    Do you think Giovanni Barrecca and his daughter carried out this horrible crime alone? Or do you think the couple he'd met on Facebook was involved in the murder and torture that week? I'd be interested to hear your theories on this horrendous case.
    And thank you for joining the Frightful journey.

    Extremely bleak story. I have a feeling that Giovanni was always a few sandwiches short of a picnic, and was always going to end up hurting somebody in the name of something, whether that was religion, a garden dispute with neighbours, or breaking the pasta before you cook it. It's amazing and tragic how these awful events can occur if the wrong person meets the right other wrong person or people.

      Yeah, I know what you mean about him having some sort of rage or disdain that was going to latch on to someone at some point. The bit about him forcing his animal loving son to kill animals and stuff then was a horrible example of that. Thanks for watching this difficult story! I appreciate the comment, too.

    Being Sicilian myself, I can tell you that self-appointed evangelical pastor Amatulli has nothing to do with this crime, but Carandente and Fina (Fratelli di Dio: God's brotherhood) simply wanted Barreca's house: they had noticed his religious mania and we're trying to control him and the family when things got them out of hand. It's a story of war among the poor.

    If there was demonic possession in that house. I honestly believe it wasn't any of the victims. but the murderers who were possessed. It's shocking how evil people will project their evil onto others

    • @elbestia
      @elbestia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. Not demonic possession. Such claims in my country (Italy) will just land you in psychiatric ward. The guy got brainwashed by an Evengelical Church and the guy was never mentally stable in the first place. He was so messed up mentally that he believed that cats were creature of the devil. There are many testinmony from the neighbours in which it was stated that he beat up his wife. The 17 year daughter was also suspected to be involved.

    This was a great episode and it reminded me of the case from Germany that I don’t think any other podcasters covered. Towards the end of the video, when you were giving your analysis, I thought, he’s channeling Matt Hunter, and indeed, you brought in some sociology. I think in these cases, people look to psychology but it’s sociology that can provide better insights. It’s social conditions, like the disenchantment with established religions, social isolation, fear and uncertainty while lacking social connection-as during the pandemic-combined with the ability of social media to spread ideas and even social contagion, that open the door to such cases. This is an extreme but this kind of thing has upended people’s lives.

    • @IntoTheFog
      @IntoTheFog  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      RIfat, thank you so much for this very thoughtful comment. I know what you mean about the Matt Hunter vibe, toward the end!
      And yes, I really see a lot of parallels with the German Hotel Exorcism. You're right in that I think my podcast was one of the only, of not the only, one to cover that case. I've provided a link in the description for people to find that episode too.
      Thanks for your input!

    There will always be people who use belief systems as an excuse to control and/or harm others. Religion often gives people permission to act on their own hateful judgements. The irony is, if there are devils and demons, they don't have to do anything... they can just let humans be humans.

    Satan was, indeed, in that home and did, indeed, attempt to eliminate that family one-by-one. Only the father was the devil's instrument and he didn't even need to be possessed to commit his evil works. He was already won over to evil through his superstition and hypocritical self-righteousness.

    I actually went to a pentacostal church or tried to anyway and within 2 visits some of the congregation thought I had demons in me so they got me in the sanctuary after service under false pretenses locked the door so my mom couldn't get to me and held me down while a crazy man did his version of an exorcism on me. Held me down screaming at me and shoving fingers in my mouth and when I would naturally cough he would say to the others (about 12 ppl) "see! See i told you that she has demons and the coughing is a sign that they don't like the word of god" a lot of other very unsavory things happened before I could fight my way loose and run screaming to find my mother it was an awful experience that went on for well over 2 hours totally against my will!

    Fascinating true story. The father and the daughter working together to exorcise the family of possession reminds me of what the French call Folie a Deux,whereby 2 people collude in a heinous act but believe in the validity of what they are thinking ,saying to each other and eventually doing. The maids of Le Mans is a famous case of Folie with a dominant sister {later classed as schizophrenic and criminally insane} and a quieter more submissive sister murdered their employer and her daughter. Whilst I do believe in the power of the supernatural for both good and for evil,in this instance I wonder if Folie a Deux with the dominant father and submissive daughter taking place.

    My mother was Pentecostal. She believed that if you made the body uncomfortable for the devil, he would not stay. Beatings, hours and hours of prayers and "the laying on of hands". I'm not surprised that the five years old believed he had a demon inside him...they can beat you over the head with it until you do believe it. Prayers for this family.

    This is the perfect example of obscurantism. A distinction must be made between people who suffer from demonic possession, and those who deliberately act evil and the demons themselves. An exorcism is a PRAYER to HELP a person, it is not a torture session, only the demon "suffers" during this ritual. The person will feel better afterwards. Of course, if there are physical symptoms, a doctor's advice is necessary.
    So sad for these young boys and woman.

    A note to the uploader: I have found that too many content providers adjust their background atmospheric levels a little excessive. While atmospheric effects and music can help a story, sometimes it can interfere, somewhat, with the narration. Just a suggestion to bring this matter to your attention and possible adjustments to improve your series.
