated dot of reflected sunlight) on the end of your grass ''rod'' . Within moments you should have a spark if not flames . ---- This DOES work ; I'm a smoker and I've been lighting my cigarettes (during the Day) for many many years with nothing more than an old flashlight reflector . Definitely gets peoples attention . lol .

    Love your videos. Wish I would have learned these skills in the Army. I was in in the 80s and was in an MI unit. Didn’t get this training.

    Thank you for your military service and excellent videos. Using the flashlight with the steel wool was an excellent idea that I never would have thought of.

    I did see the shout-out, but I was following you long before that, you both give very good information, I like the fact you dive into the military stealth as well.

    Estwing and 110 knife will last forever plus 4 days and do all you ask of it
    My hatchet hasn't looked that nice in years. I had to take a sharp nail and stipple the handle on mine.

    Totally digging the soap dish first aid kit. We used to use to old plastic containers water proof and holds a lot of med supplies. this is readily available and works great. thanks for the tips.

    Andrew ! Was watching your videos before the shout out by the Corporal! Please keep making these videos !
    Two questions though.
    #1 why no make shift rake (like Shawn usually highlights in his videos.
    #2 Why wouldn't you want the sticks longer for your shelter in case it rains (so you could tuck in further *despite your mummy bag) ?

    Very good video, a lot of basics shown. One thing I thought was missing: How did you select the wood for the fire-board and spindle for the bow drill set?

    Great to see you on the trail today! Excellent training topics today. I started out with the M49 Mountain Bag “fart sack” too, absolutely hated it… by the time I was issued mine from CIF it had probably lost 50% or more of its insulator value I figure… many cold nights in Korea while in the field, thank God for the poncho liner to wrap up into. Nice use of the GI spoon for the bearing block! Keep up the Fire!
