It is incredible how easy it was to finish on a high position for those with a top car. An average driver could easily get a couple of wins and podiums.
The amount of drivers who Wilson failed to make champions is just staggering: Mcrae (people focus on his crash in Wales '01 but what about the amount of times his car broke down, let alone the uncompetitive machinery for most of his Ford tenure),Gronholm (Marcus made his own mistakes in Japan and Ireland '07 but that Portugal rally mistake by the team cost Marcus a heap of points), Hirvonen (idk why on earth they didn't swap their drivers in Sardinia and when Wilson said it was to rebuild Latvala's confidence, that sure went a long way when he repaid the team in Poland by effectively gifting loeb an extra point)
@@UyandaMaboea-dv3qc Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankunnen also failed to become champions with M-Sport as well. The only driver who has ever won with M-Sport is Sebastien Ogier, who, let's be honest, at that time apart from Loeb (who was doing a part-time schedule anyways), was by quite a long way the best driver in the WRC. Ogier would have won the title with anyone in those two years except maybe Citroen.
@@drybones7475 Latvala didn't not let them win, it was Mikko who said he wouldn't accept Latvala moving over for him. I know it's a very confusing situation since Mikko would have benefited from it, but he was trying to be courteous. But unfortunately for him, it cost him the World Championship.
Petter silvery battling in an 3 year old xsara against dani sordo in the new C4 at points shows just how good solberg is
Great season during dark times and I'm still gutted Hirvonen didn't win it...
The things I'd do for manufacturers to come in or return to the sport.
When you re-watch this in 2017 (as I am), this was dark times for the WRC. 6 minute gap to 4th place?!
Indeed. It was a period that except a few drivers all the others were in the same level and loeb was conquering everything.
Sad days indeed no subaru no suzuki and no future for the wrc as a hole.
+1

Yeah 2009-2010 was a dark age because of the number of manufactures, but 2009 was a beautiful season, an incredible battle
I Think Mikko Hirvonen was Real Champion 2009
Too bad Suzuki & Subaru gone after 2008 and that makes me lost interest watching WRC
Same here. Made it just a 2 team championship as realistically the “junior teams” wouldn’t have been allowed to challenge their main teams
If Hirvonen had taken the team orders in Sardinia he would have been World Champion
Yep, Ford should have put more effort to help Hirvonen in championship fight. Like Citroen did for Loeb

17:12 - That cost him the championship
if i was mikko i would be a bit angry towards latvala
@@joonaskotilainen1881 Not only Latvala did not let him win later in the year, but he also crashed gifting points to Sébastien.

1.25 playback quality is better than this lmao
Rally Ireland 😍😍
LOVE. WRC
Μακάρι να έρθει πίσω το Ακρόπολις αδερφέ
La fantastique Citroën Xsara toujours de service!
MIko should've continued the stage with the bonnet on. Markko did it...
Markko had a small gap under the bonnet where to look through from
Godawful quality.
