    How to Grow Peonies
Peonies grow from zones 3 to 8; I successfully grow them in zone 3 here in Alberta, Canada. My experience is with herbaceous peonies (the bushier, no-tree kind!), and they love full sun. Mine are on the South side of my house in full sun and they grow well there. You can find lots of peony plants at most gardening centers, and places like Walmart and Home Depot. Plant them in late Spring, and make sure you follow the directions that come with your plant to ensure you plant them at the right depth and distance apart. Just a little warning: It does take quite a while for peony plants to mature and produce giant, luscious blooms - mine took about 4 years. However, after they mature, you can enjoy your peonies for many, many years to come! The varieties I have and love are Alexander Fleming (full and bright pink) and Sarah Bernhardt (full and blush pink). For my more mature, larger plants I like to put a ring with stakes around the plant in early spring so that when the plant is large with heavy blossoms it doesn't droop.
How to Store Peonies to Bloom Later
Peonies only bloom for a couple of weeks here in late June, but one way to prolong them is by picking them at just the right time and storing them in the refrigerator. Wait until your peony bud has all its colour and is squishy to the touch, like a marshmallow. Then, cut the stem, remove all of the leaves, and wrap it gently in some plastic cling wrap. Store it horizontally in your fridge for a few weeks, and then pull it out later, place it in a vase with water, and watch its petals unfurl.
How to Get Ants Off Peonies
The best way to keep ants off of peonies you want to cut and use inside is to pick them at this same "marshmallow" bud stage and let them open up in a vase with water inside. The ants actually eat the nectar off of the peony buds to help them open, so it's important not to pick them too early if you want the petals to unfurl inside.
Another method to remove ants is to pick your peonies at their fully opened stage and then simply hang them upside down and give them a good shake. Flick any extra bugs off of the petals before bringing inside, or soak the flowers in a bucket of water outside to remove any more ants.

Peonies are my favorite flower, they were always in my grandma's flower beds in Indiana. I live in an apartment and can't grow these, but hopefully one day I'll have my own place again and can enjoy these. If I ever marry again, these will be in my wedding.

So i just finished your tutorial and should have known you'd know all about the ants...but, like i said the depth of the planting of a new peony should be planted close to the surface and when i was learning about them the proper planting depth made a huge difference in how mine bloomed compared to prior years!! Thnx for your tips too!!

We moved into our first house in December so I was so thrilled when I saw that there was a peony plant in our back garden in the spring! 😍 I definitely want to plant more next year in different colours because they are just so beautiful!

I should have googled it but when I saw your vid of ridding your peonies of ants i just reacted...I'm a serious gardener and learned most from my mom. According to her, ants on peonies are absolutely a necessary part of the blooming of the peony. Not sure what part they play but, will google when I'm done this post but ants are a guarentee that your peonies will bloom! Peonies also need to be planted close to the surface of a garden which i have found to be absolutely the truth after experiencing planting them to deep! That one change made all the difference in the world. It may be a different situation in Canada but i think what I've learned will hold true! Don't kill the ants in this particular situation!!🤗

I had to transplant my peonie 3 years ago and they haven't bloomed since. I'm hoping this will be the year because the plant looks healthy when it emerges. I love your videos because I live in Edmonton so understand the challenges of growing in a cold climate.

Oh my! What great timing! I live in zone 3 ( your neighbour) Saskatchewan and have a Sarah Bernhardt that just started blooming nicely last year. I wanted to cut them for the house but I freaked when I saw the amount of ants on them. This year, I picked them for my backyard but I was going to google on how to get rid of the ants so I can have them indoors. Thank you so much for all the info!

I love Peonies, they bring back wonderful memories of my Great Grandparent farm in rural Ohio. Mine fall over from the weight and the blooms are touching the ground in an arch. I’ve tried using the wire mesh for my tomatoes when the peonies are small but don’t enjoy the aesthetic of the wire. What am I doing wrong? Thanks so much 🌸🌸🌸

I love peonies, they were one of my mom's favorite flowers, I have a bush, but I think that I might have to find a different location for it, it hasn't bloomed since my parents passed away, and that was 20 years ago, it's healthy, and I'm still trying to figure out why it hasn't been blooming. Thank you for all of your tips, they were great, now to try and figure out why it doesn't bloom.

Thanks for this! I'm a lavender farmer in western Montana. My 3 dozen peonies in their 3rd year all bloomed this spring! They are as fun as lavender! I am surprised how many florists do not know this storing trick! I am on a mission to teach them - so they'll make better use of my flowers! I will be sharing this video with them. And I dunk my peonies in the creek to remove the ants! Thanks for your video!

i know this is an old video, but I just wanted to say that the ants have NOTHING to do with the flowers opening. They won't hurt the plants, but they don't assist them either.

Mine would suck the buds completely dry and I would have no flowers opening up. I've been fighting them off this year and may finally get some blooms. They destroyed my buds 3 years in a row. Last year I was only able to salvage one. This year I should get 5 or 6 if I'm lucky

How long can they be stored in the fridge for? Is there a limit. And is there anyway to save them to have fresh flowers throughout the whole year...... so when the season is over you have some stores for your house to put in cases. I didnt know if that was possible. I am new to Peonies and still learning. But I am excited for next Spring and hoping for some beautiful flowers.

Hi can you please give me advice. I planted a peony tuber in March. It started to grow a bud 2 months ago, but last month I noticed there were some white powdery stuff in between the stems. I googled it and it says it might be powdery mildew or mealy bugs. So I mixed some water, alcohol, and liquid dish soap and sprayed it to the peonies. So I noticed that one bud turned almost black or brown.. I'm thinking that it burned from the alcohol. Ugh :( .. what should I do? Should I cut the whole stem/ prune it or remove that whole plant? Is there hope for the that plant to grow a new bud? Please advice. Are you on facebook so I can show you the flower?

Wow! So beautiful!! I’m from central Texas so I’m sure I could never successfully grow peonies outside like this. 😪 I have been seeing them at my grocery store lately though. Might have to pick some up now! Thanks for the video!

I really want to start a garden but we live in SoCal and it can get really hot in the summer. I’ve been trying to grow lavender but since it’s very hot right now the lavender dried out.
