    Your video bailed me out in the middle of the recent blizzard in Buffalo. Had no heat on Christmas morning. There was a driving ban in place and it would have been days before a service technician could arrive. I followed your instructions and the heat was restored.
    Thanks for your video.

    My furnace has 2 sensors. I cleaned mine a few years ago when my heater wouldn't stay on for longer than a minutes. It ran nearly non-stop during the Valentine week deep freeze here in Central Texas. I was lucky, I had electricity, water and gas. No outages at all for me. Some friends of mine locally weren't as lucky and some didn't have power or water for about a week.

      sad thing is nearly everything is easy if you know how to do it. I am here because my flame sensor is weak according to the blinking light. furnace still runs fine but the air seems cooler than normal. still pretty warm though for now.

    By "make sure your power is off" do you just mean the switch on the furnace is off? Or should you shut off the power from the fuse box as well?

    I'm wondering if a solvent such as a throttle body cleaner would be safe to use on the flame sensor. Apparently not. Any comments?

    • @TECTubefilms
      @TECTubefilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manufacturers of flame sensors only recommend steel wool or metal knife for cleaning. We have never seen any that recommend a cleaner. We are not familiar with "throttle body cleaner." What specific type of debris is it used to clean off of the throttle?

    • @spencerhansen8374
      @spencerhansen8374 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the carbon scoring or other intake debris that gunk's up the intake/carburetor. Mass air flow sensor cleaner is another spray that cleans an electric sensor and evaporates completely.

    I have a Goodman furnace and its doing the same thing, the flame comes on for a second but then turns right off. I want to try cleaning the flame sensor but I was having trouble locating it. I think I found it now but its in a really tight space that does not leave any room for a screwdriver to get through. What is the best way to unscrew that? What sort of tool should I use?

      Sandpaper is not recommended. It leaves debris. Use steelwool and or knife.

    Sir my flame sensor keeps on getting deposits on it, I've cleaned it twice this month already, should I replace it now? Thanks

    • @TECTubefilms
      @TECTubefilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Why is it getting dirty so quickly? Putting a new sensor in is not going to change how much dirt is getting to the sensor. There are likely only a couple reasons you would have to clean it that frequently:
      1) You have an abnormal amount of dust and carbon in your combustion air that is making it dirty quickly. If it is a 90% furnace, make sure the combustion air is coming from outdoors and that the intake pipe is not near any pollutant sources. If it is an 80% furnace, it has to steal air from inside the building so if you installed it in a dirty basement, that could be an issue. Or in a attic with loose insulation material. Or... and hopefully you don't have this... it is installed in your garage. Or if there is a natural draft water heater right next to it and the room/home is tight, it could be causing that appliance to backdraft and the debris is coming from there (that is a long shot theory, though).
      2) The other possibility is that you are not cleaning it well enough. Maybe you are cleaning it enough for it to work for a couple weeks but not well enough for it to work for a year or more. I am not judging your abilities, just point out possible causes.

      @@TECTubefilms Thank you for that very informative reply sir, I will try to check everything you mentioned in number 1. I cleaned it with scotch brite using the rough side (geen portion) maybe I need to rub it more as I am so afraid to put more pressure thinking that I might damage the sensor rod.

    • @germanshepherd13
      @germanshepherd13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @nickastbury172

    You never clean with anything abrasive. There is a coating from the factory you will remove. Once the coating is gone it will rust then you will be replacing it. Wipe it off with a paper towel works just fine. If it gives you more trouble replace it

    With both PVC pipes, It won't need to be cleaned for over 20 years. None of those 59 series furnaces are old enough to need it cleaned yet, operating with a combustion air pipe.
    He should have showed the reality of trying to get it out from behind the combustion air pipe on the older 58 series! LOL!!

    • @TECTubefilms
      @TECTubefilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cleaning on the room airside of the heat exchanger would be the same. Cleaning on the combustion air side of the HX would depend on what is in your outdoor air (pollen, cottonwood, etc) and what is in your indoor air.
