Season 5 will always be the best comeback of TV shows in history. It really amazes me how much Oliver changed from season 1 flashbacks, after all those tortures, souffering and training he got way more experienced and matured a lot. Basically this cold-blooded murderer and cynical version of him is what we have in season 1 present day and this gets me so many chills. All flashbacks based in Russia are the best ones we got on Arrow to me.
The flashbacks to Russia could have been better, the function of the flashbacks is to show Oliver's transformation, in the first and second seasons he learned to use a bow and arrows, parkour, fight, and train with calisthenics with Yao Fei, Slade and Shado, in Hong Kong he learned to speak Chinese and Maseo forged a sense of justice in Oliver and Amanda caused Oliver's bloodlust, in the first episode of the fourth season he goes to Coast City to fight crime, he just needed to improve his hand-to-hand combat, train sambo , learn to speak Russian, but he didn't show him practicing sambo. The fourth season's flashbacks proved completely pointless.
5 years after watching the first episode of the Arrow, seeing the moments before the opening scene hits different. Amazing show, and the greatest of all time in my opinion...
The name of the island they found me on is Lian Yu. It's Mandarin for purgatory. I've been stranded here for five years. I've dreamt of my rescue every cold, black night since then. For five years I've had only one thought, one goal... survive. Survive and one day return home. The island held many dangers. To live, I had to make myself more than what I was, to forge myself into a weapon. I am returning. Not the boy who was shipwrecked, but the man who will bring justice to those who have poisoned my city. My name is Oliver Queen."
I watched all the flashbacks paying attention to the things Oliver learned in each of the seasons and comparing to the Archer that we see in the present day plot in the first season, he learned Archery and Jiu-Jitsu from Yao Fei and Shado, Muay Thai and parkour with Slade, he learned to investigate, get evidence, track people (although they didn't show it on screen) with Maseo and it was also with Maseo that he developed a sense of justice, learned to speak Mandarin, I think he just needed to train Calisthenics Workout and learning Sambo, things that are common in Russia, but unfortunately they didn't show his physical preparation and implied that Oliver learned to speak Russian with a dictionary.
@@richos07 Yes, but the strength he gained in that training did not last for the next 3 years, he had to have shown more of his training, besides the exercises, the diet, meals etc.... Just like he didn't show Maseo teaching him to tracking people and investigating suspects, finding evidence, we know by logic that Maseo and Talia taught him that, but the series didn't show it.
@@SuperOveride yeah it would’ve been good if in the Russia and Hong Kong flashbacks, you see him repping out pull ups, one armed push ups and handstand push ups in his down time
Season 1, 2 and 5 are masterpieces Season 6 and 7 could have been much better Season 3 is not awful but not good either Season 8 is a depressive season Season 4 doesn't exist
I do have to say that after watching all of these flashbacks and then watching season 1 with all this in mind it does all does make sense why would he do everything that he does
I think they originally planned to have him be in Russia for the Season 3 Flashbacks, then pushed it back to Season 4 until they had no choice but to do it in Season 5. I'm glad they saved it for his Final Year.
@@SuperOveride Honestly, I think he should have went to Russia in Year 4 and then Lian Yu is his final year, so that way, he can grow his beard and hair out. This was when we were seeing Oliver at his best in terms of h2h combat and you see how in S1 it all came full circle. People were wondering in the flashbacks as to when Oliver would become an expert combatant, the seeds were sown around the S4 flashbacks - especially in that Conklin fight but it's really here in the S5 flashbacks where Oliver was fighting in the way we were used to seeing him in the present day. You can even notice here 2:15 when he fights in his iconic Green Arrow (The Hood) suit for the first time it's still very raw, of course it's a great action sequence as he's able to transition using the bow and his h2h skills well, but in some of the attacks he takes longer, but it's a given as it's the first time that he's fighting in that style. Later on during the flashbacks this gradually improves and by S1, he can seamlessly transition between the two.
It's because in the flashbacks of the fourth season, Oliver already showed the personality he had in season 1 of the main plot, but due to the Flashpoint caused by Barry, Oliver's personality in the Russia flashbacks changed, he went back to having a silly personality like he had in Hong Kong

Right!!?!?!? Actually crazy how for 8 YEARS, I would be stoked when the new episode would come out!!

Season 5 definitely had the best action out of all the seasons for me. A lot of it too.

This version of Oliver really got active!!!
Oliver raised Susan's suspicion for acting like Kapushion, I think he could have become an NKVDemon, only as a hero and not a villain.
Before there was John Wick, there was Arrow.
I was so hyped for season 5 to get closure on his 5 years away and to findout how he chose the way he got bak home and why
