  • I used water and compressed air to stress test some 2L pop bottles to failure. I destroy 25 other pop bottles using only compressed air here: • This Happened .... Whe...
    Unbelievable how big they can get. They can be amazingly strong and stretch pretty far under pressure.
    HOW MUCH PRESSURE CAN A BOTTLE TAKE? .... • This Happened .... Whe...

      You have to make a spear of some type to safely pop the bottles. One time while working at Pepsi we had some water bottles come out of the filler overcharged with liquid nitrogen. They were swelling up so big they jammed the conveyor and we had to make a spear to pop them. It sounded like a gun going off.

      That is why hydrostatic testing is safer, and used to certify tanks. Air compresses, and stores energy, water does not.

    That Crush bottle is way too impressive! I remember a long time ago my father told me how he rode a bicycle downhill and a bottle just like that one fell out of his bag. Considering the speed of at least 20 mph, that bottle must've had hit the asphalt pretty hard. My dad was surprised it sustained the impact...
    Now it's no wonder to me why it sustained the impact. If he watched this, my dad would've been surprised too, had he not died of cancer four years ago...

    This is why it is MUCH better to use these pressure vessels that PVC pipe that will explode. The first one did not explode it split. The difference is no flying shrapnel and very little possibility of bodily damage. PVC shatters catastrophically when it goes and can be seriously dangerous.

    The smaller water bottles make great exploding targets, you can put a little flour in em for the visual effect. Most of the time the cap is reusable. I use a bicycle pump to inflate them because it doesn't require a lot of air. You don't have to wonder if you hit it !

    Great video! About 10 years ago a guy posted a video on making 2L bottle rockets w/ PVC pipe and an ingenious release mechanism. I made one that worked so good I never could see how high it went. I would pump it up to only around 80 psi for fear much more it would explode and since there were kids around that was a no go, but now I may dig it out and try it w/ higher psi, and maybe make a parachute arrangement for it. Thanks

      Yes I'm doing the same thing, I wanted to know what was a safe working pressure for a bottle rocket. I am working on the idea if they fail at 150Psi then 100Psi is safe. But I think I will have to get a longer air line, so we can stand much further away. I already had milk bottle failed at only 20psi I don't want to be that close to a pop bottle at 100Psi plus

    • @samTollefson
      @samTollefson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@computertechnician4896 I used 2-liter coke bottles it's like the ones he used in his tests the plastic is almost indestructible. My rocket setup would go up to about 70psi before it started to leak badly so that is when I would shoot it off, I never felt like it would blow but I also made the pipe part of the mechanism 7' long so the bottle was well above anyone's head so all you would get was wet.

If a neighbor complains to police of explosives being used,but if water filled air tank kept air out of bottle then noise would be suppressed to a minimum,however momentary high pressure water jet is still a danger so maintain safe distance...

    Maybe the first bottle failed early because of weakening from the additional valve inserted to its bottom. From what I could see, it looks like the rupture may have started from the valve hole. The other, unmodified bottle seemed to fare much better and it was actually the cap who let go. Cool experiment, thanks for posting.

      The rubber seal is designed to be the first to relieve excessive pressure before possible rupture. Also the threads are made pliable enough for the compression on the seal to relieve said pressure.

    You might want to try using just air in a bottle for explosions. Since water isn't compressible it will just spew out a lot of the time rather than exploding out. Air is very compressible so you would have more potential energy inside the bottle with just air. Probably resulting in a bigger/louder explosion. :)

    Hey u noticed the crack in the 1st bottle started from the point where u had installed the valve directly in the bottle, I mean opposite the cap, it is possible while drilling the hole some minor crack might have developed which caused the bottle to crack at much lower psi, the last bottle didn't had the 2nd valve may be the 1st bottle also could have withheld much more pressure.

      So most of them withstand up to about 1 MPa (10 bar). That's enough for me already! I'd like to pressure test another carbonated drink bottles because there's someone in my house that drinks a lot of it, but I don't have a thick PC (polycarbonate, very strong transparent plastic) sheet to protect myself or a camera from the explosion (oh well, I'll have to order one from Amazon), nor a pressure gauge other than the integrated one in my mini compressor. I'm thinking about getting a digital pressure gauge (I may make one myself, I have electronics knowledge).

So me and my friend switched off because we wanted to pressurize it as much as possible, he did the first 30 pumps and I was planning on doing another 30, by time we got to around the 55th pump the bottle just exploded and me being like 2 feet away from it had me my hearing go for a few seconds

    When I did this, the bottles took 260 PSI of air pressure before bursting.
    The blast was incredibly loud and would echo up and down the valley for quite some seconds before finally fading out.
    When the bottles burst, I could actually see the shock wave that came from the blast.
    Oh, those were fun times :) .

    • @CNCmachiningisfun
      @CNCmachiningisfun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it was pretty nutty alright :) .
      I had some rough idea of when the bottle was gonna bust, as it would swell out in the middle - shortly before it let go.
      I had a 2 cylinder, low speed compressor, driven by a 60V DC motor. It was able to reach 400 PSI, so the bottles never stood a chance against it :) .
      To maximise the 'goodness' of each blast, I raised the bottles about 20 feet above the ground, before bursting them.
      When these guys burst, they did so with such force that there was very little left of them to be found.
      Ahhh, that was waaaayyyy too much fun.

    • @CNCmachiningisfun
      @CNCmachiningisfun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, those fridge compressors really can push a lot of pressure.
      Since I am not on the power grid here, I had to make up my own version of the "bottle buster 9000".
      The resulting fun levels were dangerously high, so I am surprised that the fun police didn't come and take all my toys away ;) .

      @CNCmachiningisfun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeedy, being off the grid gives you a sense of freedom and independence that is hard to come by these days.
      Yeah, Macgyver would be proud :) .
      Solar panels produce all of the summer power, and wind turbines fill in some of the gaps when the sun is not shining.
      For those long winter months, I use a gasogen to generate my electricity. This machine lets me run a petrol engine without petrol. Instead, it runs on wood, using 1.8KG per hour at a shaft load of 2HP.
      This is an unusual kind of machine, but this old technology is gaining quite a following on the interwebs.
      If you take a look on YT for woodgas generators, and the like, you will see all sorts of cool Macgyverisms :) .

      +CNCmachiningisfun these are great for new years they rival any cherry bomb or firecracker in loudness i use aluminum foil and muriatic acid about a 16 inches of a roll of foil and about half of one of the bottle "nibs" with acid, all foil first then acid cap shake and throw you have a bout 15 seconds after combining them its very fun.

    • @CNCmachiningisfun
      @CNCmachiningisfun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      JBTYpr
      Ahhhh, lovely stuff indeed :) .
      A good blast is a great thing.
      Back in 2006, I made an Oxy-Hydro gas plant.
      It let me fill the bottles with a 2:1 mixture of Hydrogen and Oxygen.
      I used a home made spark plug that would tightly seal the neck of the bottle, to keep the mixture from being contaminated with air.
      To trigger the blast, I used an ignition coil on the end of a very long cable.
      When these exploded, the blast was monumental in its sheer violence.
      I could actually see the shock wave that came from the blasts.
      Oh, those were the days :) .

    ok... im not saying put a fish in there. but would that pressure kill a fish if it were in the bottle?

    • @chrisnotap
      @chrisnotap  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vaustick most fish I'm sure are used to going to great depths so theoretically a fish should be fine.......and like you say we're not saying to put a fish in there. Thanks for commenting.

    just throw some dry ice in the bottle, no need for compressed air

    That would look pretty cool if you just shut off the compressor, emptied the bottle and filled it again with just enough air to keep its shape. Looks like glass.

      +fletcher isakson I'm doing another video this time with just air for that dramatic blast and doing it on a bunch of the same bottles to get a good average.

    That was amazing - the bottle got twice biger. I wouldn't try to touch it in such condition, although it was depressurized a bit.

    I wonder if it is possible to strengthen the bottles by rolling them into duct tape. I imagine kind of the same thing they do to the composite tanks but with duct tape instead of carbon fiber.

      So what was the max pressure for a common 2.5 litter bottle?
      I've watched a bunch of water rocket trials recently and some of them reached 22 miles up. But they were specially built for high pressure. Up to 700 psi.

    Oh, Damn. I didn't know plastic bottles did this, well that stops my plans for filling plastic bottles with mostly water and pressurising them to around 13 bar.

  • @BryanRopar

    Well depending on where you shop you can get an air compressor w/h tank & pressure gauge, a hose, blow gun, and all the fittings for $75- allot safer!!

    A pressure washer would fill them faster, safer and the burst would be far quieter.

    Cracking stuff. I "detonated" a half-litre pop bottle inside a water-filled 80 litre dustbin, using a fridge compressor. The initial plan was to see how much water would be expelled by the bottle going off, then fill up and repeat with 1 litre, 2 litre and 3 litre bottles. That plan was scuppered by the half-litre bottle splitting the bin open. Still, TH-cam fodder is TH-cam fodder :D
