I have been using Astrohopper for 4 months and it works fine.
At times it is off when 1st orientating...I touch the hand symbol in upper corner...then orientate the phone screen to align on whatever im using as a start point...hit align...done.
I re-align usually ever 2 targets ,so far it has been working pretty good...when a target is off...its usually very close and requires a bit of moving ep a bit to find...in this case I realign....I have been able to find so much using Astrohopper.
As for the issue of touching the screen...I use a stylus makes life easier😁

I think the quality of the sensors in an individual phone can have a big impact. When i manually center on my first star, the Astrohopper map is way off. Sometimes so far that i have to set it to manual and drag it across 30 degrees of sky to even get it on the screen. A related issue, when i goto a star and re-align, it seems to erase the current alignment, so i have to drag it across the sky again even to get back to where i just was. Its as if it doesnt keep tabs on any alignment done so far and starts from scratch every time. It would be better if it could fine tune on top of alignments done so far in a session.

Those are two very good points and I’m sure the creator since he watches my channel. He may see this and that’s why I guess on my first video I said it could be tweaked and get better.
I’m using currently an iPhone 13 Pro, which isn’t too old only two years old but you could be correct somebody with a much older type of phone could be less accurate as well

I was able to find Uranus using astrohopper after aligning on Jupiter. The thing I noticed is that with high inclination the app wasn't able to track the sky anymore, but that could be a sensor issue of the smart phone that I used. Guess the compass works best with the phone being horizontally.
Also after the phone went to sleep, the alignment had to be done again.

There’s a reason why the starsense app and module use a mirror for on the fly plate solving, you need it to accurately point at objects time after time in one session. Celestron would not have spent the time and money on such a complex module if it weren’t necessary, I can invent a three wheeled car and save you money on tires but it won’t handle very well.

    • @JoeJaguar

I think this free app does have merit and it is possible with more practice. It can get easier and better and it could be a good second place alternative for the people that don’t want to buy the star sense telescopes
As the video shows when I was finding the four or five items with a StarSense, it’s much easier and faster
But I think in this hobby, it’s good to have a second option .

First of all I like your video for several reasons:
    1. I see some confusion regarding use of the app. Maybe better instructions. Have you noticed that the star you aligned on isn't actually one you wanted to it would solved your lots of headache - so It maybe UX question or maybe manual needs to be improved
    2. Safari and its zoom is highly problematic. I don't own iPhone myself (I'm android guy) I just wonder if the wrong selection of alignment star is a bug related to borken pinch zoom or not.
    3. Finally I suggest to start hopping between visible stars to see how it works and get used to the UI/UX. There was lots of iterations to make good UX but probably better tutorials are needed.
Other than that - thanks for kind words and I wish more developers would join. Finally it is open-source

    • @JoeJaguar
      @JoeJaguar  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, I appreciate you watching the video and your comments I wasn’t there to put you down in anyway
I’m basically just trying to help and see what would be better for the amateur community and I do see that you put a lot of time and work into it and I have to praise you for that
I am not really a Apk guy. I guess I’m old-school if I can see constellations and stars, I just star hop however, I have use lots of go tos as well
I have never used Safari or Stellarium, so I don’t know all the features at all and I would say I’m a very newbie person when it comes to those two apps
The only thing I can say, I didn’t need to know any of those apps or settings like Stellarium and Safari like I have even the first time I use StarSense it was just so easy to use. I just touch the screen it tells me where to go to the object, then I continue to the next object after that and then the next object after that so normally, I don’t even look at the Settings as well on StarSense and I’ve been very happy so for a brand new person that knows absolutely nothing it is a very easy system to use
Your system is also amazing that it’s free but I definitely found it much harder now again, maybe with those few pit chips that you pointed out today and if I keep trying a few more times with me finding stuff a lot easier for me in the future
However, again, just pointing out the StarSense I don’t need to know any of those things and I just have to align on anything and then I can literally find 20 3050 items in a night if I wanted to
So again, it was nice talking to you. It was amazing that you made this product. I don’t know if I’m the only one that had these issues or maybe again as I sent a video maybe we can improve on it which is nothing wrong with that
Again, thanks for watching. Appreciate it. Cheers.
Maybe I’ll do another video after another couple months of using it more and see how much easier it gets and taking all this information that you give me and we’ll see where were at at that time
I guess my final point to be I’m just looking at it from the standpoint of somebody like me that doesn’t know much about apps or telescopes or anything astronomy related like star names and constellations. What day find it even harder than me, considering I already know all that basic stuff anyway the only thing I don’t know is the app and the settings and how it’s run again I did find it super simple easy the first time I use the StarSense 114
I did run into a couple of minor problems like I wasn’t waiting for the plates all to finish finding before I was moving but it took just a few minutes to understand why it wasn’t turning green and then it was pretty simple after that anyway cheers we’ll talk soon

That would be nothing wrong with being second place but for now final conclusions still to be seen
Imagine if they were to tell you, or to tell me, we are the second best astronomer in the world. I would take that wholeheartedly as a grats compliment.

There’s another app that you could try. Also called Astro Hopper. I’ve also talked about this one as well. I’m not sure if it’s gonna be the same issue with your phone
Most people are not gonna change their phone just for a app. Most phones are fairly expensive these days.
Could you put a very thin sheet of foam where the module hold your phone or maybe a piece of cardboard?
I haven’t had any issues so far with my StarSense so I haven’t tried to solve any bugs or issues since everything works so far so I don’t have too many suggestions at this point
Try those things out and see if it works if not, maybe try to do a web search as I’m sure people who’ve had issues with their phone. Maybe try different things as well

After that video, the designer contacted me once he gave me the two tips then it worked much easier and that’s where I did a part two to Astro hopper you should watch it
But after those two tips, Astro hopper still takes longer to work than the StarSense where I can just tap on the screen and then go to that area
I don’t need to align on the brightest star of every constellation when going to a new item nor do I need to put on the search screen I want to see for each object so even though Astro hopper is good once you learn it it’s still harder than StarSense
