I work for Amtrak, and I've never heard an M5 on #2052 before! But for good reason:this video was shot prior to its overhaul roughly 1 1/2 to 2 years ago…before I joined Amtrak.Pretty unique horn!
A beautiful, perfectly tuned M5..nathan don't make horns this good anymore, maybe a maintenance headache but this horn sounds so amazing..thanks for showing how a real horn sounds like
So the story behind this is that some, now FORMER, Amtrak Engineer who put the M5 on CDTX 2051 got fired for modifying a FRA fitted horn (K5LA) with a FRA rejected horn (M5). It sounded great but came with a price.
@@dougc190 It's cause new inventions phase out the old technology to make it history. But it is mostly cause of people that hate horns and live near the tracks.
Bad? well that's subjective... to me anything that isn't a K5 sounds good. According to the comments I'm seeing, apparently the engineer put it on and got fired for some BS about the M5 not being FRA approved - despite sounding much nicer than the K5LAs you hear today.
Simple answer to that amazing guy getting fired: The FRA has really bad taste in horns. But if you think that's bad, Transport Canada is even worse! If you're a Passenger System in Canada, they FORCE you to use these absolutely ATROCIOUS horns!
I could see why it would be against a company policy to alter the equipment but I couldn’t see it being illegal. A horn is a horn, the job of a train is to be seen and heard, and that’s what it’s doing. He shouldn’t have been TERMINATED. Maybe written up I could see, but not fired
I bet that the engineer was just blowing the horn that much because it sounds awesome! xD
What a unique sounding horn for the perfect engine

A Nathan M-5 on the unique Amtrak Cali B32-8W, how cool is this! It should stay on this engine
Definitely a very rare horn! Nice!
The sound of B&O E8's and E 9's through Defiance, Ohio in the very late '50's through to Amtrak! Great memories!!
Also the sound of Fairbanks - Morse H-16 -44's through
Sycamore, Ohio in the '50's!!
More good memories!!
Goosebumps.
beautiful sounding horn
Wonderful!
The M-5 when approaching sounds like a K-5LA going away at speed. Harmony is the same, but in a lower key.
She's got one sick horn.
Wonderful
Now THAT was an airhorn!
Uhh yeah it is. That's my horn and I was running.
Thats awesome!
Is it true that you were fired for it?
Coaster and Amtrak have M5 horns too!!
That's obviously an M5, you could never confuse a K5LA with an M5...
Too bad M's were such a maintenance headache, they sound great!
Were h horns ever a maintenance headache
Like the h5 or the 2 h6 horns
@@denasanders2624 worse than the M’s.
@@mafarnz oof
@@denasanders2624 there were prototype m horns so it makes sense that they were worse
Thats slightly out of tune but it still sounds like 1951.
Jasper, where is your trainz videos??? Why did delete them???
why did they do this? its awesome!!!!
sounds great!
sounds AWESOME
Yes, tuned by Bob Packer of Colorado.
Some say the rst5 is king. But M5 all the way! There is no better Robert Swanson knew what was up!!!!

Martinez Sub. Productions uh, no. That's not what happened. But it sure was fun.
If that story is true....... It came with a price, but the mans a goddamn genius!
In fact! Why not have the M5 fitted to both 2051 and 2052?
That's a true story why the hell is that not FRA approved doesn't make sense

Awsome awsome awsome!
I never knew 2052 had a M5!!!
That's defiantly a M5!
if only they put a sick horn on CDTX 8311.
Swanson Would Be Proud.. Very nice..
OMG too good to be true..............
Very sure it's an M5 seeing as how I put it on there. Besides, even on a good day, a K5 never sounds as good as that.
Fantastic horn on a fantastic locomotive. Shame that the FRA's taste in horns is absolute booty.
It's not Amtrak it's CDTX
It's an M5
next time I'll put a p5 on. then we'll try a leslie s5
Did you know that there is one unit on the line that uses a New Cast P5
Well that one is CDTX Cabcar 8306.
With a wrench.
I'm 100% sure it's an M5 horn. I'm friends with the person it belongs to.
WTH HOW?????
Well, you take 4 bolts off at Sacramento, swap out crappy K5LA for M5, then tighten bolts back up and go for a spin.
@@amtk415w you should do it again 🤣

Very nice sound loll mmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !
