- In this video I demonstrate how to play Good Enough by Van Halen. I cover all the cool licks and fills as well as the guitar solo. This is the opening track off of the Van Halen album 5150 and it is absolutely brilliant. Eddie was on fire and totally inspired with the onset of Van Hagar joining the band. Truly magical years. Eddie was just a freaking mad scientist not only with his leads but his rhythm playing. I don't know how he came up with this stuff but good lord was he creative. Thanks for sharing

They recently released the 1984 movie "The Wild life" with Chris Penn on DVD after years of legal music licensing issues. Anyways the score was done by Eddie and alot of the incidental music was Eddie just noodling around on some riffs aka Good Enough & Right Now (Pre 5150 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge). Pretty Cool to hear these in a raw format. Thought I would share.

I was 15. This was, really, my introduction to Van Halen. I had seen Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher on TV, and heard I'll Wait on the radio, but this was the first Van Halen album I purchased.
It changed my life as well.

I was 15 - to turn 16 6 or 7 months later. Game changer for me - on day 1. I popped it into the cassette player on my big room stereo.... and honestly.... everything was different. Van Halen changed my Life. Twice.

Still remember hearing the new Van Halen when my brother bought the 5150 cassette when it was released and hearing “Hello Baby….” Goosebumps Still one of my Van Hagar songs!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Question.... on your landing page, it looks like you have to Marshall plexi settings, is that correct, and is that what you use for the Van Halen brown sound ?

You play it correctly at 4:28.or so. I think he bounces between the D and C. Timing is a bit tricky on that opening riff. Tone sounds great man!

Pretty easy to figure out since it was a go to eddie lick he did a lot during the hagar era
There’s a signature ed lick you’re leaving out of this that he does before he starts messing around in the a minor pentatonic box at the 17th fret.
Slide into the f# at the 16th fret d string then grab the A note on the 14th fret g string and then grab the b string at the 17th fret and bend it a minir 3rd (one whole step and a half, e to g) and then grab the b string at the 20th fret and bend that a whole step.

17:15 lol yea ed didnt know how to play over those chords, he’s not exactly using a scale that works with that f chord. There’s a f# he hits in one lick of his solo that definitely clashes with the underlying tonality.
Its funny when you watch satriani solo on this song on the current hagar tour joe knows exactly what will work

Yeh. This one's hard to replicate. That low A bass string Eddie uses on the record is one reason. The guitars on 5150 had a sizzle to them as well. It intrigues me to this day!! 😎☮️
