"Communion and the Oracle" is a piece full of memorable beautiful melodies assembled with intricate counterpoint lines. I also consider "Rediscovery Part 1" as the most sublime instrumental piece ever written within the genre. The colossal suite "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" is in my opinion the greatest progressive metal epic track along with Shadow Gallery's "Ghostship". Greetings.

I'm not a big Fan of their latest heaviest albums, I like them but not as much as their early stuff.

In the pub (before the lock-down) we played Desert Island Disc. The idea was that you were sent to a desert island for 1 year and you were allowed just 1 c.d in which you recorded your favourite tunes. The run time is no more than 80 mins. Just wondered if this was something you and your subscribers would be interested in?
Such an out of this world band. MAYBE these are my top 10 songs (not sure, but I definitely go with the long epics): 10. The accolade Part 2 9. The accolade 8. Communion and the oracle 7. Rediscovery Part 2 6. A winter‘s dream (1&2) 5. Egypt 4. The edge of forever 3. The divine wings of tragedy 2. Through the looking glass 1. The odyssey (PERFECTION!!!) But all of their epic songs are amazing. Ask me another day and I‘ll put Awakenings, Paradise lost, When all is lost, Candlelight Fantasia, Lady of the snow, Church of the machine, To hell and back, etc. on the list... But then there are the shorter tracks as Of sins and shadows, Out of the ashes, The damnation game, Inferno, Set the world on fire, King of terrors, A fool‘s paradise, Pharaoh... Could go on forever... The only albums that are "only" good in my opinion are the debut and Iconoclast. I think they were much better with their less heavy and more epic style on the first six albums though Paradise lost and Underworld are also fantastic. Symphony X was my favorite band up until and including The odyssey. Now they‘re only one of my favorite bands. ;-)

It’s funny...when I reach for a Symphony X album, it’s usually “V: The New Mythology Suite.” Definitely my favorite. But for me, the album that contains the most standout, memorable, terrific songs is “Iconoclast.” The songs “The End of Innocence,” “Children of a Faceless God,” and “When All is Lost” would be on my Top 10 for sure. At any rate, loved the discussion and hearing your lists!

I also have to say that the older albums don't really have many songs that stand out but I think they generally work better as a whole than some of the newer ones. The New Mythology Suite as a great example, that would be my number two album from the band.

K. Symphony X is one of my absolute favourite bands, so I totally understand how a top 10 list could be practically impossible. I also understand that taste does matter and some subjectivity comes into play when it comes to judging music, BUT I felt compelled to say this: I really think a top 10 list without either Rediscovery or When All is Lost is incomplete... There's NO WAY I'm putting The End of Innocence or Out of the Ashes before those two!
The versions of Through The Looking Glass and Divine Wings of Tragedy on the Live On The Edge Of Forever live album are stellar. As much as I love the originals I always gravitate to the live versions

Hey Pete, my thoughts on Russell Allen. He’s got an incredible voice. And now changed his style to a growling type of vocals with a tint of Dio, which I agree he sounds like with that style. I’d rather he be his own style which was and is incredible. Why would you want to sound like someone else, when your incredible with your own? Dante

The moment that gentleman on the right said 'Serpent's Kiss' it was like, holy crap here we go! I mean they do got a lot of classics like Sea Of Lies, Smoke And Mirrors, A Fool's Paradise, Inferno etc. but that particular song is one banger of a tune! Nice list by both of you Sir! Hey Pete, tons of love from Greece. Keep it up. Talking about prog from that era, your opinion on Sieges Even from Germany would be much appreciated. Their lp, A sense of change? IMO top 5 90s prog album easily. (Top 5 90s album period for me)
Surprised Out of The Ashes made the top 10 on Jack's list. While not a bad song, great by any bands stretch, it's just overshadowed by alot of better songs on the same album. Not even top 5 of the album, IMO. But to each their own.
I think you pretty much covered my favorites, in both the top 10's and the honorable mentions. Except, no one mentioned Egypt. I think it's from the New Mythology album. Love that bass part in the middle. Now if you like Russell Allen, check out Star One. The brainchild of Arjen Anthony Lucassen, I'm pretty sure everyone else in that band actually plays for someone else. But for singers you have Russell Allen, Damien Wilson from Threshold - another band you should check out, Robert Soderboek - I think that's how you spell it, could be wrong, Lucassen himself plays guitar and sings a little bit, sisters Floor and Irene Jansen - Floor is from Within Temptation. Then on keyboards you have Jos Vanderbrook - again, spelling? - also from Within Temptation, Peter Vink on bass, and I can't remember the drummer's name. I also saw the tour with Symphony X and Iced Earth, and generally I think Symphony X is the better band of the two, but on that night, Iced Earth owned it as there was something about Symphony X's sound. You know the situation, you see fingers moving on guitar and keyboards, but you can't really hear it and all you hear is drums and bass, as if they are too loud and drowning themselves out. And if you like Iced Earth and that sort of power, you should check out Overkill, if you haven't already. They don't sound like them, but they you give that feel of umph! Also you mentioned HammerFall. I have a friend, although I haven't seen him for years, that I used to go club-hopping with in the early to mid 80's named Bill Tsamis. It's interesting that on his birth certificate, his name is Billy Tsamis, no middle name, but he now goes by William J. Tsamis, even though William is not his name. Anyway he was the founder and guitarist of Warlord, who sadly never made it. But anyway HammerFall covered his Child of the Damned, which he wrote in his teens, and he heard it, and contacted them to tell them he liked it. They became friends and eventually they invited him to play on a track on one of his albums. Now I knew this but didn't know what song he played on. So one day back in the Napster days, I was downloading HammerFall songs and I came across one called, I think it was At the End of the Rainbow. As I listened to the solos I thought, that's Bill. So I contacted him about it - by this point he had moved to Florida from California, where we did out hanging out - and he said I was right, that was the song and he asked me how I knew. I told him I just know what you sound like, and that was the sound. I was also really good friends with Warlord's drummer, Mark Zonder. I think he went on to become known in certain circles. I remember telling a guy I met once that I knew the drummer from Fates Warning and was like in awe, "You know Mark Zonder?!" he said. I not only knew Mark from Warlord, but he had at one point bought and lived in a house on my street. Anyway he's gone on to play with a lot of different acts: Fates Warning, Chroma Key, Slavior, Ten, At War With Self, and I'm not sure how many others. Oh, and for long Epics, I really like a lot of Yes's. Of course Close to the Edge, but I also really like Gates of Delirium, Ritual, and there's one of which I can't think of the title. When it comes to me I'll update this post. I got it: Awaken.

The moment that gentleman on the right said 'Serpent's Kiss' it was like, holy crap here we go! I mean they do got a lot of classics like Sea Of Lies, Smoke And Mirrors, A Fool's Paradise, Inferno etc. but that particular song is one banger of a tune! Nice list by both of you Sir! Symphony X related videos are so less in number.
Hey Pete, tons of love from Greece. Keep it up. Talking about prog from that era, your opinion on Sieges Even from Germany would be much appreciated. Their lp, A sense of change? IMO top 5 90s prog album easily. (Top 5 90s album period for me)
Superb band. Need more CDs with them, only have Iconclast, V, Underworld and Paradise Lost. Little bit hard to find thier CDs.

Surprised Out of The Ashes made the top 10 on Jack's list. While not a bad song, great by any bands stretch, it's just overshadowed by alot of better songs on the same album. Not even top 5 of the album, IMO. But to each their own.
Don't forget Thomas Miller!!!.... He's a member of the Sym X fam as well..
I did mention his bass run at the beginning of "Sea of Lies". Incredible!!

I think you pretty much covered my favorites, in both the top 10's and the honorable mentions. Except, no one mentioned Egypt. I think it's from the New Mythology album. Love that bass part in the middle.
Now if you like Russell Allen, check out Star One. The brainchild of Arjen Anthony Lucassen, I'm pretty sure everyone else in that band actually plays for someone else. But for singers you have Russell Allen, Damien Wilson from Threshold - another band you should check out, Robert Soderboek - I think that's how you spell it, could be wrong, Lucassen himself plays guitar and sings a little bit, sisters Floor and Irene Jansen - Floor is from Within Temptation. Then on keyboards you have Jos Vanderbrook - again, spelling? - also from Within Temptation, Peter Vink on bass, and I can't remember the drummer's name.
I also saw the tour with Symphony X and Iced Earth, and generally I think Symphony X is the better band of the two, but on that night, Iced Earth owned it as there was something about Symphony X's sound. You know the situation, you see fingers moving on guitar and keyboards, but you can't really hear it and all you hear is drums and bass, as if they are too loud and drowning themselves out.
And if you like Iced Earth and that sort of power, you should check out Overkill, if you haven't already. They don't sound like them, but they you give that feel of umph!
Also you mentioned HammerFall. I have a friend, although I haven't seen him for years, that I used to go club-hopping with in the early to mid 80's named Bill Tsamis. It's interesting that on his birth certificate, his name is Billy Tsamis, no middle name, but he now goes by William J. Tsamis, even though William is not his name. Anyway he was the founder and guitarist of Warlord, who sadly never made it. But anyway HammerFall covered his Child of the Damned, which he wrote in his teens, and he heard it, and contacted them to tell them he liked it. They became friends and eventually they invited him to play on a track on one of his albums. Now I knew this but didn't know what song he played on. So one day back in the Napster days, I was downloading HammerFall songs and I came across one called, I think it was At the End of the Rainbow. As I listened to the solos I thought, that's Bill. So I contacted him about it - by this point he had moved to Florida from California, where we did out hanging out - and he said I was right, that was the song and he asked me how I knew. I told him I just know what you sound like, and that was the sound.
I was also really good friends with Warlord's drummer, Mark Zonder. I think he went on to become known in certain circles. I remember telling a guy I met once that I knew the drummer from Fates Warning and was like in awe, "You know Mark Zonder?!" he said. I not only knew Mark from Warlord, but he had at one point bought and lived in a house on my street. Anyway he's gone on to play with a lot of different acts: Fates Warning, Chroma Key, Slavior, Ten, At War With Self, and I'm not sure how many others.
Oh, and for long Epics, I really like a lot of Yes's. Of course Close to the Edge, but I also really like Gates of Delirium, Ritual, and there's one of which I can't think of the title. When it comes to me I'll update this post.
