Stationed there during the 70's with my father and again in the 90's myself. One of the last to leave the place in 94 when it closed down. Wish I could have made it there for this special and final closure! Sure do miss the place!
I was stationed at CNA from '70 to '73 with the Base Police 32nd USAFE. Lived in Soest and the real Soesterberg. CNA was in a little place called Den Dolder. The guy we bought cars from lived right off the base. Lost a good friend, Kenny Brown who crashed his MG outside the main gate about 400 yards. My daughter was born in Ooganal Hospital in Utrecht. Some of the best days of my life. Love the people of Nederland.
Was stationed in Germany from '88-92 but stayed at Soesterberg billeting when we could. Went to Holland darn near every other week unless we were broke. Great people. Absolutely loved my time in Germany and the MANY visits to Holland. Didn't know they closed the base.
coolroski Sadly enough they did, the base is now open to the public to visit, and the national military museum is now located there. Many of the shelters and ammonution bunkers are Still in place, But most of the other buildings are demolished
I live near the old base and I can remember the radio station what the use on that time ; A.F.N. American Forces Network and listen often to this station on the FM band on 103 Mhz. It was ment for the american people living near the base in Soesterberg.
Too bad I was not there at that moment because I worked over there at the flight for several years as an n.c.o. security officer in the parachute shop next to headquarters and the car maintenance group. Too bad that just and only today i got this information after so long and too many years.
@AlwaysATexan Nice to hear you liked your time in the low countries. You probably mean Oog en Al Hospital? There still are a lot of things around the base reminding of the time the Americans were here. Nowadays the base still has much of its former glory, but it's a lot quieter without jets. Just gliders.
