This is an all time classic. Literally will never leave my brain, up there with the Mario overworld theme, the most memorable Zelda themes, Pokémon themes, and Green Hill Zone.
Fun fact about the percussion in this soundtrack: there is very little of it, but if you're riding on Yoshi, an extra percussion track gets added to every level theme in the game. Because Super Mario World uses a motif throughout its soundtrack and uses the same melody in pretty much every song, the percussive track matches up well with all of them. However interestingly Yoshi isn't allowed in the Castle levels due to technical limitations, so you never get to hear it with the Castle theme in the original game.

What's really cool about this ost is how Kondo uses the same melody for almost every song and still makes the songs different from each other.

Even cooler is how Kondo continued this with both Super Mario Maker games, where Kondo served as sound director and main composer. The new Desert, Forest, Snow, and Airship themes he wrote all still use the same Super Mario World motif.

I realized that. Every level theme is a remix of the overworld theme. But cleverly hidden. Even the course clear themes, too.

9 times out of 10, when you hear a Mario castle theme, it's going to be the dark, sinister kind. (Unless it's Peach's castle, and even that isn't guarenteed.) The basic formula for most of the "classic-style" games is you go through a bunch of levels and then an enemy castle at the end of each world, with harder challenges and (usually) a boss. The "96 levels" thing is a BIT of deceptive marketing, by the way. In actuality, there are 96 "exits", as one of the biggest aspects of this game is that you're traveling through a largely non-linear world where you can find secret exits to open alternate paths, allowing you to take wildy different routes through the game. In fact, you can find a series of secret exits right near the start that will take you straight to Bowser, skipping a good 90% of the game if you know where to look.
This may have been the darkest Mario theme you've heard so far, but definitely not the darkest you'll ever hear, based on what I'm seeing on your request list. :P

Super Mario single-handedly saved the video game industry. There's plenty of articles that could explain it better than I could, but more or less, the video game market crashed in the early 80s due to oversaturation. Then Nintendo comes along and the NES makes people fall in love with video games all over again, and a big part of that was because Super Mario was bundled with the console, so everyone had it, everyone played it, and "everyone" loved it.

One of the main reasons for Nintendo was its marketing. It had more commercial marketing than any other console, Nintendo took a massive risk.
And the best part of it? The name. It was not a console, not even a game machine... it was an Entertainment system. They separated themselves from the sinking market via branding. This was a system to complete your entertainment/living room for guests and family.

So the "96 levels" blurb on the box is actually a slight mistake; there are only 72 levels in the game, but there are 96 EXITS to find that count towards 100% completion

I'm guessing that when you're thinking of VGM with a "Castle theme", you're expecting something more regal sounding. There actually is an iconic Mario song that probably fits the vibe you're looking for, and that's Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64. When I think of a Mario song with a "regal castle vibe" it's that one.

    • @NoahLoydOG
      @NoahLoydOG 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I would also offer the similar, alternate versions of that theme, as heard in Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Actually, that, Bowser's Castle and the late game version of Peach's Castle theme are all good choices.
Although my favorite is easily the castle level theme from Yoshi's Island.

My favourite game of all time and by extension one of my favourite video game soundtracks of all time. This song plays whenever you enter the end of world castles and is always the same. Koji Kondo wrote one melody for this game but each stage song is a rearrangement of the same melody, the overworld theme, the athletic theme, bonus rooms, castles and ghost houses. It's so well done.
In terms of actual levels, there are 72 unique levels, 24 of them have alternate exits making for a total of 96 possible exits in the game.
Also, if you're looking to play a classic 2D Mario game, I would recommend either this (Super Mario World) or Super Mario Bros 3. Each have their own charm and are both absolutely fantastic games.

Mario percussion in this game is actually....bongos!?
Whenever you ride yoshi a bongo beat kicks on to accompany the song.
But in this game, mario "parks" yoshi outside indoor levels. Castles and boo houses dont contain the bongo track (but they do exist technically you cant hear them under normal circumstances)
There are technically 76 levels, means 20 levels have alternate win-cons.
Mario does feel like right place right time. Atari flunked out and people tried mario on the NES and LOVED IT. Mario is the gold standard for platformers and its so high because theyre really refined a lot.
We should all be glad mario doesnt do metroidvanias because it currently dominates the 3d collectathon space and the 2d level based space. Theyre just good games every time.

One thing I've found fascinating about this song for the longest time is, like... it has a really weird relationship with the "repetitive looping" that classic VGM is so known for. The entire first half of the song is basically an _extended intro_ to the section that comes after, and no matter how many times you listen to that "latter" half of the song loop, it never goes back to the actual beginning.
I find it interesting because when you listen to, like, an extension of the song for background listening, it gets old quickly because the actual loop is so short, but when you listen to it _ingame,_ where every level has a time limit and is usually fairly short, you hear the song starting from the beginning a lot more often, and the latter looping section usually only gets the chance to play if you actually make it far into the level, almost like it times itself to kick in when you "lock in" and focus

  • @devonm042690
    @devonm042690 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

When the theme loops in-game, it only does so starting from 2:52. Not sure if you caught it, but at 3:45 it looped back to that point. So slightly more than half of the theme is just a prelude, and that prelude is more energetic than the main theme. Though it does make sense in context. In-game, when the theme starts Mario is walking up to the castle he's about to try to destroy from the inside, and the enemy forces just open the front gate for him. He's being _invited_ by the enemy to try to stop the detachment of Bowser's forces that are harassing the local area from this outpost, or on the final level he's being invited by Bowser himself to try to force him out and off of the island he's taken over. So it's really intense at the start, but if you survive long enough for the theme to loop at least once, it's like Mario's just fallen into a rhythm of doing what he always does. It's still tense because no matter how remote a detachment he's facing, if this theme is playing he's in the heart of enemy territory, but things still manage to settle into a rhythm.
I'm making it sound a lot more epic than it is. This _is_ a Super Nintendo 2D Side-scrolling Mario Platformer at the end of the day. The game does show Mario destroying each castle after beating the local enemy commander, but they're all wacky. Well I mean, the first one isn't what I'd call wacky, but he still has explosives set up ahead of time to run out to the detonator for after beating the commander. It's not even the first time he does that, but it is the only time it's played straight. I think it's safe to say his methods become wackier as he goes (in-game the castles are numbered 1-7 on the world map). The fourth one is the second one he has explosives set up on, but it just blasts off like a rocket and smashes into a hill sticking out of the water off in the distance, leaving a scar that remains to be seen on the World Map for the rest of the game (hills in Mario have eyes; literal blinking eyes, and the hill the fourth castle smashes into has a stereotypical white 'x' of crossed bandages at the place of impact afterward.) The last castle headed by a local commander is right in front of Bowser's Castle, and Mario just picks it up and kicks it away.

Super Mario World is an absolute classic. This is my favourite Mario game; the aesthetic, the style and sound design are uniquely charming and the game completely owns it. There's a whimsy, a silliness to it that makes it incredibly memorable and timeless. You go through worlds like Donut Plains and Vanilla Dome, Cheese Bridge and Cookie Dome. It's brilliant.
My favourite thing about Super Mario World is the secrets. This game has TONS of secrets, in many of the levels and on the world map itself. You have to pay attention and figure out how to get to out of the way parts of a level and it's so satisfying. That number of 96 levels is every level in the game, including all the secret levels, so on a first playthrough you're probably unlikely to see more than about 70.
I think for the original Super Mario Bros, it was probably right place at the right time. What I don't understand is Super Mario 64 catapulting Nintendo and Mario into astronomical levels of respect for their game design, when I consider it extremely outdated and janky. Even at the time, I don't know how anyone played that and was like "yeah this is the good shit"

One thing I always loved about Super Mario World's OST is its simplicity. Koji Kondo took the same leitmotif of the main overworld theme and just threw it in as many of the stage themes as he could. In this case, it's in the minor key to make it sound darker, and it definitely works.

  • @superplushroompower-up

Super Mario World's soundtrack is composed almost entirely of remixes of one theme. Even the castle theme you just listen to is a remix of the same theme as all of the other level themes in the game.

Considering that you have a Switch, if you have NSO for it you get access to a collection of SNES games and Super Mario World is among those. Highly recommend messing around with the game if you have access to it since its fun to just pick up and play.
Super Mario World's ost is really interesting because much like Goldeneye's OST, there is a main leit motif used in pretty much all of the main stage tracks of this game. As a kid playing through this game back in the day I never noticed it until I became more musically inclined in my later years and it still amazes me exactly how many times Koji Kondo came at the motif and managed to deliver something different enough each time that it wasn't immediately noticeable. The Castle theme in this game is probably the busiest and most complex track on the OST (please correct me if I'm wrong on this anybody). There's only 1 other track on this ost that is arguably equally as dark and that's the Ghost House. Otherwise most of the other tracks in the game are earworms...Overworld, Underworld, Underwater, Athletic....all of them ear worms. You'll hear them and immediately likely start humming...such is the genius of Kondo.

to answer your question about why mario got so popular. the answer is just the gameplay. in an era where most platformers felt incredibly stiff and had barebones level design, mario gave you really fine-tuned controls and well-considered levels. no matter whether it was the NES, SNES, N64, etc., mario was always the smoothest platforming experience. i think he's also just a highly marketable character, along with yoshi.

Super Mario World still has a very active fangame and ROM hack community to this day, and many, many, many music tracks (video game in origin or otherwise) have been reproduced with its soundfonts. Super Mario World Central is the main hub where they're all available for download and play on SNES emulators, and it's been going strong for nearly 20 years.

2:10-2:18 is a variation of Super Mario World's leitmotif; a note string that exists in some form in every (or almost every, though I'd be surprised if one existed without it) stage theme from Super Mario World. 3:07-3:14 is another variation of it.

I love how this theme actually manages to sound daunting and intimidating. The castle themes in previous games did ha e a dark or heavy feel, but the shortness and simplicity of the looping track sort of unraveled a bit of the tension. In every castle in Super Mario World it felt like a perilous journey to reach the final doors, thanks in no small part to the ominous theme playing throughout.

Mario is iconic is because we grew up with him from the 80s. It was the first character that had a story from the very first game, and the game was magical. Nintendo kept Mario alive because it was always a staple of Nintendo.

If you want to experience 'pseudo-percussion' in retro music, find any listing of a track from this game that has both the version with and without Yoshi. For this game, a channel was dedicated to a beat that only comes in when riding Yoshi. It comes in and goes out seamlessly and dynamically. It doesn't exist for the castle of ghost house themes though, because Mario makes Yoshi wait outside in those levels. It's never explained in-game, but someone hacked Yoshi into a castle level and it didn't go well. I'm not sure if there were elements of the castle levels that the devs couldn't figure out how to get to mesh with Yoshi, or if they didn't bother because Yoshi breaks the Reznor battle.

A fun fact since you brought up pokemon: The final boss theme of gen 1, Champion Blue, has been remixed more than I believe any other battle theme in the franchise. The first was obviously for the remakes, Fire Red and Leaf Green, but after that it became a tradition to make a new version of the song almost every generation specifically for the highest levels of competitive pvp. My personal favorite is the Black and White version, just for the record.

Super Mario Bros 1, together with the NES was released during the notorious video game market crash of the 80's and singlehandedly saved the video game industry. The game came with every NES sold so everyone who owned it played Super Mario, which heavily contribute to its popularity and its status as a mascot for Nintendo. It was also the game that pioneered side scrolling, and together with the new controller with the very first D-pad set a new standard for the industry. And then of course there is marketing. But TLDR, we wouldn't be playing video games today and listen to their music without Nintendo and Super Mario.

While many Mario games host their own unique castle themes, all of them great to listen to, I don't know if there's any more iconic than the one from this game. It is rather surprising you hadn't gotten any requests for "Athletic Theme" or "Staff Roll", but I guess they've sort of reached a meme status for one reason or another and people have different priorities for what to request
I don't know if it really counts as a "castle" theme, but Super Mario 64 has a song called "Koopa's Road", which plays when playing the Bowser levels of Princess Peach's Castle. (Though you get there through portals, so it's hard to say it's actually a part of the castle...) It's one of Bowser's most iconic themes, I think. Though I think that can be said about many songs from SMB3, SMW, and SM64. The trilogy of Mario's musical history.
They all have relatively short soundtracks given their limitations. Maybe you might be able to get through them some day. At least the popular ones from each game. It'd give you a bunch of details about Mario, and probably prepare you for if you decide to play one of them. Those three games are generally the ones old school mario fans like the best, for very different reasons.
Your comment about Mario's main theme kind of sounding boring to you makes me think... how would you react to the other themes from the original game? I think a theoretical reaction to the underground theme would be kind of amusing.
All of that aside, one of my favorite Mario osts would have to be the Super Mario Galaxy ost. Just about every song from both of the games are so incredibly good. But unlike the musical trilogy, the SMG games have like 200 songs in them, they're incredibly massive. Probably the most music that Mario has gotten, ever. I wouldn't even know where to begin with that game (aside from my bias with Buoy Base Galaxy)
I wanted to mention Galaxy because something you said in this video reminded me of Toy Time Galaxy. I don't suspect you'll be hearing it for a long time, so it'll likely lose it's relevance, especially since (technically) Super Mario Galaxy isn't available for Switch. But I thought I'd at least mention it. It's relevant within the context of this video, anyway.

People in the comments have already touched upon some aspects for why Mario is seen nowadays as the face of video games, mostly through the lens of how Nintendo via Super Mario Bros and the NES resurrected the North American video game industry that Atari destroyed. But even outside of that context Super Mario Bros is still one of the most important video games of all time because it signifies a paradigm shift for where video games are best experienced by providing a home console video game that was as good if not better than the arcade games of the era.
Prior to Super Mario Bros, home console games were a blatantly inferior product to what developers were making for the arcades, and at best home consoles were aiming to provide the best conversion of arcade games. The Famicom (Japanese equivalent of the NES) was designed with the express purpose of "playing a perfect game of Donkey Kong (the 1981 Arcade game)", which it mostly achieved even though they had to cut one level from that game. Super Mario Bros took the nascent platformer genre (at the time best represented by 1984's Pac-Land) and not only perfected the mechanics and fun to the best feeling game at the time, but also provided a robust gameplay experience on a home console that had previously not been seen. With its 32 unique* levels and robust level design, Super Mario Bros proved that developers could make games on par with arcade games without the massive costs associated with developing arcade games. As such it opened the doors for more development teams to break into the game industry by making development more accessible, and this was most felt in the Japanese and American markets where the Famicom and NES were booming.
Tl;dr - Mario is important cause on release Super Mario Bros was the best feeling and most robust console gaming experience you could have, and it proved that console gaming could be as robust as arcade gaming and spurred further development of console games over arcade games

I'd love to see a reaction to the evolution of Chocobo themes from the Final Fantasy series.
Mario is essentially Mr Video Game, but he wasn't originally planned to exist! Nintendo was trying to make a Popeye platformer where you chase Bluto up a partially constructed building, but couldn't get the rights to the characters. So Bluto was replaced with a giant ape who we all know today as Donkey Kong (well today that one is Kranky Kong but that's beside the point) and for our hero they wanted bold colors, hence the blue and red color scheme, with a mustache so they wouldnt have to draw a face. Originally he was known as Jumpman, but it was noted that their art had a resemblance to the landlord of the Nintendo of America building, Mario Segale (who hated being associated with the character).
Video games as an industry fell on tough times in the early '80s due to home console bloat and a lot of very cheap and poorly made games flooding the market. You've likely heard of games being buried in a landfill in New Mexico and that would be why. Otherwise they were just taking up space in warehouses. But with the Nintendo Famicom ("Family Computer") and its subsequent release overseas as the Nintendo Entertainment System, people started playing games again. And a large part of that was thanks to Super Mario Bros.
It wasn't Mario's first outing without Donkey Kong. A single screen game known only as Mario Bros (which was the first appearance of Luigi as the eternal second player) played in arcades a bit beforehand. But with an expansive eight worlds to zoom around in, clever puzzles, designs inspired by everything from Japanese folklore to Alice In Wonderland, and enough Video Game Bullshit to get schoolkids swapping tips on the playground, the video game industry was back on its feet, bolstered by a portly plumber.

To answer your question at the end, I think you have to go back to 1985 with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was just after the Atari Video Game crash; the industry had completely been given up with. However, Nintendo exploded off the shelves, and Super Mario Bros was one of the release titles for the system (and it should be noted that it is still fun today). You could say that Mario saved Video Games and why we play them today.
That's my understanding, so I hope that answers your question.
P.S. I think Mario is also so popular today is because there are so many Mario games that appeal to so many people; they are very fun games to play.

just chiming in here, as Super Mario World is my #1 favorite game of all time. But this game is actually as big as it seems, 96 levels total, but branching paths, secret exits, and some actually REALLY difficult platforming to be done (for the time). Might not match some of the difficulty of things like Super Meat Boy, Celeste or the fan hacks for SMW itself, but it's in a sweet spot of being challenging enough to still be relevant, and not too easy to just be able to blow past it. I also think the soundtrack is a 10/10 overall, not sure if you got more requests for it incoming, but the rest of the soundtrack is no slouch.

Personally I think it would have liked for you to listen to the entire collection of Castle Level themes from across the Mario Series. None of them are the same (except for New Super Mario Bros Wii/2/U), but it's an interesting Microcosm of the musical history of the Mario series, plus each would be equally fitting as a theme for storming an enemy castle if such a theme has a place in your Castle Theme video.

I know castles are the theme? But given circumstances I think it'd only be fair to include a boss theme in relation to the game you are commenting on. Like for example, with this going into super mario world's boss theme would be fitting, and if you do Yoshi's Island's castle definitely do both midboss and world boss as the castle themes in both SMW and YI act as like the warm up for a major confrontation.

If you want to experience some more Mario, along with all the other classic Nintendo franchises, I highly recommend grabbing a Switch Online subscription. 20 bucks gets you a year of online play alongside apps with all the classics from the NES, SNES and Game Boy / Game Boy Color. After downloading the apps, it's easy enough to just pop in, check out a game, pop out and pop into another one. Great way of familiarizing yourself with Nintendo history and hearing some of the tunes; you'll get your Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Donkey Kong and smaller hits like Punch-Out, F-Zero, Earthbound, etc.
If you feel like splurging a bit, there's also the Expansion Pack tier for $50 a year. It includes everything from the $20 tier and adds in N64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Genesis games (plus some bonus DLC for certain games). While the selection of games was kinda disappointing at first, over the years they added more to the point of making it worth it at either tier.

There's probably not any Super Mario World requests because people don't think of that as music that you have to listen to. People think of that as music you have listened to. It's full of iconic tracks, but "everyone" has listened to the athletic theme, so why request it when you could instead listen to steam gardens or mario 64's credits theme? Hope this video nets you some more Super Mario World requests, cause if you really haven't heard the athletic theme, it's time that someone lets you.
