  • DIY BERKEY-INSPIRED WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM FOR YOUR HOME
    IF YOU LIVE IN A STATE WHERE BERKEY DOES NOT SHIP TO, YOU CAN OBTAIN FILTERS ON AMAZON AND MAKE YOUR OWN SYSTEM
    Some items listed below contain links to my Affiliate link with Amazon. By using these link(s), I may receive a small commission. You do not need to use the links below. The stock pots used in this video were obtained from Wally World and are reflective of the $30 price point shared in this video. Links to Amazon has a higher price point, but are added as a convenience should you not be able to locate stock pots elsewhere.
    What You'll Need:
    2 -Metal Stock Pots with handles and metal lids Order here: amzn.to/3H37oTE
    1-Spigot for a beverage container Order here: amzn.to/3AQVOIv
    1- Sharpie for marking
    1 - Drill
    2 - drill bits ( one bit will need to be close to the diameter of the spigot you will be using, while the other will need to be smaller than the size of the rivets used to secure the handles to the stock pot lids)
    1- small rasp to remove metal burrs from drilled holes
    2 - Berkey black purification filters Order here: amzn.to/3LMkOY0
    Step One: locate where you would like to place your spigot on the stock pot that will be placed on the bottom. Mark the location with a sharpie. Using your drill and appropriate bit, create a hole approximately one inch from the bottom of the stock pot. Use a rasp to remove any burrs from the edge of the hole.
    Step 2: Feed the spigot through the hole and use the accompanying hardware to secure. Be sure to note location of washers to ensure a good fit and avoid water leakage.
    Step 3: Using a drill and a small bit, drill the rivets that hold the handle in place for the lid of the bottom stock pot. Remove the handle and all portions of the rivets, exposing the two holes in the top of the lid. These holes should accommodate the drainage tips of the ceramic filters. Do not force these ends through the holes. The ends are made of plastic and CAN snap off if you're not careful. If the holes are too tight, use the drill bit to widen them slightly. Continue until the ends feed through snugly. DO NOT AFFIX FILTERS AT THIS TIME
    Step 4: Turn the second stock pot upside down on your work surface. Place the lid from the bottom stock pot (the one you just removed the handle from) on the pot and use the sharpie to mark the location of the holes onto the bottom of the stock pot.
    Step 5: Using the drill bit you used to remove the handle from the lid, drill the two respective holes into the bottom of the stock pot, Once again, make sure the filter ends will snugly pass through these holes.
    Step 6: Prime your filters. Your filters should come with the necessary hardware to aide in priming. Thoroughly prime the filters as per the instructions. Failure to do so may result in poor filtration rate.
    Step 7: Place the washer onto the first filter. Feed the end of the filter into one of the holes you drilled into the second stock pot. Continue to feed the filter end through one of the holes in the first stock pot's lid. Add the wing nut and secure ONLY finger tight.
    Step 8: Repeat step 7 for the second filter.
    Step 9: Once both filters are in place, securely tighten both wingnuts, being careful to not over-tighten, which may result in breakage or leakage. Once both filters have been secured, place the filtered pot/lid combo on top of the pot with the spigot. The fit should be perfect!
    Step 10: Add a few quarts of water to the top stock pot and allow it to drain through the filters into the bottom pot. Look for leaks. This step may take some time for the water to filter.
    Step 11: Once you have addressed any possible leaks, you're ready to sit back and enjoy your new water filtration system.

    One thing I learned was that there is a vacuum/pressure that occurs during the filter process. When I put mine together and tried it out. It ran good for about 15 minutes, then slowed down. I realized that it was creating a vacuum/pressure in the bottom pot. I put a small piece of a wood cloths pin under the lid. This fixed the issue. It fills up just fine now. I may add a small vent hole to the lid.

    This looks so much better and so much healthier for you than the 5 gallon plastic bucket systems :) Not much more expensive either and will last forever. Thanks for sharing this video! I am about to pull the trigger and buy these pots, I'll use your affiliate links. I am going to get the stainless steel spigot I think. My guy can drill the holes like you suggest, so much easier than cutting stuff out and epoxy. How are they holding up for you? No rust in the stainless steel? I am really looking for a more affordable filter set than the Berkey Black but I don't know if there is one which is made the same and works as well. I see filter sets for $50. One guy on youtube cleans his Berkey Black filters hooking them up in reverse manner and using vinegar water solution; he say she has 10k gallons on them so far.. so maybe these things can last forever if properly maintained.

      Hello, Jennifer, and thank you for the positive feedback. I’m happy to hear you’re planning on making a system for yourself! Awesome! I recommend using the 12 qt pots or up…10qt is just too tight a fit with the filters.
      My son recently completed his system and loves it! We’ve experienced absolutely NO issues with our system. No rust at all, but are in need of thoroughly cleaning both pots; primarily the top pot due to all of the impurities in our well water. But, I’m happy to report that we’ve used this system every single day since we made it…and love it! Amazon is fickle, and I’m not sure if the links will work (it’s been a while since I posted them) but I’ll update them for ya as best I can! Have fun and enjoy! (And, yes, use the other lid…it really does work so much better than just trying to stack one pot inside of the other). Cheers!

    I enjoyed the video..thank you...I plan on making one...however...you said without the filter it cost around $30 to make but the link you gave us to Amazon is $30.13 for each pot totalling $60.26, and they seem to be different pots than what you have used....when I checked Mainstay Stainless Steel at Wallmart they appear to be the ones you actually used, I can tell by the handle.. the Mainstays are only $11.97 each.....that's how you came up with Your total coming to around $30 without the filter. I felt others should know this so their price for the total filter system can come down more by price being cut more than half for the pots. Blessings ♡

    Hi! I like your build and using the lid handle as a template for the holes is a great idea. I do have a question though. I am wondering why you need the lid at all between the two pots. Couldn't you simply mount one pot on top of the other and not use the lid. As long as there was enough of a lip on the pots that you buy it should be stable enough.

    • @countrymamamusings7701
      @countrymamamusings7701  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bill...It's a valid question, and one that can certainly be attempted based on the stock pots utilized to make the system. The pots I used didn't lend stability to the build if done that way. The only thing providing support to the upper pot in the scenario you present (using the pots we have here) was the thin rivet presence inside the bottom pot. It allowing the top pot to shift, and it wasn't something we were willing to risk with such expensive filters... didn't want to risk breaking them. Also, the lid in between the two pots does provide a bit of an overhang for the second pot, preventing dust and debris from ultimately entering the bottom pot. If you have debris, or possibly dead fruit flies (something we deal with here on our farm from time to time) Id rather that bit of unpleasantness be on the edge of a lid as opposed to the area where the pots meet...lift that top pot for any reason(and we do to check water levels, etc) and the debris falls into the lower pot. Yuck! I'd like to suggest that if you try this system, as shown, try it as you've posed here, and let me know how it works, but save that extra lid, just in case! You can always add it later if you find you need it :) Looking forward to hearing back from you ! :) Have a blessed day :)

    Great thank you! But, I don't understand why the second lid is even needed. Wouldn't the bottom of the top pot be enough, and one pan would fit into another?

    • @countrymamamusings7701
      @countrymamamusings7701  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For stability, I recommend using the second lid. The bottom of the top pot will slide down into the lower pot which limits its capacity to hold the volume of water you filter. Also, you risk the top pot getting stuck. If you’re going to purchase two pots for this project, the lids are included, so why not use them both! Of course, there’s always room for improvement in every project, so if you try eliminating the 2nd lid, I’d love to hear back from ya to see how it works for you 😊

      Hi Bryon, great questions! According to hubby, he believes he used a 1/4 drill bit for the rivets and to make the holes for the filters, and he used a center punch to start them…. He said with stainless steel, just take your time; it takes a bit, but patience pays off. So glad we didn’t have to do a lot of cutting for this DIY!
      The spigot has the sealing washers on both the outside and the inside. The filters have a washers on both sides, as well. Hope this helps 😊. Thanks for watching

      It has to do with Iowa's and California's laws. Both states require specific testing that is VERY expensive and needs to be repeated yearly. Berkey has already completed testing that supersedes this test, but they are insisting on the specific test. So, as a result of not complying, Berkey will not ship here... There is a big off-grid store in Ohio that sells them, and they won't ship to us either bc of this state law.

      I am unsure of the brand as I removed the stickers.... but we used 12 quart pots here. I would recommend 12 qt, or 16 qt. I know I mentioned 10 qt in the video, but the filters are too long, so 12 is the smallest I would recommend. :)

      Yes, you need to have something to keep the upper pot from going into the bottom pot. You COULD try to balance the upper pot on the rivets from the handles of the lower pot, but it is sketchy, at best.

      Hi Justin ... we used whatever washers were on the filters when sent to us. I believe there is a washer inside the top tank, the threaded filter end then went through that, the pot, directly thru the holes in the bottom lid, then another washer placed on the threaded end, followed by the wing nut. There is nothing between the top stock pot and the bottom lid. Hope this answers your question 😃

    • @countrymamamusings7701
      @countrymamamusings7701  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know! It has to do with the state’s individual certification requirements. The company has certification greater than or equal to what the state requires, but not THE specific certification they want... it is very expensive and is only valid a year or two, so the company doesn’t care to play the state’s red tape game...

    Great video!!! Thank you for sharing. I have a question. We don't use our filtration system all the time. Just mainly when we go on RV trips. We may go a month or so with using. And we will probably not use it for 2-3 months in the winter. Do we have to reprime the filters when we have gone for a couple months of not using?

    • @countrymamamusings7701
      @countrymamamusings7701  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for stopping by, Stacy! I would suggest (my personal opinion only) keeping your priming adapter handy and prime your filters any time they dry out during these times of non-use. This will reduce/eliminate any air pockets and will allow your filters to work at their best capacity. When you visit the official Berkey website, there is a chat feature where you can chat directly with one of their representatives 😊. Hope this helps …

      @@countrymamamusings7701 I was wondering about that same situation. Do you have to use 2 fluoride filters with the 2 carbon filters or would 1 fluoride filter with the 2 regulars be enough in a 12-quart stockpot? If you have to use 4 filters then I am guessing that a 14 qt or 16 qt size would be needed. Also what a DIY stand for the complete stockpot filter system would be great. Have you done one yet?

    • @countrymamamusings7701
      @countrymamamusings7701  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@favoritechrisitanmusic4902 as I recall,, each ceramic filter is good for approx 3k gallons (depending on the brand you purchase.... I personally believe its best to just step up and get the Berkey filters from Amazon) ... so, you could theoretically use 1 ceramic filter and 1 fluoride filter in the two holes left from removing the handle...
      Or, if you wanted 2 of each, I would definitely recommend starting with the bigger stock pots. With regards to a stand; i picked up an adorable antique side table (rounded on the front and straight across the back) and painted it with chalk paint... it fits perfectly at the end of our countertop. The system sits there and is the perfect height for refilling and dispensing ...

    The lid has a bend to it, how did you secure it when the lid is not flat? Did you turn the lid over to the flatter side when you attached it to the filters?

    • @countrymamamusings7701
      @countrymamamusings7701  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Samsonian. Nope, didn't turn it over... it sits on the bottom pot as it was designed to. The top pot rests on it easy enough and we have no issues with it. It is secured by the threads of the filters and is snug. Not all stock pots/stock pot lids are made the same. If it's of concern, perhaps locate a pot and lid that are a bit more flat. But I can attest that these are working fine for us, as is. Hope you're able to build a successful system. :)

      Hello @GiveGidPraise ... the 12 qt and 16 qt stock pots will both accommodate the filters, in my experience. Just don't do 10qt; they're just not tall enough (I know I mention the 10qt in the video, but dont..lol)
      It really comes down to personal preference and need. How much water do you want avaliable? It's just my husband and myself, so we do just fine with the 12 qt setup. If you have a larger family and will be going through more water, the 16 qt might be better. Also, consider where you will be keeping your setup... counter space is prime real estate and these systems won't fit under the upper kitchen cabinets in most cases... we keep our system on an antique side table we picked up at auction ...it fits perfectly at the end of our counter where we prepare our coffee and tea :) My son recently completed his set up using this video as his tutorial, and he said they are enjoying it and it's working great!
