As you were talking about the match girls, I thought about the radium girls - I just learned about them today by hearing part of an interview with the movie's director on public radio here in Atlanta, GA. I had never heard of them before. Over and over again, humankind seems to find ways to exploit the most vulnerable. While it is upsetting to learn about, we MUST continue to learn in the hope that we will change the future. Thank you, Dr. Kat, for all of your hard work!
I knew about the Jack the Ripper museum because I love true crime. I had hoped to visit it one day. I didn’t know about the history of it. Now I will never go. Dear Dr Kat, just when I thought that I couldn't love you and your work any more than I do, you get up onto your soapbox and Wow, just Wow!!! You have articulated everything I feel about the East End of London and it's people, where I worked in the A&E of a local hospital and also had the pleasure of living in that vibrant and fascinating area for a number of years. I have moved on but absolutely will never return to visit Mark's sick misogynistic fantasy of a so called museum, which was created under completely false pretences, he should be ashamed. As if the lives and deaths of the psychopath's victims weren't pathetic / tragic enough, I agree that at the very least he could be aware of the number of today's women who are suffering and dying as we speak, in our "civilised society ". My family are from the East End, and we have traced family to the workhouses. I hope some of the women in my family were there and fighting too. They were there with the Dagenham Ford strikes - another powerful moment for women in East London history. Thanks for the great content, love your work!
I very much approve of your soapbox, very well said! I’m currently reading The Five by Hallie Rubenhold, the story of the five women who were murdered, who have been very much misrepresented by history. I highly recommend it to those who are interested in the social history of the late 19th century.
I agree with you. To "celebrate" the horrific violence against the victims of the ripper in such a gratuitous way is despicable. These women's stories about their tragic lives should told with the respect they deserve. Thank you for this video.
Relax, they are dead. They don't care. Besides, these were hard drinking, hard living rebel rousing females. These weren't delicate emotionally crippled flowers of society. Would highly reccomend reading 'The Five' - a book giving really very detailed biographies of the 5 women killed in the canonical Jack the Ripper murders. Incredibly interesting, immersive, tragic, and also made me angry about how society labelled them and that impacted on how the murders were reported and investigated

Your discussion of the history of the Matchwomen of the East End brought to mind Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl"; a story I read as a child. I was saddened by that tale, but never believed there was any reality to its content, that people could be so cruel. It wasn't until I was older and learned about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in New York City (the building is located across the street from what later became my alma mater, New York University) that I realized that such cruelty existed, and still exists. Thank you for sharing their story and being a voice for those courageous women. I am in agreement on the matter of the 'bait and switch' that occurred on the promise museum. Wondering how many palms were greased to allow that to happen!! I too, understand the anger.

I found your channel recently during lockdown and it has been a joy. Interesting, informative, well researched and presented. I knew a little of the match girls because my grandmother told me, she worked in the Lancashire cotton mills from a frighteningly young age but you have put flesh on the bones of an important story. As for your rant, well said. I believe you very eloquently expressed the sentiments of many. I was unaware of the existence of this morbid ripper Disneyland but I would have been appalled. Thank you for your efforts, I'm thoroughly enjoying working my way through your back catalogue. Have you ever considered having a look into the historical smuggling around the Kent coast? There's some interesting events there,such as the burning of the fishing fleet by the customs men in an attempt to stop the illicit activities and there's a particular interesting character from Romney marsh called dr Syn who is locally famous and still celebrated today in that area. Something slightly different to consider. 😀

Great talk and well done on the museum activity. Agree all the way. My great grandfather was a ;policeman on the beat in Mile End and Whitechapel when the Ripper was active, a fact that my grandchildren find amazing since they were fans of Ripper Street in spite of my telling them it was more dramatic than historically accurate. Good luck with the museum and l will check out the archives when , if ever l get back to London. l spent some of my university years researching in the East end and the library at Stepney - is it still there ? My aunt was also a union rep for Tate and Lyall in the post war years so all the history of that time is mine also.

Agree on the "museum." In the states, we have a tv channel called Lifetime. When it originally premiered years ago, it was touted as a station for (and about) women. This is almost celebrated, yet were are the real and true East London hero's eg the nurses from the 1950's, the women who tried to educate the poor and to lovingly support the community men, women and children for quite literally decades after decades. Yet this trashy sad story seems to be the focus. You Britts have so very many people who truly deserve to be honoured.
Very well said and done. I have a strong tie paternally to England. Both grandfather and grandmother born and immigrated in the early part of the last century. My father and grandfather were union men. I am also a fan of true crime and a feminist. I agree a museum for Jack the Ripper should not include gratuitous violence. Those women who were his victims were just trying to survive in a hostile environment. I applaud you getting on your "soapbox" as you call it. Women and marginalized populations need support from people who are able to reach the masses. I would love to visit the women's museum to hear and see exhibits about how much these women helped to forward the cause of women to become better represented in democratic societies. Our countries, Great Britain and the USA, have great traditions of fighting for suffrage and unionizing. This was an extremely enjoyable presentation. Dr Kat, I subscribed in lockdown to your channel, and have worked my way through many of your excellent contributions. I didn't watch this until today - I'm afraid I was a bit meh, victorians, meh. As a seven eight year old I made Tudor costumes for my 6 sindy dolls, the tudors have remained my guilty passion, and if anyone mentions the corn laws, well, I would prefer to boil my head and stick pins in my eyes. But EAST END 1888 rolled on. I was transfixed. Your passion for injustice against women, and the strength, unity and sheer bravery of those women is a shining beacon for us all. It behoves us to always speak up when we witness injustice. And as for the Jack the Ripper museum? Maybe the same people can bring us a more up-to-date one. I propose a Jimmy Saville museum complete with hospital beds, Jim'll fix it badges and muffled children sobbing? Classy! Hi Dr Kat, thank you for your history of the Match Women of Bow. This is a thrilling and powerful example of relatively early (from my local perspective) important investigative journalism leading to successful union building - despite the employer attempting to scuttle it. While I did not reach your part of the East End at Bow, as a visiting North American "colonial" (okay, Commonwealth citizen) I spent a year in 2017-2018 living on the Isle of Dogs. I was there as an older student to study London's early modern playhouse culture (roughly 1575-1642) in its literary and performance context, and also in its broader socio-historical context. And while there, I also enjoyed several visits to the City of London Museum branch at Canary Wharf (fascinating explanations of the docks over the centuries, and the role of slavery in the growth of the British Empire), as well as various other history and art museums - and many live performances. One highlight was seeing the art collection of Charles I gathered back together for an exhibition at the Royal Academy. But also enjoyed wandering around the Isle of Dogs (also walking through the tunnel to Greenwich), the Thames Walk up to Limehouse (and the Thames-side pub part-owned by Sir Ian McKellen), walking up to Whitechapel, and on into the City of London. At the level of modern popular culture intersecting with East End of London social history, I continue to enjoy the band Madness' album, "The Liberty of Norton Folgate", in which the music and lyrics of a short suite recall the history that bit of the East End. I had already been looking at some history of the 'liberties' because they had housed some of the early modern playhouses, being outside the control of London's civic government - as you know more about them than I do, no doubt. (I have only recently discovered your TH-cam channel and have been binge-watching your videos and enjoying them. Thank you!)

Just recently found you and have listened to about ten episodes so far and really appreciated this one the most. As a child my father would exclaim “the things that have been done in the name of religion” (1950’s) and I myself think the royals are royals because they had the best armies and sharpest axes. I've only recently discovered your channel and am loving what I'm hearing but this one, wow! My late mum was born in Bow and I in Barking, with generations of East Enders in my past, so this was particularly fascinating. Your rant was sadly appropriate for this current time, with yet another female murder victim in the news and the outpouring of anger and grief felt by so many women. Thank you for speaking so eloquently and powerfully from the heart.
Dr. Kat and her soapbox are the reason I subscribed. I visited east end for a Jack the Ripper tour in the summer of 2018 and felt very ill at ease being a tourist in a place where so much trauma was endured. Luckily, I was there with a history professor who was dedicated to the stories of the women who were murdered, and we had a very long discussion as a class about the fetishization of the murders. If you haven’t already read Hallie Rubenhold’s “The Five” I cannot recommend it enough. It really changed the whole story for me!

As an American with a classics degree, I seem to have let English/British history slip by largely unnoticed except where it intersects with US history. I am learning so much and putting so many loose threads of knowledge (like Henry VIII and his wives) into a larger context. Your videos are amazing, well-crafted, well-researched, academically astute, but also accessible. You really do present a fair view of history. I thought this video, the content, and the objection to the Jack the Ripper "museum" warranted I resolve that issue. I am now subscribed and will receive notifications, and this video has received my wholehearted thumbs up. Thank you for your fantastic videos, and the time and effort you put into them. I found your channel recently during lockdown and it has been a joy. Interesting, informative, well researched and presented. I knew a little of the match girls because my grandmother told me, she worked in the Lancashire cotton mills from a frighteningly young age but you have put flesh on the bones of an important story. As for your rant, well said. I believe you very eloquently expressed the sentiments of many. I was unaware of the existence of this morbid ripper Disneyland but I would have been appalled. Thank you for your efforts, I'm thoroughly enjoying working my way through your back catalogue. Have you ever considered having a look into the historical smuggling around the Kent coast? There's some interesting events there,such as the burning of the fishing fleet by the customs men in an attempt to stop the illicit activities and there's a particular interesting character from Romney marsh called dr Syn who is locally famous and still celebrated today in that area. Something slightly different to consider. 😀

Great talk and well done on the museum activity. Agree all the way. My great grandfather was a ;policeman on the beat in Mile End and Whitechapel when the Ripper was active, a fact that my grandchildren find amazing since they were fans of Ripper Street in spite of my telling them it was more dramatic than historically accurate. Good luck with the museum and l will check out the archives when , if ever l get back to London. l spent some of my university years researching in the East end and the library at Stepney - is it still there ? My aunt was also a union rep for Tate and Lyall in the post war years so all the history of that time is mine also.

Agree on the "museum." In the states, we have a tv channel called Lifetime. When it originally premiered years ago, it was touted as a station for (and about) women. I called it the "I hate women channel." The programming seemed to be rape, murder, abuse movies. I have no idea what they show on it now.

Here, here, re the jack the ripper situation! This is almost celebrated, yet were are the real and true East London hero's eg the nurses from the 1950's, the women who tried to educate the poor and to lovingly support the community men, women and children for quite literally decades after decades. Yet this trashy sad story seems to be the focus. You Britts have so very many people who truly deserve to be honoured.

Very well said and done. I have a strong tie paternally to England. Both grandfather and grandmother born and immigrated in the early part of the last century. My father and grandfather were union men. I am also a fan of true crime and a feminist. I agree a museum for Jack the Ripper should not include gratuitous violence. Those women who were his victims were just trying to survive in a hostile environment. I applaud you getting on your "soapbox" as you call it. Women and marginalized populations need support from people who are able to reach the masses. I would love to visit the women's museum to hear and see exhibits about how much these women helped to forward the cause of women to become better represented in democratic societies. Our countries, Great Britain and the USA, have great traditions of fighting for suffrage and unionizing. This was an extremely enjoyable presentation. Telling the stories if the past is very important to us moving forward. Thank you so much for this channel.

Dr Kat, I subscribed in lockdown to your channel, and have worked my way through many of your excellent contributions. I didn't watch this until today - I'm afraid I was a bit meh, victorians, meh. As a seven eight year old I made Tudor costumes for my 6 sindy dolls, the tudors have remained my guilty passion, and if anyone mentions the corn laws, well, I would prefer to boil my head and stick pins in my eyes. But EAST END 1888 rolled on. I was transfixed. Your passion for injustice against women, and the strength, unity and sheer bravery of those women is a shining beacon for us all. It behoves us to always speak up when we witness injustice. And as for the Jack the Ripper museum? Maybe the same people can bring us a more up-to-date one. I propose a Jimmy Saville museum complete with hospital beds, Jim'll fix it badges and muffled children sobbing? Classy! Perhaps we could set up a go fund me page and split the divvies, you do the fact, I do the costumes, whatchasay? are you in?

Hi Dr Kat, thank you for your history of the Match Women of Bow. This is a thrilling and powerful example of relatively early (from my local perspective) important investigative journalism leading to successful union building - despite the employer attempting to scuttle it.
While I did not reach your part of the East End at Bow, as a visiting North American "colonial" (okay, Commonwealth citizen) I spent a year in 2017-2018 living on the Isle of Dogs. I was there as an older student to study London's early modern playhouse culture (roughly 1575-1642) in its literary and performance context, and also in its broader socio-historical context. And while there, I also enjoyed several visits to the City of London Museum branch at Canary Wharf (fascinating explanations of the docks over the centuries, and the role of slavery in the growth of the British Empire), as well as various other history and art museums - and many live performances. One highlight was seeing the art collection of Charles I gathered back together for an exhibition at the Royal Academy. But also enjoyed wandering around the Isle of Dogs (also walking through the tunnel to Greenwich), the Thames Walk up to Limehouse (and the Thames-side pub part-owned by Sir Ian McKellen), walking up to Whitechapel, and on into the City of London.
At the level of modern popular culture intersecting with East End of London social history, I continue to enjoy the band Madness' album, "The Liberty of Norton Folgate", in which the music and lyrics of a short suite recall the history that bit of the East End. I had already been looking at some history of the 'liberties' because they had housed some of the early modern playhouses, being outside the control of London's civic government - as you know more about them than I do, no doubt.

As a child my father would exclaim “the things that have been done in the name of religion” (1950’s) and I myself think the royals are royals because they had the best armies and sharpest axes. I like the biographies of the talented such as the painters or writers like the Brontes and Dickens who also reflect a truer picture of the actual conditions of their times. My late mum was born in Bow and I in Barking, with generations of East Enders in my past, so this was particularly fascinating. Your rant was sadly appropriate for this current time, with yet another female murder victim in the news and the outpouring of anger and grief felt by so many women. Dr. Kat and her soapbox are the reason I subscribed. I visited east end for a Jack the Ripper tour in the summer of 2018 and felt very ill at ease being a tourist in a place where so much trauma was endured. Luckily, I was there with a history professor who was dedicated to the stories of the women who were murdered, and we had a very long discussion as a class about the fetishization of the murders. If you haven’t already read Hallie Rubenhold’s “The Five” I cannot recommend it enough. It really changed the whole story for me!

Dr. Kat, I discovered your channel just a few weeks ago and I have watched soooo many of your videos. As an American with a classics degree, I seem to have let English/British history slip by largely unnoticed except where it intersects with US history. I am learning so much and putting so many loose threads of knowledge (like Henry VIII and his wives) into a larger context. Your videos are amazing, well-crafted, well-researched, academically astute, but also accessible. You really do present a fair view of history. That said, feel free to jump on that soapbox anytime you need to. Put those money-grubbing “museum” people in their place. They lied and they need to be held accountable. Thanks for all you do!
