    Just getting into the Ring home security. Started with the doorbell, now a couple of lights. This was an informative video and gave us some good ideas for future Ring uses around our house. Thanks for making this video available!

    I have the cameras. I just needed more lighting. So, being able to have the flood lights integrated with the cameras is all I needed. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you for the PIR info. This explains why I sometimes miss the triggers on my battery cams. I will look into adding lights and the bridge. I just checked. Videos recorded today, my battery spotlight cams are 720, my wired floodlight cams are at 1080.

    Great video and break down regarding having the senor also. Going to get the Ring Smart Lighting - Floodlight, Battery-Powered, Outdoor Motion-Sensor Security Light, White (Starter Kit) and now get the ring senor also for better activation for the Flood Light.

    Stay tuned for next weeks video where LifeHackster removes all of his existing lights and just replaces them with stadium lighting. Then when anyone gets within 50 yards of his house the whole place lights up like an nfl stadium :)

  • @ericandmeag

    I commented on your other post, but yes I also noticed that issue with the cameras. I have a huge tree in front of my yard and noticed in recordings that the leaves aren't as "crisp" anymore. So I compared the recording to others and noticed my resolution dropped on March 30th as well. I thought it was a bandwidth issue, but after lot's of testing, determined it was not my bandwidth.

    Excellent video as usual, my man. Don't know if you someone has commented on this yet, but I think your lower resolution issue may very well be due to your internet speed. I have 300 down and 20 up. Just checked all of mine and they're all recording in 1080p.

    Hi LifeHackster, as per your suggestion, I checked the resolution on my front & rear floodlight cams, and sure enough, boths videos are 720p!! Then I received a software update request, so performed it, then made new videos on both cams. Both cams are now recording in 1080p now

    • @originaldishdoc
      @originaldishdoc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      .... I just wanted to add, you guys over the pond get soooo much more from Ring than us here in the UK, we can't even link cams to both record when motion is detected on one or the other! No Alarm & no smart lighting either .....

  • @ryansharp4244
    @ryansharp4244 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I am having the same issue with the resolution. I only have one Ring product which is the Doorbell Pro. I went back and checked footage from this week and find some videos are 720p and others are 1080p. It seems to vary from video to video. At first I thought it could be when it records in night vision mode vs. daytime mode, but found that did not matter.

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same thing with me... mostly mine are 720p and I kinda narrowed it down to March 27-28th when it started doing it.

    • @ryansharp4244
      @ryansharp4244 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure when this resolution issue started for me. Your video brought this to my attention. I only looked at this past weeks recordings. I would venture a guess the issue goes back further for me. Probably back to the timeframe you are seeing. Wondering if it’s because of a firmware update. Possibly because of signal strength? I enjoy your videos!

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am assuming Ring made an update around end of March and adding a command to lower resolution if upload speed is slow.. but my issue is that first before March, all my recordings were 1080p and second, they are advertising their cameras as 1080p and only needs 2MBPS of upload speed...which my network can certainly handle and then some...

    • @ryansharp4244
      @ryansharp4244 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Confirming that the resolution issue for me does go back to the end of March. I tried to go back further but that’s as far back as cloud storage would go. Through March, April and May my videos vary randomly between 1080 and 720.

    Regarding the video recording below 1080... A friend of mine said he called Ring about it and they told him they downgrade the video quality based on connection quality. He told them he had a fast internet connection that he is confident with and asked them to set it to always be 1080p and they did that for him. Hope that helps.

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really think to at that time that it is firmware update that did it and they reverted my account when I posted the video..anyways, all my ring cameras now record back in 1080p.

      Lifehackster ...I like Seamus would appreciate an answer if you have it. The floodlight false notifications during the daytime (clouds sunlight birds or whatever?) are terrible. I would not buy another one of these Ring Floodlights. I've set it to the lowest sensitivity and even built an "awning" to try and shield from the sun and point the sensor to various positions. I've had mine for about a year and am about to trash it.

Not worth spending time trying to get this crap to connect, we tried for hours moved to different location in the house even though it said to plug in the same room as the router, tried ever plug in the room it just would not connect. edit- mine was at 1080p but then as of a couple hours ago floodlight dropped to 720 while ring pro still 1080.
    i had the issue where my floodlight was rarely recording at 1080p or even 720; it was often at 480 or sometimes as low as 360. after trying multiple things (new mesh wifi, replacement camera, moving router) it turned out it was a now unused coax splitter on the line going to the modem. after wiring the modem directly to where it comes in from the street all has been good. ring said they were seeing packet loss which was causing the issue. oddly enough though my doorbell pro was always 1080p and never had the issue. possibly because the 5ghz wifi vs the 2.4?

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably. 5GHz is a strong and faster channel but has a short range. It is from an update of Ring which make it record in lower resolution if it detects decrease WiFi signal... I’m assuming to decrease incidence of ring of death, choppy and freezing videos. I’ll verify this and see if it is from their end.

    • @CardiffGiant
      @CardiffGiant 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LifeHackster hi yes i think you are right i think they have an over aggressive firmware that degrades video quality to preserve smoothness. i did contact support tonight and they confirmed my floodlight had been set to auto and they switched it to 1080p and now all is good. i applied a firmware update for my router earlier this week which caused a reboot and i think the floodlight cam may have incorrectly assumed that was a connection issue and downgraded the quality. will let you know if it stays in 1080p over the next few days.

    Can the smart floodlight be mounted to a ceiling? I would like to get a floodlight mainly to help my floodlight camera pick up motion turn on and notify me before the people get to my actual floodlight camera. I know of the smaller spotlights but I’m looking for something wired and also like the bigger/more lights in the floodlight VS the spot light. I currently have a ceiling mounted light that I could replace with the floodlight that’s why I’m asking. Maybe throw it in one of your video it possible thanks!

My issue is I like my backyard lit at night. I just got off the phone with a ring person who states I can NOT have the floodlight come on at night, or switch the light on at night to remain on. This device will not record or send alarm any other way other then remaining dormant till motion is detected. Any input?

      I called their customer rep which she said that she is seeing packet loss in my recordings. Both my doorbell cam and floodlight cam have motion events stored as 1080p. Not sure it is any better than 720p given the not so great sensor + terrible compression, but it is 1080. As others have speculated, it may be more about your 2.4ghz wifi being tapped than Ring being sketchy.

    Great review!!! Seeing same issue with motion detections on my ring spotlight during the day but only on the one in direct sunlight. The 2nd one under our carport with no direct light has no issues that I’ve seen yet.
    I’ll have to check the video quality. Great find there!!!
    Do you know or heard if Ring ever plans to ever allow live streaming directly from cameras to like a Ring Show? The major issue I’m fighting is limited internet bandwidth upload speeds in my area!

    • @RustyYates27
      @RustyYates27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @11 11 Sorry. I meant the Echo Show. For one if they would allow you to connect via IP, this wouldn't be a issue or if they allowed you to install a application that could do direct IP, this wouldn't be an issue as well. And since Ring is owned by Amazon, I would think this could be something could offer.
      And when you say no one would use it, I find that false. I think alot of people look at ReoLink and other solutions for this exact reason. Why do I need to pull my video feed from Ring when I could keep it all local, this would seam more efficient? Also, this would be very useful for people like me who have VERY slow upload speeds who live in rural areas! I have currently 25mb down (no issue here) and 1.5mb up (big issue). And when you have 75 to 90 devices (lot of home automation) on your network fighting for the that 1.5mb up, it gets very bogged down. This is especially true for things like Ring, Amazon, Phillips Hue, etc... that require instant type access to be responsive. The issue I mainly have is when I get a notification and I'm trying to connect to live feed, it can take a minute or more to connect which in some cases and I actually miss what the actual trigger is. I then have to wait for the video to get uploaded to Ring and then watch it which could be 5+ minutes. Make sense?

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing I know is Ring will offer 24/7 recording...if internet is limited in your area, I suggest wired NVR cameras which record to the hard drive.

I also have a ring doorbell 1 where there is no freezing in the recording. Both doorbells are connected to the same mesh network. Is the problem in ring's firmware or a problem with the WiFi network?

    Have you noticed the lights coming on in daylight. I have threshold set to zero and the switch so they use the light sensor which is supposed to stop them from turning on in daylight. According to ring since I have one under my eve it is messing with the ambient light sensor. I sent them a. Video at 4pm in full daylight where the lights where turned on with Motion it is a huge flaw.. let me know what you think.

  • @lakerfansd

    Thanks for another great review. I'm debating between getting the ring floodlight camera or buying the smart lighting floodlight with separate camera (like stickup cam). It seems by buying the light and camera separately I can overcome the recording delay that the floodlight cam may have by recording right when motion is detected. Is that correct? I'm trying to catch mail theft from my mailbox which I think is happening at night. Can't really have a huge lag but it's also an area that has to be wireless. Any thoughts?

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ring’s floodlight cam is wired and it will start recording 3 seconds before the motion has been detected but you do have to consider the distance between the camera to your mailbox for motion detection to work (within 30 feet) A good setup for your case is a ring camera overlooking your mailbox area, then rings motion sensor installed inside the mailbox...so whoever opens your mailbox will trigger a recording and you will not have false recording by people just passing by.

My thoughts are that although a weaker signal might mean a clip takes longer to upload, the resolution itself shouldn’t be affected.

      I am assuming that is what Ring wanted so that the video will be faster to upload but it is the wrong way to go because they are advertising that their cameras are 1080p HD and you only need 2MBPS of upload speed.

      I have found Ring support to be dreadful. Despite asking three times, they have never answered the question “why don’t the technical specs mention that 1080p is dependent on RSSI?”. They even claim to have ran a speed test on my camera showing an upload speed of only 0.07mbps and that I should speak to my ISP. At the time they claim they did this test the camera was not functioning as both batteries had been removed and were being charged.

If you were to download the video on a different device/method It may be different.
