Doamino41 nope! I like having the option of marrying my girlfriend without persecution or death. You have no clue what you’d give up in life if you went to the 80’s. Sincerely, the daughter of an 80’s teen who told it real.

I can understand that you can't really relate to the 80's because you are the "daughter of an 80s teen". You are from a different generation. You didn't grow up in that era and lesbianism wasn't accepted much back then.
But movies were better, TV was better, music was better and America was better. If I had a chance to go back to the 80s I would see my family again. Now they are all gone.
For most of us the 80s were a very special time.

When I went to school, there were no computers, no internet, no cell phones and no cable tv. Life was so much better back then. Also, if you wanted a job, you went to the company and asked to see the hiring manager. Half the time, you got the job and you started working within the same week. Makes you think, just for a brief moment at least, that we arent as advanced as we claim to be in the year 2020.

And it was easy to get a good job, benefits, health and life insurance, retirement accounts, even good dental.......................my parents could afford on two jobs to own a large home in a big city and land and a small house in a nearby state to use for holidays and eventually to retire to...........each had a new car every three to five years............not just push credit but actually buy a car trading in their old one and then making payments for 12 months or less and it was paid off...............i started working an official job just as the unions were being broken up and reagen became president..............i have worked either full time plus at one job or two to three jobs.................i rent, i owned a home but a shit partner and a costly divorce took that.....i have been in debt and all it took was two family members decades apart having cancer and all that entails.............broke.............as in i get the 'sign up with us for your new credit card" and when i call they look at the medical bills left to me(yeah, like a horrible inheritance...no i was not married to either....and yet they hunted me down for decades.........vultures)...........they of course had no insurance and the bills were astronomical............think $5000 per bag of whatever they got three times a week, and oncology doctor charges $3000 plus per visit...........and even though i worked two jobs while caring for the first one i still went in debt up to my eyeballs paying just the minimum thousands and thousands of dollars a month. The last patients bills were over $1.7 million dollars and they still died............horribly..............yep they will charge you that much to poison you or a loved one and still let them die...............when the crap insurance i had decided they wouldn't pay anymore the docs pretty much told us to take cancer patient home and wait for them to die........................that is todays america

These movies, Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, are all iconic and helped mold me into who I am today! I was born in the 80's and didnt realize just how amazing of a decade it really was to be alive in. Not until now, in 2020, when we have no freedoms and high schools are ghost towns around here, there will never be a saturday detention handed out again. No more running through the halls to escape being caught while skipping class. Kind of heartbreaking and this song is a bittersweet reminder for us all to never forget who we truly are and where we started. 2019 wasnt all that bad after all eh?

    • @glenrosarian2352

You are right. Detention may be a thing of the past now. Even as early as 2001 I taught at a high school in SE Houston, and we had no Detention, although I think we could have used it. Kids were getting away with almost anything.

Ah, the 80's...The music, the movies; no one's ever really been able to put their finger on it, but that decade had something that no other has been able to capture, or ever will. Yeah, kids laugh at us who grew up back then( maybe that time wasn't "dope" or "sick" enough for them), but for us children of the 80's, it represents a period when everything just meshed together perfectly, a time that had never existed before and sadly, may never exist again, but as long as that decade is remembered and we play the music and screen the movies for our kids, grandkids, etc., it will never die!!

"The Breakfast Club" is timeless because it captures so well the pain and angst and uncertainty and struggles of this period of life-and especially how hard it is to deal with the damage and trauma lousy parents create in young minds and hearts. The young actors are perfect and hit it out of the park-and the writing and directing by John Hughes are fantastic. Oh, and the song perfectly catches the soul of the movie and the times.

The themes of teenage life in the 80s are the same as they are today. The world has changed. Technology has changed how kids see the world, but the world still sees kids the same way as it did 30 years ago. That's why this film will always been relevant and timeless. It captures teenage life better than any film before and since.

Ozzie Welte We we’re lucky. I turned 13 in 1980! Right place, right time. It wasn’t all Roses, but it beat the hell out of today. We knew how to live and weren’t told what to say and think. I feel sorry for today’s generation, they can’t see how skewed life has become..they gotta live in the real world, not a virtual one. Remember talking to people face to face? Ah well, maybe it’s gonna be our job to teach them some good old fashioned life skills. We’re selling them short if we don’t.

I am from the Breakfast Club generation. I think the 1980's were the best time to be in high school. Just enough technology to make things interesting but not so much that our lives revolved around it. Great theme song, great music in general.
Teens today should be required to watch this movie to see what we did for fun back then. Btw I love the role Ally Sheedy played.

Hello, I myself am almost 36, and while I don't have too many good memories of school, I do find myself pondering the future very frequently. To go from somebody unaware of the inevitable future, to one who thinks 'they' will have cured death in time for me aging, to one almost feeling guilt regarding having children and what they will have to experience in the future is a difficult experience. I find myself looking back on those memories that are so deeply embedded in my brain from my youth with a feeling of despair, not because I don't want to think about them but because they remind me of the passage of time, and the fundamental realisation that there will come a day when Senarphis isn't around to watch the news any more, and learn about the latest technological invention or world tragedy taking place. Sorry... that just popped out

@PersonalityDeficit87 That line highlights Linklaters view of adolescence and adulthood as painful outcomes of ditching the magic and mystery of childhood. That's why Linklater took ten years to make his overtly nostalgic magnum opus "Boyhood." He was a tool in high school and can't relate to the ivy league educated, country club mentality of John Hughes.
I disagree with Linklater's assessment of adolescents. I think he's still a tool and his view emotionally immature, but his vision is unique and he does complete a task, I give him that.

This song is so absolutely amazing, and always ruined when someone tries to redo it. I also loved this movie so much, and I know if they remade it today, it would be terrible! because all they'd focus on of course in the era of stupidity that is today, is race, gender, and sexuality.. I'm black, and didn't need to see a black person to relate to any of the characters (which was the nerd for me, but I was also super artsy, and painfully shy.).. It was the so-called cliques they were into, which made me relate. It's all about character, which people seem to not get today.
This movie was one of the things, that made me open myself up a bit more, and in high school, I made friends with other kids I normally would not have hung out with.

Being white I appreciate your perspective and comment. Movies are great based on their own merits and the beholder. All hidden messages aside, timing is everything. This movie was perfect timing, kind of like Rocky and a bunch of others. Representation of race, gender, and sexuality is completely subject to relevance and timing - for instance I loved "Lean on Me" because Morgan Freeman was great and it was primarily a black cast. I hated "Traffic" because I am predisposed against drug movies, when the problem politically is prohibition never works and primarily discriminates against minorities (people of color) based on convictions, incarceration rates and length of sentencing.

The 80's were, bar none, the best modern decade. The music. The movies. Everything came together. Songs like this from the huge hit, The Breakfast Club, were off the charts sensational. Today, it is largely boring. I cannot see young people looking back on the 2000's and saying, gee that was an awesome decade. They wouldn't know the difference. Music groups in the 80's, like Duran Duran were light years ahead of the crap I see today. Just look at the recent MTV awards show. It wasn't about the music. Oh there some okay music out there alright, but along side the 80's.......forget it. Today, it is all about vulgarity and promiscuity. No art. No feel. Just pure unadulterated bs. 🗼

+Erika Krausmann Today is the 2010s, not the 2000s. Every generation says the same thing, Erika. I was born in 1995 and I know I was born in the wrong time:( But, I look at the late 90s/early 2000s as the main era of my childhood. Besides 9/11 and all that political stuff happening, the kids shows back then were pretty amazing. The early-mid 2000s (up until 04/05) had the 90s feel still, culturally. Every one I know in my generation grew up with 90s movies and remember VHS. I do agree with you though about today's music/music videos. I can't stand it. Who thinks it's a good idea to be that sexual/vulgar for the kids to see? I don't get it.

+William Webber But she's talking about the mainstream scene...Mainstream today is utter crap, though there is still good music, it's just underground and on indie labels. But the mainstream scene of any generation helps define the general feeling of that generation....which doesn't really say much about the late 90s/ early 00s.

    Don't You (Forget About Me)
    Simple Minds
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Ooh woh
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
    Don't you, forget about me
    Don't, don't, don't, don't
    Don't you, forget about me
    Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
    Down, down, down
    Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
    Down, down, down, down
    Hey, hey, hey, hey
    Ooh woh
    Don't you try and pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
    Vanity and security
    Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
    Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby
    Don't you, forget about me
    Don't, don't, don't, don't
    Don't you, forget about me
    As you walk on by
    Will you call my name?
    As you walk on by
    Will you call my name?
    When you walk away
    Or will you walk away?
    Will you walk on by?
    Come on, call my name
    Will you call my name?
    I say
(Lala la la lala la la)
    Will you call my name?

The mall was an all day experience, we would shop for clothes, go to the record stores, hang out at Taco Grande, go the arcade and play battle zone and tempest, go see a film like Fast Times at Ridgemont high, and E.T., go shop some more and go home broke and do it again next payday!

I grew up at the crossroads of the 80's and 90's as I was born in 1980. Remember all the great 80s music and slowness of life. Many things are better today but many things are worse. When people think back to those old days it is often their childhood and the simplicity of being a child. It was however great growing up without a fucking cellphone in your pocket. Life was slower. It is that which people miss.

I got an old rotary wall phone and put it on the wall in my game room. Nice to hear the real mechanical bell ring. Funny to watch younger people try and use it. Amazed a rotary pulse phone is still compatable on the tone system.

I wish I was born in the 70's. It'd be cool to be a teen in the 80's.

I was and it was, even though I hated school. The decade, however, was full of energy and potential that is missing these days.

***** Yeah, weren't the Marvel comics an TV shows all about heroics and patriotism, saving the world, saving others, standing up for something bigger than yourself, life lessons? I was born in the 90's but my parents, who were married and very young when they had me, raised me with a lot of 70's and 80's stuff that they grew up with, and I was pretty secluded from the mainstream "counterculture" until 2008-ish. Everything now in the media and TV is about apocalypse and an "I wanted it all, I have it all, now what" disappointed, chasing-highs attitude. Back in my day, you could preach religion, wisdom, morals, parenting, and how to act right, but now... you'll get labeled a fanatic, bigot, outdated, show off, oppressive freak. Ugh. I'm going to raise my kids so they can spread some of that old energy and potential lacking today.

It was not the same then as today. I know that for a fact because I lived through all of it! Yes, the adults said what you did, but that doesn't take away from the very different attitudes, behaviors, and hopes and dreams. Now if you said that the 70s were like today then I can grudgingly agree with you because I lived through most of them too. The 80s, however, was awesome! The early to mid 90s were ok, but something happened along the way that killed the fun and color that existed for the decade and a half.

Man, I was born in '78, so I wasn't old enough to experience the 80's, but I find that at 42, I am always coming back to the music from this time period...really wish I could've been born earlier...it just seemed like a really fun era. The clubs, the music, everything.

The 80s will never die....I was born in 1970... so 4 me ...every yr from 1980..I was 10.. I grew up and was cultivated by everything that came out..but music is what shaped me ..and I learned who I identified with... music was our social media.. and its so awesome how singers born in the 80s ...have brought their version of our music 2 present day...this song will b played at my funeral when that day comes... I will "record" myself singing it now ..at 50🤣😂💕I was exactly 15 when this movie came out. I am part Princess and Rebel🤣💕
