to make life easy pressing the new bearing into the drum, stick the bearings in the freezer, get it out just before you need to fit it, heat up the drum with a blowtorch or a kettle of boiling water. doing this will make the bearing smaller and the drum hole larger. dont forget to keep everything clean.
NEVER install bearings by hitting them with a hammer! Either use a press, or put the bearing in the freezer for 24H to shrink, and the drum in an oven so heat wil expand the mounting place. The bearing wil fit easily. But no hammer. Besides that, congratulations for doig it yourself!
As long as you hit the outer race using a suitably sized socket or the old bearing then there is nothing wrong with this. A bearing press does exactly the same thing, it just exerts a constant force rather than an impact. If you're careful there is nothing wrong with the hammer method.
