LOL... the old reverse psychology trick. My channel currently has zero content and one subscriber. I've got the whole "stuck figuring out my studio setup" problem. I've been writing scripts and adding posts to my blog, but every time I set the camera up, I just shake my head at the result and end up deleting it in disgust. Oh well... back to trying more things to get a look I'm happy with :).
I used to be teaching photography lighting 20 years ago and used these tricks. Now, we have LED bulbs and more! All of these just came back to my memory! Thank you very much for my total recall! I'll be back!
The issue is I don't have $1k for a light and than some more cash for a diffuser. Even if I did. The interviews I do are very run and gun so I would never have time to set this up.
I love your teaching style. It’s so... “not TH-camry”. I’m not even learning anything new lol. Except for that mirror trick, noice. Keep up the good work 👍
Watched this one upside down. We followed your last instructions to a "tee." clicked the thumbs down and then clicked that funny foreign word in the big box next to the upside down bell thingy. Since we kinda recognized the bell icon, we decided to click on that to notify you that we followed your instructions. Thank you for the clarity. The totally rigged setup was the best--for obvious reasons. The second best was actually the last option you showed us with the budget setup. Just knock the side light down another 1.5 to 2 stops and it'll make the subject pop off the screen. We tell people all the time that budget lighting is not just about budgeting $ is about budgeting what is important in the scene.... Since it's just a boring wall, better lighting on the subject is the wiser use of the cheap lights--unless the back wall/location is important to the interview. But there again, our musical interludes on set are usually "if I only had a brain."
I’m on my way to film my first interview as well as being the interviewer without any assistant. Watching your video just bumped my confidence up and gave me the positive energy I needed! Thank you so much and of course I’m not subscribing and disliking this video 😂😂😂 bless 🙏🏾✌🏾
I could watch an extended interview with the subject matter in any lighting situation. I’m glad you showed cheaper lighting setup. It’s great to try to think outside the box. Location shoots go wrong and at that point, it’s all you have.
Tape on a mirror used as a textured background light...that's a new one. I've heard of shining through cookies but never reflecting it on a mirror with tape! I've gotta try that!
You executed the content of this video like a boss. The knowledge is great, but the execution of the delivery of the knowledge is A+. You carefully emphasize key terms while displaying abundantly clear visual examples for an audiovisual slap in the face of easy-to-understand knowledge. I'm not even a video person, this just happened to be recommended during my lunch and I clicked on it, watched the whole thing, liked and subscribed.
Ya know I've been watching all these filmmaker youtubers for a while and thinking how awesome stage lighting can be put to use for filmmakers. Watching you gaff tape a mirror just drove that theory home. Some stage lights on a dimmer with gobos would make that boring room incredible. That being said being creative like this: two thumbs up ebert & roeper
I use the construction, cheapo lights (flood lights). They cost about $6.00, the bulb is extra, of course. I produce films for the town and non-profits so there's no way I'm going to buy expensive lighting. Thank you for the placement tips. The lighting has always been an issue for me and the interviews look okay, but something is just not right. Now I know it's the lighting. : )) I liked the set up with the tape on the reflecting mirror (D). That is SO creative. I'm also going to start using back lighting. It's a miracle.
Please keep doing these!!!!!!! This is a real class. So many others want to charge outrageous prices that every one cant always afford. Thank you so much for your probono work. God bless u
Man, you are doing an amazing job! Thanks a lot, it’s so pleasant to watch you. And you speak very distinctly which is very useful for non English speakers.
You know...the setup at the end was not bad at all. Just love seeing good examples to let me know it’s still about how you use the equipment and not what kind of equipment
You could use the sun as a source of light, and if you get close enough to it, it will burn this mediocre channel away from existen- I CAN'T BE NEGATIVE I LOVE THIS CHANNEL
I'm a photographer getting into YT and video... this was a very valuable video, you're direct, easy to understand, and you give us options. Thanks for the great vid!
I was thinking about starting a youtube channel with filmmaking tutorials, but for some reason i didn't start... Your videos are really inspiring and i decided to just start! i'm gonna upload my introduction video tomorrow!
hey buddy! if you try to use these cheap led bulbs try by removing the white covering of the bulb it can be twisted and removed in some bulbs and in others you have to cut through them, after removing the diffusion layer of the bulb, you will have a light source with straight beam of light. Try it, it works fine, attach some gel on to it and it's ready to go.
Dude, I can't explain how much you read my mind with this video! I wanted to know the difference with backlight and side light hahaha and you did exactly that when I asked myself for it! Great job!
Man I just happen to stumble upon one of your videos and am now watching my third one. This fr is one of the most actually useful TH-cam channels I’ve seen so far really informative real life info being said.
I got to a Art and Design university and though I am majoring in Graphic Design I have taken a couple classes in production and I feel like the way the video explains things would be very similar to what you’d learn in class.
Dude, I love your style, your tone, and the underhanded nature of your humour. Thanks for the AMAZING content. This is legit soooooooo helpful and I feel like this channel has pulled back the curtain on the whole lighting game.
I saw your name in the comments on a realty video 3 minutes ago. I had never heard of you before. Then I clicked over to a video I saved earlier today (this one), and I saw you yourself commenting here. I guess it’s time for me to enter my MeetKevin era.
God i love this channel, gives me a good mood and definitely motivates me and gives me comfort, knowing it's not so hard to shape light, as we are seeing here.. this stuff take anxiety away
I feel like for some reason I preferred just the key with the darker background. When you added the backlight I have no doubt that's more the correct way to do it, but I feel like before it looked kind of modern and cool and then with the backlight I instantly felt like I was watching one of those corporate videos.
uhm.. ok so this video was suggested out of nowhere and it was amazing and simple, yet thorough and professional yet chill. like I loved it. wth!
That’s a pin!
Epic Light Media 😲 🙌🏼
Super Manny its awesome!!
My name is also Manny, and I concur.
🎶How do you solve a problem like Maria...🎶
That mirror trick blew my mind :o
but it felt like some plants outside the window with a harsh sunlight.
Thank you for your comment! I went back to the video to look for that part after reading it. wow.
Yea.... me too!!
People, stop subscribing. We need to keep this channel a secret.
LOL... the old reverse psychology trick. My channel currently has zero content and one subscriber. I've got the whole "stuck figuring out my studio setup" problem. Exactly! )))
Right? He said just over 30,000 in April, and now it's practically June and there are 51,200 subs. What happened?!
AGREEEEE
OH shoot your right, we can't all have superior lighting knowledge. Otherwise we won't stand out from the rest...
Kids would learn better if this is how things were taught in schools. And that whistle solo... incredible.
"How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" from The Sound of Music..... LOL
I don’t understand why there aren’t more videos like this GOLD
Please don't stop being creative, your videos are fucking perfect. Brilliant education, simple, entertaining, straight to the point. Love it!
My favorite part of this video was when it was finally over so I could hit replay and watch it again
I used to be teaching photography lighting 20 years ago and used these tricks.
Now, we have LED bulbs and more!
All of these just came back to my memory!
Thank you very much for my total recall!
I'll be back!
This is crap. I'm still gonna watch it and leave a thumbs up. Click the bell notification and be pissed off with this video.
The issue is I don't have $1k for a light and than some more cash for a diffuser. Even if I did. The interviews I do are very run and gun so I would never have time to set this up.
@@menoats Then just bring one light with a diffuser and you're good to go anywhere
These videos are garbage i'm going to watch every single one.
Love your work! Specifically the straight to the point part without hours of vlog beforehand!
I hate those tutorials
C & d had such good lightning, thanks for awsome tips!
Love from Kazakhstan
I love your teaching style. It’s so... “not TH-camry”. I’m not even learning anything new lol. Except for that mirror trick, noice. Keep up the good work 👍
@Matthew Herrington Oooh, I like that comparison.
This is like Blue's Clues but for adults and it's about lighting. Honestly a different tone on youtube and i love it
Thank you for having the heart/desire to help folks with ZERO knowledge, like me.
One of the most entertaining tutorials of how to light an interview I saw in along time.
Thank you
Option "C" is fantastic. I liked the video very much.
How can one video provide more value then an entire film course?! Love it!!
The best is showing what normal looks like then gradually making it better.
You guys are seriously tremendous. Not sure we deserve you but definitely glad you're here !
This is probably the best tutorial I've ever seen on anything.
Good to know I’m not the only one that whistles the sound of music when setting up equipment!
the mirror blew my mind. never would have thought of that
Need more of this, guide to lighting. You prove that lighting is everything
My respect for lighting has never been greater since watching this channel. Inspired. Thank you.

But there again, our musical interludes on set are usually "if I only had a brain."
"D" was my favorite setup, you are very patient and long winded. Thank you for being a great content creator.
I’m on my way to film my first interview as well as being the interviewer without any assistant. Watching your video just bumped my confidence up and gave me the positive energy I needed! Thank you so much and of course I’m not subscribing and disliking this video 😂😂😂 bless 🙏🏾✌🏾
I literally just discovered this Chanel like an hour and now im on an Epic Light Media video marathon. Love all your content. Great sense of humor
My favorite was D, because the mirror is the one thing that makes the boring wall interesting.
I could watch an extended interview with the subject matter in any lighting situation. I’m glad you showed cheaper lighting setup. It’s great to try to think outside the box. Location shoots go wrong and at that point, it’s all you have.
I am slowly and intensely falling in love with this channel, thank you sir.
Hey thanks!!!!!!
this content is so straight to the point and awesome it hurts.
The mirror effect!!!
Mind blowing 🤯🤯🤯!!!!
Thanks 🙏.
Great tutorial.
Unexpected bonus bit with the budget lights. thanks for the tips
Thats all I used 20yrs ago in the beginning doing B-glam images longer exposures. Glad to have studio lights now!
That mirror idea with the tape on it looked excellent. I was not expecting that. Appreciate all the info and tricks!
Came for the sweet lighting, stayed for the even more dope whistling of How Do You Solve a Problem. It's the sound of music to my ears.
Tape on a mirror used as a textured background light...that's a new one. I've heard of shining through cookies but never reflecting it on a mirror with tape!
I've gotta try that!
E was my favorite but I did enjoy when you turned the light around and became Elvis!
Just right on time for my virtual graduation videos! Thanks!!!
You executed the content of this video like a boss. The knowledge is great, but the execution of the delivery of the knowledge is A+. You carefully emphasize key terms while displaying abundantly clear visual examples for an audiovisual slap in the face of easy-to-understand knowledge. What a compliment!!!! I’m so happy that this video was helpful for someone who isn’t even in film. Much thanks!
This sense of humor is why I subscribed to thia channel.
Great to see Gene helping you out
E was very cool and using the mirror with tape was absolutely brilliant!
Probably one of the best tutorial videos on TH-cam period. Very nicely produced.
I liked the key light only. They all looked great though, but I just like that dramatic look.
E for sure...it's more pleasing to the eye
This is a great channel, I know most of the stuff but it helps to refresh the night before a shoot and I appreciate the presentation
Dude, I feel like you're the Jeff Goldbum/Mr. Rogers/Bob Ross of TH-cam filmmaking tutorials and for that, I thank you.
I use the construction, cheapo lights (flood lights). They cost about $6.00, the bulb is extra, of course. I produce films for the town and non-profits so there's no way I'm going to buy expensive lighting. Thank you for the placement tips. I’ve got lots of TH-cam accounts and I’m going to subscribe to you from each of them, you just try to stop me. Damn fine work.
The mirror cookie is amazing
I definetively like your state of mind. Stay like you are.
Came randomly but was so helpful. I really had issues with lighting in my videos. Thanks once again
First time I see the tape idea on a mirror. Great idea
Please keep doing these!!!!!!! This is a real class. So many others want to charge outrageous prices that every one cant always afford. Thank you so much for your probono work. God bless u
that “how do you solve a problem like Maria” was 😍😂
You are a pretty good teacher and funny at the same time.
Thanks for the massive value
Man, you are doing an amazing job! Thanks a lot, it’s so pleasant to watch you. And you speak very distinctly which is very useful for non English speakers.
I literally can’t believe how valuable your content is. Just found this channel a week ago. Subbed after two videos. This makes video 4.
This channel is a breath of fresh air
D is the one i love, the use of tapes on the glass was genius and very creative..E is economical..think Im gonna mix both..
This channel is my textbook.
You know...the setup at the end was not bad at all. Just love seeing good examples to let me know it’s still about how you use the equipment and not what kind of equipment
MORE of this type of video please. Very satisfying to know the outcome of dirt cheap vs expensive. 4 thumbs up !
that whistle is so awesome
you always inspire me every day... thank you for your sharing with the poor student like me... i love you..
You're on fire! I'm always on a budget unfortunately and seeing that budget lightning BLEW MY MIND 🤯
You could use the sun as a source of light, and if you get close enough to it, it will burn this mediocre channel away from existen- I CAN'T BE NEGATIVE I LOVE THIS CHANNEL
Jajajaja me too 😂❤
Pedro Maia 🤣
LMAO!
Dood bro, youve saved a life. Your explaination is so key
D and E are my favorite lightings.
I'm a photographer getting into YT and video... this was a very valuable video, you're direct, easy to understand, and you give us options. Thanks for the great vid!
This Channel is my source of light
I was thinking about starting a youtube channel with filmmaking tutorials, but for some reason i didn't start... Your videos are really inspiring and i decided to just start! i'm gonna upload my introduction video tomorrow!
Well done, loved how you broke it down into steps. thanks for your efforts
"How do you solve a problem like Maria" from Sound of Music......now I got that tune on my head....
Dang this makes me wish I had more money for nice lights but these concepts are still so helpful!
hey buddy! if you try to use these cheap led bulbs try by removing the white covering of the bulb it can be twisted and removed in some bulbs and in others you have to cut through them, after removing the diffusion layer of the bulb, you will have a light source with straight beam of light.
Try it, it works fine, attach some gel on to it and it's ready to go.
Option E - quite surprisingly... Well done sir. Thumbs up from South Africa!!! OH!!! And ditto on the whistle solo!!!
Dude, I can't explain how much you read my mind with this video! I wanted to know the difference with backlight and side light hahaha and you did exactly that when I asked myself for it! Great job!

So kind!!! Thanks that means a lot. I love talking about this stuff...
Dude, I love your style, your tone, and the underhanded nature of your humour. Thanks for the AMAZING content. This is legit soooooooo helpful and I feel like this channel has pulled back the curtain on the whole lighting game.
First sincere video creator ever.
Thank you, for making your videos so understandable and easy going.
Best thing to wake up in Germany to. A New ELM Video! Thx guys. Very informative again. Keep it up.
absolute legend man, sorted me out in 10 mins
Loved that mirror trick.
Epic. Edit: Here before this has 2 million views.
I'm on 2020 quarantine. Like it if it already ended! :D
Love your Roni Rona Finance Videos!
I saw your name in the comments on a realty video 3 minutes ago. I had never heard of you before. Then I clicked over to a video I saved earlier today (this one), and I saw you yourself commenting here. I guess it’s time for me to enter my MeetKevin era.
Finally, TH-cam came out with a good suggestion!
Love this, the idea w/ the mirror!
God i love this channel, gives me a good mood and definitely motivates me and gives me comfort, knowing it's not so hard to shape light, as we are seeing here.. this stuff take anxiety away
Clean, easy to understand. Thanks!
Great and simple setup! Thank you very much! Best!
The cheap setup is so good!
Thanks for the great work and occasional chuckles!
Glad to see your channel blowing up. I think it's going a lot farther👍
Also, whistling Maria while adjusting the setup🤣 you the man!
Loved the harsh “A” look!
This channel deserves millions of subscribers. I love your videos!
I feel like for some reason I preferred just the key with the darker background.
