You know what holds me back? It's the fear that I do everything that is required, jump through all the hoops, and it amounts to nothing, which is what happened when I attempted to be certified to teach in NC.

Say Mark, when I was a member of the N F B of Vancouver WA in 1983/84, I attended the 1984 national in Phoenix AZ. I learned to despise the N F B local leadership people, before they kicked me out. I hope the N F B is a better organization today than it was then. When I joined the local there were only 5 members, only the officers. When I was kicked out 18 months later there were over 30. Six months later, fewer than 10 members. What I learned was that the local leaders were hateful and corrupt. I learned that the only thing they hated more than being blind was any blind people who could believe in themselves and achieve anything on their own. "You can't do that" was the number one response to everything I tried to do to achieve a better life for blind people. I visited the state convention in Vancouver WA in 2004 and found things even worse then had been 20 years before. So tell me Mark, is it any better today? In 1983 Kenneth Jurnigan claimed 50,000 members. Today you claim 50,000 members? How is that even possible?

      Why were you kicked out?

@@Alien_at_Large The excuse they used was that I had paid my annual dues, by check, a week late. I was therefore disqualified as a member. However they did cash the $5 check and yet never refunded the $5. The real reason they kicked me out was that they were running a scam, playing the "poor helpless blind people game", to collect money from people who donated money thinking that would help blind people. This begging for money was degrading to blind people and against what the NFB claimed to stand for. So of course I had to be kicked out before I could do anything about it.

@@dalecs47 I'm skeptical of my county NFB chapter. I've never heard a peep out of them. But now you've made me wonder: am I wanting the AFB or the NFB?? Or do I want the American Council for the Blind? Which one has credibility, because I'm looking to join a blind teachers association.

@@Alien_at_Large My suggestion would be to talk to people, ask questions. One thing I found out the hard way with the NFB is they don't like ti when people ask hard questions about what they do or what they support or how they support blind people who are working to make their lives and the lives of others better. As an organization, they of the NFB don't like those kinds of questions. But you may find local people in the NFB that you can relate to, people who have good ideas and good attitude. As for the ACB, I have found them not a whole lot better. Some blind people get into the organization and are not real interested in accomplishing anything or making room or listening to new people who want to see positive changes made. That has been my experience. Obviously I am strong minded, independent with strong feelings. So not what most people would call a "Team player". That is just me. Having said that, just because I have negative feelings towards the NFB does not mean I don't have real justification for feeling that way.

@@dalecs47 Thanks a lot for your input! I can't get much info from local people, though. Seems like my son and I are the only blind people in town and they are hella-discriminatory around here. I will ask services for the blind, though.

I love the message as a fellow federationist, but a majority of his speech sounds way too scripted lol. I know with your position you want to maintain professionalism Mr. President but may I suggest more personality in your voice next time? :)
