I just watched this film for the first time and it truly affected me. I'm still deciding if its possible in my mind but I think it could be my favourite movie. I felt such anxiety in the last half of the film, my god. The ending had me teary and in awe. This is the kind of work that invigorates the soul.

Also recommend ”The Hidden Blade” and "Love and Honor" by the same director.

I agree. Favorite movie of all time. Deeply moving and compelling. The ending with Ito (by then an elderly woman) visiting the grave is a bitter sweet tear jerker.

First of all absolutely phenomenal review. You guys are absolutely right about the feel of this film being a lot like Unforgiven, and more like a Ozu film than a Kurosawa film. I never thought of those distinctions before and it makes me respect the film even more than I had before. I first saw this film in a little foreign and independent theater, that I would walk past after work on my way to the bus line everyday. I remember being one of maybe a dozen or so people in the theater ( this was when it came out by the way) and everyone was just taking it all in. Andy is right it is so peaceful even though there is some very bloody violence in it. I am so glad you showed the fishing scenes, they have stuck in my head for almost 20 years now and they fill me joy and sadness. I have to say that I love Hiroyuki Sanada he is such an absolutely fantastic actor, and I was so glad to see him in the second and third season of Westworld but I do not think he gets the respect he deserves. I cannot wait until next week, I know a lot of people think it is one of their all-time best films, and I have seen it before but lets see if my opinion has changed by next week. Great job as always and take care and be safe.

Thanks for the suggestion, Damien. This was a fantastic watch and one that I will definitely be revisiting in the future! It's films like this that make me wonder why the samurai genre has fallen out of favour in the west - Andy H

The ending of this film is so heartbreaking. And yet, just like his daughter at the end, I am so proud of Seibei.

I have the DVD of this film and watch it regularly. It is a favourite and possibly my all time favourite film. I have also just ordered "The Hidden Blade" and can't wait to watch that to see whether it matches up to "The Twilight Samurai". If anyone knows where "Love and Honor" DVD can be purchased please let me know. I would love to have the trilogy.

The key part of this film is when Yogo attacks Seibei in the house. Think about it. Yogo is a samurai who is only alive because he and his lord broke all the rules of the samurai code - in order to take care of his wife and daughter Yogo chose to live when his previous lord died. The consequences of that decision were that he was outcast and his wife and daughter - the very loved ones he broke the rules for - died. The rules kill Yogo's wife and daughter. And Yogo reminds us harshly of those rules by munching on his daughter's ashes while talking to Seibei in the house. he is - literally - "eating bitterness".
His new lord (the one who recently died) took him in despite the code they live by. Yogo again wants to live and breaks the rules and Seibei is sent to deal with him but instead they both break the rules when Seibei agrees to let him go. Then Yogo gets insulted by the wooden Katana - Yogo cant quite let go of the rules - and attacks Seibei. And that kills Yogo - he's stuck back in the prison of the old rules. As is Seibei in the end. For both men, even though they are oppressed by the rules of their society those rules are part of who they are and always will be. A message thats unversal.
This is absolutely my favourite film. Not only is it beautifully done but it has such a powerful message.

One of the best movies ever made as far as I am concerned. I am addicted to this story. So beautiful. And the way Yamada concentrates on the tiny details of life really draws the viewer in. In many respects THAT aspect of this film reminds me of the latest remake of Shogun (based on James Clavel's novel and incidentally also starring Sanada san. ) That series also focuses on authenticity as shown by the tiny details of life in Japan - although in that case it focuses on the senior leadership of Japan and is set at the beginning of the Tokugawa era (the real life Toranaga) where as Twilight Samurai focuses on life at the bottom end of the Samurai totem pole at the end of the same era. Beautiful movie as I say.
