    Hi Mary thanks! I just added pastels to my toolbox and have been using colored pencils. I bought the exact wheel you are using off Amazon for $7 or so and I can see how it will help with blending and mixing in either medium. Hi Mary,
    I have ordered a wheel. While waiting for it to arrive I have two questions..If I want a certain color, say salmon pink, can the wheel tell me what doses of the three primary colurs to use. Another question: why not just mix the primary colors in the right proportions to get any color instead of buying lots of individual color tubes ? Am I correct in saying that three tubes for the primary colors plus white plus black making 5 is really all I need. I intend to adopt acrylic.
    Thank you for your help.

    • @gossamerwings3632
      @gossamerwings3632 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After i saw this video, i saw another video called Color Wheel Tutorial - How To Mix Paint. That one shows how to use the primary colours to get a lot of other colours and is good for beginners who don't want to spend a lot of money on too many paints, but after you're an intermediate, you could buy the other colours or if you're going to do a lot of painting.

    • @marymedrano9608
      @marymedrano9608 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To answer your first question, the color wheel will get you close to your salmon color. It does not tell you what proportion of colors to mix to get salmon. When you begin mixing with say, red, yellow and white you will be close. From that point, you need to make informed decisions based on the color you see.
      Part of the fun of mixing colors is the nearly infinite variety of colors one can make. There are not nearly that many colors in tubes at the art store.
      A good beginning for paint mixing is the three primaries plus black and white, as you say. If you want a whole bunch more variety buy a warm and cool of each primary plus black and white. You can paint for a lifetime with just these 8 colors.
      Buying other colors in tubes is not only fun, but they often cannot be mixed using primaries.
      Hope this helps.

    Brown. Where is brown on the wheel? Ive seen this colour wheel in several videos but brown is always lacking. I know its made from mixing green with red, but would like to se the actual color presented on a wheel to see its relation to all other colours. Is there another wheel were brown is actually present?

    • @marymedrano9608
      @marymedrano9608 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will see some browns on the wheel, i.e. a yellow and violet mix and in the red family. You might want to get a book on mixing colors, then you will be able to make any brown you'd like and see what looks good with that particular brown. Hope this helps.

      I think it's best to have the color wheel in hand while choosing colors whether it's paint or fabric or nail polish. You can then choose whether to go the analogous route or complementary or split complementary, etc. Good luck!

    nice explanation. Im pouring paint. Do i want to layer my colors in my cup in a complimentary order? So yellow, then violet, then red, then green for example

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it really matters because I've heard plenty of artists talk about their paint order and they are "all over the map". What I've always heard is that whatever order you choose you should stick with it. Personally, I lay mine out left to right: white, yellows, reds, blues, burnt umber, black (optional)

      @@marymedranogallery i know about all over the map! its hard to pick a method when there are so many!

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimdimitrios1 Don't stress about it. Just pick one and stick with it. There is nothing magical about my system or anyone's system for laying out paint. It's for convenience and familiarity. When you're painting you don't want to think about where a particular color is. You just want to be able to put your brush in it without thinking too much. Good luck!

    Yes thank you does the color wheel show what not to mix to make mud?

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha. Well, generally mud (which can be beautiful) is made by mixing several colors together. It's why teachers often tell their students to keep their palette simple. So, although the color wheel does not show what not to mix to make mud you can now avoid making mud by keeping your mixes simple, meaning two colors for starters. Once you can mix those without creating mud try adding a third color in small doses. That's the key!

      I've had one for years and never used it either. But i was at an art supply store and decided to buy the same colour wheel as i thought it would help me, but i still couldn't understand head nor tails either!!! Since i just bought it not long ago i'm going to return it as it's not that cheap, i could spend the $10. + taxes towards the purchase of a paint or brush, can never have enough with acrylic as it dries so quickly compared to watercolour pans.

    Mary, is red the darkest primary color? Is red violet the 1st darkest color in the color wheel? I have took art class before and I learned that violet is the darkest secondary color but is red the darkest primary color? Is red violet the darkest tertiary color?

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's subjective but I would say it's a toss up between red and blue on which can be considered darkest. I think blue would make the darkest value over red of the primaries. Since there are so many variations of paint colors, this is some that would be fun to experiment with.

    I am leather finisher. sometimes the colour I make comes quite wrong and I just need to know what colour is to be added as a composite colour or if I come wrong in a colour wheel then which colour can give me the right direction to get my actual tone.

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On one side of the color wheel there is a way to move the wheel to show what will happen to a color when you add another color. If you have the wheel in front of you, you will see what I am talking about. I hope you can get your hands on one. Hopefully this helps.

    • @marymedranogallery
      @marymedranogallery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will come with practice. Keep mixing and trying different solutions before you work on large areas. Good luck!
