They start with bohemian because they only have 20 minutes. This gets the whole crowd singing along on the first song - it gets the crowd into it immediately
I was upset they cut my favourite part from that! Freddie keeps singing with the crowd a bit then stops and goes "Fuck you."

I remember that performance as if was yesterday... I was in front of the TV that summer, I was 14 and saying to myself I'm watching history in the happening. Freddie came in as a force of nature.

No tapes, No lipsyncing, Just pure talent.
Yeah, with the exception of the opera section on Rhapsody, if they couldn't reproduce it with the four of them (plus the touring keyboardist) they just did without. Come to think of it, nowadays if they can't do it with Adam and the same-sized touring band (with the same touring keyboardist) they do without.
Almost all live...they used a click track for "Radio Gaga." There was sequenced synthesizer lines in that one.

Everyone always comments how Freddie’s voice was awesome etc etc (which it obviously was)... but people often don’t understand how the technical marvel and physicality of his vocal abilities are literally unmatched - so much so that scientists actually proved it! Firstly, not only did he belt out an astonishingly huge range (he was naturally a baritone but commonly sang tenor) but also had crazy agility within this range. He was also capable of sub harmonics (using parts of the voice not naturally used when talking or singing). Then there was his vibrato which rocked at much higher hertz than regular vocalists. His was one of the most performative voices too, with a natural musicality. Wow, just wow! 😮
I wish we rewarded genuine talent like this today, instead of admiring manufactured and often computer fabricated excuses for ‘music’.

Freddie had a bad throat and was advised not to sing by his doctor. I do believe he downed a couple of vodkas and did it anyway. He said after every note felt like he was swallowing razor blades.
He was just an awesome showman and he's missed very much.

Remember that crowd was there for 16 hours listening to lots of bands. Queen walked in and stole the show

Years before electronic augmentation you were either amazing or you weren't, now other skills can compensate for lack in vocals or instruments.
It gives us a wider range of music today, but it's hard to be awe struck by raw talent now anything amazing is assumed to be electronically patched.
Remember when lip syncing was shameful? Now it's almost the rule because we need it at it's best every time or refunds.

Elton john after queen performed said that this stopped being a fundraiser and became a queen concert. And boy howdy was he right. At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded be the horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of to many terrible memories I have to count, from 34 years of active service, and 2 years hospitalisation.
I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears.

There will never be anyone who can work a crowd like Freddie. He actually sang in an Opera too. The man had maybe the best voice ever and an even bigger stage presence.

This show was Freddie's defining moment. Live Aid absolutely cemented his position in the legendary halls of rock frontmen. Like a Goddamned General commanding an unquestioning army of over a 100 000 people.
Radio Gaga and literally EVERYONE clap clap fist. Goosebumps. He truly commanded an army larger than Russia has now.
The "army " you see in the crowd is nothing. Live Aid was the most viewed event in history with 1.9 billion people tuning in. 40% of the planet was singing and clapping and stomping with Freddie Mercury that day.

Not sure if you knew, Freddie had a bad throat infection and his Dr didn’t want him to perform at all. He was that good with a severe infection. Just a legend.

Everyone always heaps the praise on Freddie, which he deserves, but the whole band needs a shout for keeping up with and predicting him. Live proof that Queen, as a whole, were god tier.

Freddie was not dx with AIDS until 1987, 2 years after Live Aid, although he most likely thought he may have HIV at that time, because he tested for it in 84.

After their 86 tour Freddie realised something serious was wrong,beyond normal fatigue and muscle aches
His test came back negative
He still felt ill and started getting blemishes that turned out to be the start of sarcoma skin cancer which he was diagnosed for in April 87,also diagnosed at that time with Aids

The greatest frontman ever, the incomparable Freddie Mercury. All of the band were talented songwriters and musicians, one of the most highly educated and smart bands ever, Brian May has a Ph.D in Astrophysics, as well as being one of the great rock guitarists....I love Queen. I was 14 years old, and I remember sitting in front of the t.v. all day and night watching this concert. What an amazing event! My daughters were raised on Queen's greatest hits. Sadly I only got to spend a small part of my life with Freddie in it as I was 10 when he sadly passed but I'm thankful for it as I loved listening to Queen and still do.

That crowd is bigger than the regular British army which comes in at 82,000. Their guitarist built the red guitar he played. And the drummer sang the high background vocals. They’re all amazing!!!!
The end is so good. He’s not just singing his songs. He invited the audience to take part in this historical event. The audience became a part of the music. And he walks around the stage enjoying what he created and feel the love they have for him.

I skipped school to stay home and watch this. We were pretty poor, and didn't have the means to buy the newest technology, The VHS. This was the only time my mother never said a thing about my cutting class. ( I .. *cough cough*..was .."sick", and thought I had put on good show) I didn't, and was grounded the minute Live Aid was over. Thank you Mr. Video, for your time and effort.

He had such a presence on stage. He held the audience in the palm of his hand. Such a legend.
The irony of this was that Queen were a last minute inclusion as another act had to drop out. David Bowie was the following act and was heard to comment How Do I Follow That and someone else commented They are stealing the show. A lot of the artists were not used to playing to such large crowds but Queen had been playing to large audiences for some time.

I remember the concert vividly and I think Queen were about the fourth band on. They had had a string of hits but were relatively quiet at that time. Their performance though propelled them into the stratosphere. Freddie was a comet that seared across the sky too briefly. In a way his brilliance and his lifestyle doomed him and at the same time ensured his permanent place in music. What a catalogue of songs Queen have for generations to enjoy.
Freddie has such a huge stage presence. You can almost feel the charisma emanating from him.
No matter how good you are at playing an instrument, no matter if you have the voice of an angel. If you do not have that 'spark', that little something in your personality, that magic in your soul, that gives you that bit extra, you'll never make it big...

My God watching you light up like a Christmas Tree watching this brings such a swell in my heart. I got a gift of Live Killers a live Queen album when I was twelve and have never been the same. I think watching you is how I must have looked the first time listening to that album. THANK YOU, for the recall of such a great memory.
Its really cool to see the younger generations finding and discovering Freddie, Queen, their Live Aid set still sounds so good. I was watching as a teen and remember the rotary dial phones and all the people answering and taking donations on the air. Every time I watch this its a happy time.

Fun fact: Freddie had issues with his throat that night (I believe it was an infection or something) and his doctors told him not to sing or he could permanently damage his voice. Man went on to perform the greatest show of all time.

Yep...... their catalog is immense!, but remember they were together for 20 years! and worked very hard to perfect their sound, all fantastic musicians! and with Freddie... well....Legendary!
Queen prepped for this and you can tell. Each band was allowed “X” amount of time on stage. Queen had it timed to the second. This is evidenced by the strip of lights (green, yellow, red) on stage to signal to the artist(s) how they were on time. If you look from the bands perspective on the floor on the right, when the band plays the last note of the set and Freddie drops his arm, the light turns red. Just perfection.

now you see why we wanted you to see this , you just witnessed the greatest live performance ever , david bowie called freddy a bastard when queen went off the stage because david had to follow that up , this was queen at full tilt there was 70 something thousand people at wembly at the same time there was 100 something thousand watching at a simultaneous concert at Philadelphia and several million more watching live around the world and on top of that they wernt even on the billing list till the last moment because the promoters thought that because queen hadnt released a song in a while at that time the promoters figured they wernt relevant enough for the crowd , so all those people are considered " not a typical queen audience " and they stole the show , thats how much of a big deal this was
I remember watching this when I was 10 on T.V. It was amazing. Even as a kid I knew I was seeing something special. This was a benefit concert and they weren’t getting the donations they were expecting then Queen came on and stole the show with a mash-up of some of their great songs. To this day no one has ever topped Queen. Freddie was the greatest frontman in history the Ay-oh part shows how he could memorize a crowd.
It wasn't long after this concert that we lost Freddie. In my heart I've always believed Freddie knew he wasn't long for this world so with a throat infection and all he came out and left everything he had on that stage giving us the greatest performance of all time!!! He used his last moments of life to give his fans a performance that will last for eternity. R.I.P Freddie we will always love you
This was 1985. Freddie died in 1991. In between, Queen did a huge, legendary concert tour, and Freddie and the band were recording new music and new videos to go with it.

At that time he was fine he had a bit of sore throat but unlike the film tells us, he wasn't infected. I can never understand how Brian and Roger let that be included in BR film. They knew that day what to do and weren't there to promote a new album but played the hits. It was nearly dead then them and Bowie came on, shame they didn't do Under Pressure together, would have been a great crossover.
If you are learning the history of rock then this is a staple of the course. This show is a perfect way to watch a band show it's love for their fans and the entire crowd reciprocating that love. Once you see this, it stays with you. A piece of music history that should not be missed. I'm so happy you have witnessed this. It wasn't to long after this that Freddie was diagnosed and within a few years he did the video These Are The Days Of Our Lives, and it still breaks my heart every time I see it. He loved us as much as we loved him. Quintessential Rock Star. It's an honor to watch this but I can only watch it through glassy tear filled eyes. But in total admiration for the legend he was.

Yes, Freddy had music class when he was in concert. Check out Freddy doing opera with Montrrserat Caballer. Yes Freddy did opera. And the singer was blown away that a rock star understood and loved opera

They started Bohemian Rhapsody because it is strategic for them since they were already considered “an old band” by that time so the best way for the young audience to know and vibe with them is by starting out with their most famous song - which is Bohemian Rhapsody 😅

Can't take my eyes off of Freddy on this one. His performance makes my heart pound and leaves me out of breath. His presence and stage & crowd command is something else. This one outshines everybody else. BTW I am pretty sure they also had to consider which songs to play in Live Aid, a benefit concert. They were gathering money for famine in Africa and I think it would have been utterly tasteless to play Another One Bites the Dust in this context.

Actually, Queen got the same amount of time on stage as every other act did. And that was 20 minutes. It just seemed like Queen made it last longer than 20 minutes because they stole the show. And they were absolutely the best performance at Live-Aid!😃🙏💞😺🍀

The rabbit hole that is Queen is deeper than you could ever imagine, including Hammer to Fall, and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. You need to react to "Keep Yourself Alive" "The Show Must Go On" and "Don't Try Suicide".
Well, Queen was one of the very few to even practice a set. They really thought about what exactly they wanted to do on stage with the given time limit and practiced a couple of days. Most others thought of the event more like Woodstock, get hammered, go on stage and play some stuff. And Queen made sure that their own sound guy sat on the mixer and he just miiiiight have turned the max volume up a liiiiiittle bit 😁 this performance is one of those music history moments, like Jackson's first moonwalk, Woodstock etc, that'll be talked about for decades to come, like we still do with Beethoven, Mozart and the likes.
Had I ever had the chance to see Freddie Mercury perform, I suspect it's the closest I'd ever come to a religious experience. I'm not sure there's ever been a greater performer.

Freddie had laryngitis that day and was advised by his doctor not to sing. He refused to disappoint his fans. That's why we don't hear him hitting any really high notes. What a performer!

watching queen concerts is one of the greatest ways to discover their songs, because of the extra adrenaline the live brings to them. Like, my first queen experience was the montreal show and I just felt it so hard, that show version of "Keep yourself alive" was the first queen song that made me think: OK I'M HOOKED 😈😈😈

I came from NYC to see Freddie n Roger n Brian and Queen at Live Aid I was 17. I cannot tell you what it was like but Amazing to have been there. I had seen Queen on their first US Tour at MSG in NYC and in also in Canada. That was the best show I have ever seen in my life, and I have seen Some of the best musician ever, this was hands down the best I have ever seen live in my life. RIP Freddie

So true to the saying! A true talent. A human born of purity in regards to music! Something of which was so fluent to the man, Freddie himself. A man whom we should all honour, within the music industry. Regardless of which genre you support primarily. This man paved the way, and not only that. But set many a standard for those involved in music and set the bar for many a like. We should not only appriciate the music made by this band but value it's content and meaning thoroughly... so with that, along with Mr. Video... smoke a fat one and listen to the legendary content provided by this man and the band Queen along side him.
