    Angus Young and Tony Iommi VS Slash and Jimmy Page
    EDIT:
    To all the butthurt fanboys that's says something along the following lines:
    "slash isn't on the same level as the others" (maybe not, but he's one of the most famous Les Paul players)
    "Jimmy Page used a Tele in the studio" (I know, but most picture him with a Les Paul or his EDS-1275)
    "Slash and Jimmy Page used double neck SGs" (no, that guitar model is named EDS-1275 (EDS=Electric Double Spanish) has nothing in common with an SG except for the shape. The tone is even more similar to a Les Paul due to the increased mass)
    Please remember that I just named two of the most famous/legendary users of each model just for fun. Don't get your panties in a twist

    I have both: a Gibson Les Paul Custom and an SG Maestro Vibrola 61. Until the end of 2020, I was playing non-stop with my Les Paul; however, when I bought an SG in October 2020, I immediately fell in love with that piece of Mahogany/Rosewood. It sounds so direct and into your face and on top of that, I prefer its clean sound way more than on the Les Paul. My opinion. :-)

  • @TwisterDoesGaming

    I prefer the SG more. I have longer arms and the neck is set farther forward and that makes it more comfortable for me to play. Plus, the SG costs about an arm and a leg less, weighs a shit ton less, and still sounds pretty much identical to a Les Paul.

    • @WayneMandible
      @WayneMandible 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I can totally agree on all points except that it doesn't sound identical at all in my experience... unless you can point me to a particular SG that does? My Les Paul is a beast to lug around anymore, so I'd be willing to give another SG a try. I tried making the switch years ago and ended up eating the restocking fee to return the SG after comparing it to the sound of my Les Paul.

      It can sound kick ass with clean tone too! They are such magnificent guitars. I LOVE mine with the gain up and a bit of reverb. The great thing about SGs also is that they sound great with a variety of amps whereas the Les Paul only sounds good with select few and doesn't pair well with Fender amps.

      I’m coming from my first strat and loving my HSS because of the humbucker. I’m looking at a better quality fender strat but SG and one of those double cut PRS in the lower price range are the two others I’m choosing between for an intermediate guitarist who needs one guitar for blues, rock, funk, and your old fashioned harder but not metal rock. My conundrum is that the SG is so light and easy on the back (and looks so cool), but the richer tone of the LP almost makes up for its weight. I think the SG would benefit from a slightly more substantial body, but that would change its character. The LP is almost perfect except that it wears me out after a set. Tough choice. So I alternate 'em. The LP is better for clean stuff, though, so for jazzier stuff I pull up a chair.

      Likewise I never thought too much about the SG, until I tried one. I like the attack/bite, weight, balance, neck attachment and fret access. Although my Les Paul is better for some musical styles (where a warmer/richer/fuller tone is beneficial), overall I prefer the SG. At nearly 10lbs, my LP feels like a boat anchor compared to my SG at around 7lb.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I always thought the SG was just an uglier, worse version of a les Paul. But I recently got a brand new Epiphone SG Muse for Christmas a few weeks ago. And it just blew me away. I went to the guitar shop not having anything in specific in mind. I had an idea of trying a few metal guitars like ibanez and Jackson because I always wanted to get a super fast playing metal guitar but then switch the metal pickups in them for something that's more vintage, like some Gibson PAFs or the Seymour Duncan seth lovers (which are also PAFs, they just don't have the rights to the name "PAF" so they name em after the guy who invented them). I still want to do that one day, get a metal guitar and make it sound vintage, even better if I can get one with a humbucker and 2 single coils so as to get the strat tone that's still my favourite tone
      But yeah I got there and tried everything. And surprisingly, the Epiphone SG Muse was by far the most playable guitar there. It just felt as smooth as butter. Everything comes easy on it. Maybe it's because I spent years and years not caring about gear anymore and just playing on my dad's old acoustic he got in the 60s with its big thicc ass neck. The Epiphone doesn't have a fat neck particularly, but it's certainly not anywhere near as thin as the ibanez and Jackson and schechter kind of guitars. It's like a modern thick neck. Which is probably the equivalent of what a "thin" neck was in the 50s and 60s. But either way, it just works. It works so well. I haven't ever owned a guitar as playable to me as this one.
      It has the best fret access of _ANY_ guitar I've ever played. I was really really shocked by that. I always thought they'd be very clunky guitars because they come from 1961. But no. They have more fret access than any strat or super strat I've ever played, certainly much much more than any les Paul. It's astonishing. You get up to like the 16th/17th fret and it still feels like you're at the 1st fret, there's no added bulk or anything, it's just as easy to play up there as down in the lower frets. It's gonna change the way I play guitar completely. Normally I rarely play above the 12th fret that much because it was just always a chore with the guitars I had already. But now I'll be able to play much much higher. It sounds so fantastic playing up there. No wonder Les Paul himself liked this feature of the SG, even though he disliked the SG overall (or really he just hated the first ones because they had very weak necks that could be bent backwards too easily and he preferred more solid guitars, and by 1963 Gibson had already solved the weak neck problem, but he always praised how good the fret access was, it was like nothing else that had ever existed before in the world of guitars, when it came out in 1961)
      And I chose it also because it's _WAAAAY_ more versatile than all the metal guitars there at this shop. Because it has coil splitting. I forgot that the Muse line had that feature until we got there. It means you get like, what, 8 or 9 different tones in one guitar? Lemme work it out. Cos you got the 2 humbuckers separate, and the 2 humbuckers together in the middle position. That's 3. Then you have both humbuckers coil split. So that's 3 more tones. And you have neck humbucker plus single coil bridge together, and vice versa bridge humbucker plus single coil neck together, so that's 2 more. So 8 in total so far.
      But it's also got another pullable knob on it, a third one, that's on the bridge tone knob I think, I can't remember which one, it doesn't really matter. But it makes it so the pickups go out of phase or something. I dunno. It just makes it sound super super twangy like a tele or strat. With the 2 humbuckers both coil split into single coils it already sounds like a tele. But then when you add this phase shift feature too, it gets even more like that. It only seems to do anything when the pickups aren't coil split, when they're coil split it makes no difference. But yeah so it has 3 extra tones, bridge middle and neck, because of this out-of-phase thing it does. So that's 11 tones in total so far.
      And it has a treble bleed circuit, or whatever it's called. So when you reduce the volume, the tone doesn't get muddy at all. It stays sharp. So that adds even more tones.
      And of course like on every SG and LP, you can make even more tones by doing things like go in the middle possition but have one pickup at full volume and the other at say 2 or 3, so you can get say a tone that's mainly the bridge pickup but with a little bit of neck to make it sound warmer and fatter. Or you could have the middle position with one pick up at max tone level and the other at min tone level for even more unique sounds
      But yeah even just playing it normally with no coil splitting or any other funny business, it's just a joy to play and it sounds gorgeous. I don't think I'll ever replace the pickups in it. They're already great.

      SuitAndTy89 R if you're still thinking of it, go for it. You can't go wrong with any iteration of the G400. They end up being the cheapest "high end" Epiphone and Gibson, too, for that matter. All a matter of personal taste and most people's tastes tend to stray from SGs these days it would seem.

      @@iwannaleavenow1456 I own a Les Paul Traditional, A Fender Strat, American Standard, and a Mod Shop Telecaster along with my SG-400 from Epiphone. The SG is one well built guitar. It is sturdy and solid. I can go out and hit batting practice with this mother and then go play music. The PUPs can get a bit muddy some times, but all in all, I play it in my rotation, the same amount as my other guitars. I love it. I'lllove it more when I get my Seymore Duncan Antiquity PUPs for it.

      @Dagger_323 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hardluck 1995 don't get me wrong. I love the SG. I've got an SG and a Les Paul both. You're right the SG is the perfect guitar for slide. I find myself playing my SG sometimes instead just because of its ergonomics. But I always end up going back to my Les Paul mainly because of its tone. It sustains longer and has a more rounded tone that works better for the blues-rock that I play. The SG may cut slightly more in a mix but just doesn't quite have the fullness of my Les Paul. Either way they're both incredible guitars, and I agree with what Marty said about the SG being a much better value for the money.

I was a band geek in school so that has helped me along the way. I bought a Gibson SG back in October and I love it. I tried the Les Paul but felt that it was too heavy. I do agree that it has better warmth and sustain but I don't think there is a huge difference between the two. Still learning how to play (with help from you at times...lol) but I've had a few L.P.'s and always seem to end up getting rid of them due to the darkish, muddy tone the have when you get down on some Sabbath, C.O.C., etc. But I've recently acquired a very nice SG and imo, it's the perfect guitar to fill the gap between a strat style "twang" and a L.P. style grunge. It'll go down low if you want and still sound great but will get nice and bright if you want it to. The only thing I think I'll do is put a push/pull on the neck to coil tap so I can get that nice, creamy strat style single coil sound when I need it. Thanks again Marty for all the great lessons and comparison vids. \m/

    But, from personal experience (bought both yesterday off Craigslist) the Les Paul has very rich tone, but the neck is huge, it feels like I'm playing an acoustic with electric strings and it's such a heavy, beautiful block of wood. The SG is what the devil would chose. (He told me so).
