  • Our Porta-bote was purchased for 250 bucks in very used condition. It had a tear in the transom sheet of heavy plastic at the fold. First we tried plastic welding, which was not satisfactory. We had left over aluminum-bitumen tape from another project and did this repair. We used a heatgun to help smush the bitumen around and make very good seals. So far so good.

    I have a 16 year old 24ft gen 3 porta bote. I had a small crack leak in the back of the boat at the centre fold seam after 14 plus years of use in cold weather. Brillant boat. I plastic welded it and it's been fine ever since. I used universal plastic welding rods and a welding gun off eBay. The porta bote plastic is very easy to work with, to plastic weld and if I could have gotten a piece of the porta bote it would have been very easy to do the weld rods works very well but the original plastic is so easy to work with when welding if you can get some from the manufacturer it would make a much better job of any repair. This tape idea also works well. How is long did it last over months?

    I heard they fixed these issues early 2000s. Hopefully that’s true. Do you know what year this is?

    Did u take the rivets off and taped it?

    • @rona9533
      @rona9533  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes. Only the rivets closes to the fold though. Taped it up, warmed it up with the heat gun and then re-riveted the black plastic pieces.

    where you able to fold up your boat after doing this repair and if so how long has it been holding up after how many foldings?

      It's been folded and refolded about 4 times this year and is doing just fine.

    I had the same leak spot on my portabote - I cleaned the area really well with some acetone and injected some 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 (05203) into the problem area. Been 3 years and still holding up although I DON'T fold it up anymore.

    This is exactly what I need to repair a leak in the seam of my porta bote. Did you apply the tape first and then use the heat gun on the tape? or did you heat up the boat (polypropylene) and then apply the tape? A little clarification would be helpful, thank you!

      At the time I didn't think about making a repair video-- I wish I had!! I applied the tape first, then used the heat gun. The tape doesn't take much heat to get nice and tacky.

      Couple questions for ya.
      have you had a chance to put the boat in the water?
      If so was it folded during transport?

    On my old porta boat... I wide used gorilla tape on all the seams. Maybe $20 worth of tape, but it never peeled up and it stopped my little leak
