Having spent much of my life on Long Island, I often worked in the Hamptons. East Hampton is very nice, a community of the rich and famous, well kept, and safe, but I personally liked Sag Harbor, just my opinion. Overall, Long Island is overpopulated, and expensive, traffic is regularly horrible, and not a place most people, including me, can afford.
Are you aware you walked right past the entrance to Robert Downey Jr's historical pinwheel home? 121 Main St but it's not listed with the other three addresses (117, 119 & 123) by design. If you look on Google Earth it will show you but Google maps takes you to the back where there is a fence near the school.
I live right down the block from main street. The Hamptons is super overrated and too far from the real world. The traffic especially in the summer time is the worst. A 20 min drive can easily turn into 50min. Oh and the streets suck also. Potholes are everywhere.
But is it worse than anywhere else in the US. Potholes are rife in California, which is one of the richest states. What the Hamptons have is a charm and liveability that is rare these days. The only problem is the cost of living there.
There are lots of little towns on Long Island just as adorable only for regular people, and not the crazy city swarms… Northport, Port Jefferson, are Awesome!

Sag Harbor has changed a lot the last few years. It is probably the busiest area in the Hamptons now.

You can take the LIRR, the Hamptons Jitney or drive there. It's about 2.5 hours by car.

Very similar to Main St on Nantucket only not as quaint.
During winter time this place is a ghost town...............They never tell you about that!

Interesting, I haven't seen many potholes here in the last decade. Traffic can be bad but most of the time I just take the backroads.
