      Never understood that attitude. I've never worked in a theater myself but my thought was always "Why should I go out of my way to make their jobs more difficult?". Always been careful not to make a mess.

    • @TheMeanMongoose

      Yeah, that rubbed me wrong as well. It's always shitty behavior to make people's jobs more difficult like this. It's demeaning and frankly, anti-social. The "they will clean it up, it's their job anyway, whatever"-type of attitude is all "fun and games" until people working in the service industry and sanitation have enough, go on full strike and what do you know, you are now drowning in your own filth.

    Like I get the point that they're making, but the theater is a place to experience a performance and then discuss. This applies to plays and orchestral concerts as well. You just don't talk during them, it's bad etiquette. I'm all for making comments about things that happen during movies and whatnot, but you whisper to not disturb the rest of the audience.

    • @gregritter6625

    • @VampireObssessed
      @VampireObssessed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      Bridget Lysaght I see your point, though I'd raise you that it's more important to keep quiet during a live performance because it can otherwise hinder the performers, whereas that isn't the case for movies. I so like their idea of having talking and non talking theatres though, that could be neat

    • @conaireparsons9672
      @conaireparsons9672 7 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      except not everyone goes to a theater to discuses what they are seeing. the point of movies (usually) is to be immersed. and even when you are broken from that because you think that its bad or what every that doesn't mean you get the right to disturb everyone else. they make the argument that you can talk at a sport game, but that is a fully visual and group event. there is not listen to what the players are saying. why I go to a theatre I want to hear the movie dialog, not your fucking soundtrack.this episode is bullshit.

    • @anakinligman3715
      @anakinligman3715 7 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Alexandre Côté-Trotter Yeah, I agree. But all these people in the comments keep defending talking during a movie when the people around you explicitly don't want you to. I support a talking theatre where everyone who goes is agreeing to talk about that movie, not rudely ignoring the wishes of the people around you.

    • @AdorableLittleHeart
      @AdorableLittleHeart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Alexandre Côté-Trotter I agree with you there, having a more relaxed talking theater would be neat. My reasoning was that cinema evolved from live theater performances, so the etiquette would be the same even though the performances is no longer live. Until there is the possibility of a talking theater, people should respect the other patrons who want to enjoy their movie.

  • @MariaVosa
    @MariaVosa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +469

    NOPE. This is the first time I don't identify with your video at all. Just because YOU don't find enjoyment in a movie - good or bad - doesn't mean you have the right to subject all the other paying people to your cliché monologue. I pay for a theatre experience to have a big screen and good sound and the possibility of an immersive experience. You want to run a constant commentary, watch it in your home. Talk afterwards, not during. You can't go 2 hours without voicing an opinion then you have a problem.

When the film was entertaining, we were engrossed, but when something stupid happened we commented on it.

  • @SplatterInker
    @SplatterInker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +224

    ok but what if someone in that theatre WAS enraptured and your talking over it devalues their experience of the film as 'good'? i.e. you are telling them to think the movie is bad because you've openly heckled it.

      Well, consider the 'heckler', who already had their experience devalued. It's not necessarily that either person is right or wrong, but rather different perspectives on the movie going experience. Now, in certain contexts talking in a theater, especially when the person shouts something obscene, should probably count as devaluing the experience. But what if people are whispering to the friend, and someone tells them to quiet down? Maybe that might count as heckling?

    I like the fact that this episode plays the devil's advocate on such a topic. It does score a couple of good points, too.
    That said:
    - Bringing your mewling brat
    - Talking like you're at home
    - Using your phone in any way
    - Littering
    Are things that will, at some point, introduce your face to a very pissed-off elbow.
    People pay for an experience that's already well define: you sit, you watch, you enjoy (or not). Nobody has ever asked you to keep silent at a football game, so don't go and ruin the experience of those who just want one simple thing: to watch.
    Your baby-sitting, very urgent call, and oh-so-clever snarky rewards will wait, because that's literally what you paid for.

      So... no. No, that's not right. Saying southerners are all retarded is pretty offensive to the south. That stereotype, like all others, is fueled by inaccurate portrayals in the media. Plus, it tends to focus mainly on white southerners, when the South is pretty diverse, consisting of Black Americans, Cuban Americans, Mexican Americans, even Cajuns (who yes, are White, but not Anglo White, so some diversity even there). Not to mention the numerous activists, politicians, writers and actors who come from the South. And even then, what's wrong with country southerners? Sure, they may not be the most welcoming people but they're people nonetheless, no?

      I am from India! In Tamil Nadu our Kollywood films are made with Intermission as a part. It's like the film is divided into two halves. Our films are more than 2 hours. To be exact>> Every film is like 2 and a half hours in length. In our theaters, the first day first show is hard to watch because Fans of the stars ( Celebrity) will be screaming the hell out when they see them in the picture! We tamilians believe theater watching is the best experience to watch a film.

      Here in Holland, some movie theaters have intermissions, some don't, and I strongly prefer the latter. A break in the movie just pulls you out, as many people in this comment sections have mentioned, you get immersed in the film, I don't want that to be broken. The only exception is when I watch a recording of something that is designed to have intermissions, like a musical.

    Personally, I love movie theaters. The room, the lighting, the huge ass screen, the audio, the soda which always seems to be made just right. I love almost every part of it. The things I don't like are the shitty seats and people. And it's not because I necessarily don't like human interaction, but it's because that people always make noise. I've rarely been to a show where someone didn't make an obnoxious noise. It's annoying. I paid money to watch a movie, not listen to someone else's conversation. If I wanted to talk about a movie I'd go find people to talk about movies. And maybe there are places that can have that like a theater where you can talk.
    But audience participation, in any art form, has to still be measured. If you were listening to a performer, and you couldn't focus on them because some asshole keeps bugging you, you'd want them to shut up too.
    The analogies they make to football and concerts don't take into account what those performances are vs the cinemas. A football game is a mostly visual experience. As long as you see the score on the screen and the players doing their thing, you really can't ruin that experience by yelling or cheering. Concerts usually ask their audiences to sing along with the song that's being sung. You're not cheering and yelling during the national anthem. And you're not singing another singers songs at a concert.
    And criticism doesn't get a pass here either. Football fans don't want someone to come up during a game and tell them how all those players are gonna get brain disease. And no one goes to a concert and then starts telling people about how shitty the performer is unless that performer just screwed you over.
    Tl;dr cinemas aren't the same as sports or concerts. People do actually like to watch movies in silence. Just because you don't like the experience doesn't mean anyone wants to hear it.

    Love people watching, but this episode I have no frame of reference for. Even at home, I don't talk during movies. I've also stopped inviting certain friends over to watch movies because they talk during them. The one exception is when you watch intentionally bad movies to make fun of them, like "the room" or "manborg". In my experience, people are not as funny as they think they are and usually their comments are only funny to themselves.
    Also, in many major cities there are theaters that encourage talking or even throwing things at the screen. In Ottawa, Canada we have the Mayfair which is deigned to look like an old time auditorium and watching a film there is more like a party than a traditional theater experience.
    Please don't cancel people watching after one bad episode.

    I think Intermissions should make a come back for certain movies. Intermissions use to exist in the US for those big budget Epic movies. Because they were so long. I think movies like the Hobbit Series and even Lord of the Rings could have done a lot better in theaters with intermissions written into them. Because then nothing is being cut down and you don't have to wait on the extended cut to get what the studios were fully going for. The Hobbit movies suffered a great deal from time to restraints. But think about if Intermissions made a come back for longer films to exist. It could have been a better movie.

    One of my favorite memories of watching a movie in the theatres was during Lord of the Rings 3. Not because the movie was good or anything, but because the audience as a whole started getting collectively upset about the long, multiple endings. People were shouting things like "Is it over yet?" "Oh my *GOD* not another ending?" "What the Hell?" "I wanna go home already" and then when the credits finally appeared people stood up and were like "YES IT'S FINALLY OVER!! YES!!!!" My group shared a laugh with another group over the whole thing, and overall, it was the funnest experience I ever had in a movie.
    Now I still don't think we should be able to talk in every movie, but that was one time where talking enriched the experience

      Ayleeta T Netflix isn't as accessible as you might think. If you live in the country Internet is often so expensive that a few nights watching Netflix will net you a ridiculous bill at the end of the month. Netflix itself is pretty cheap, but if your Internet sucks you're basically screwed. Of course, the theatre is no cheaper, but if you have, for some reason, decided to cough up the money to watch a movie in a theatre, aren't you entitled to your money's worth? Namely, the ability to actually watch the film. Just my two cents.

  • @Joshtika18

    Yeah, except sometimes when someone is talking during a movie, you can ACTUALLY miss a line of dialogue, and since you can't REWIND a movie theatre movie, that can ACTUALLY ruin the experience. Plus, just because YOU think a movie sucks, and if everyone ELSE thinks a movie sucks, doesn't mean you have the right to ruin it for the one guy that DOES like it. Hell, maybe it's a masterpiece and he's the only one that sees it's true genius or something. Plus, people don't go to the movies to be in a crowd, they go there because it's a larger screen than anyone who's not a millionaire can afford, which is usually 99.9% of people, thus there is a high demand for them.
    I will admit, one of the best times I've had at a movie was when my friend and I were alone in a theatre and could comment on it as loudly as we wanted, (It was "The Spirit" and it was hilariously crappy,) but still, if there was someone else in there who GENUINELY liked it, it would be shitty for us to ruin it for that individual. The "talking/no talking" sections is an interesting idea, but that would literally require twice the building size, or half the showings, and seeing as movie theatres have trouble making money as it is, (they actually barely get anything on ticket sales, it's mostly concessions,) that's just simply not going to happen.
    Besides, what observations can you make during the movie that can't be discussed AFTERWORDS? (Huh, maybe a seperate room where you could discuss the movie with strangers after it's over would be nice....yeah! :D)

    I've really enjoyed most of the previous episodes of this series... But this one just annoyed the hell out of me. The crux of the argument seems to be "its ok to talk through a movie as long as the movie sucks". The problem is not everyone is going to agree on what does or does not suck, and it is incredibly snobbish to think that some people's taste is worth more than others. I felt so bad for that poor guy who just wanted to enjoy his dumb action movie in peace.

    Everyone in that theater paid money to watch the movie, not to listen to other people's commentary.
    I'm saddened that our culture of internet and social media makes people think their comments are important enough that everyone else should care about them (insert snarky response about this comment HERE). Especially to the point of interrupting things other people CHOSE to do, and paid for.
    If you think what you have to say is so important that everyone else wants to hear it, you should probably save it for that paid speaking appearance you were offered.
    Walking out of a movie and asking for a refund is perfectly fine.

  • @mathcamel
    @mathcamel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    Literally the only thing worse than shitty movies is listening to strangers talk during shitty movies because they think they are clever. When I go to a theater it's because it's one of the few places where I can focus on the film, at home I'm chatting on facebook, playing a game, crocheting, painting my nails and/or talking to my spouse, but in the theater I can't do those things and it creates a different experience. One I'm willing to pay for, especially when I'm seeing something for the first time and there are giant explosions on screen. People who talk during the theater are a plague, please sit outside the theater and feel special and let me watch the movie I'm enjoying. If I don't enjoy it I will leave and give you a wave on the way out.

    Love the series, but this is one that totally misses the mark. Unless it's a comedy or a full blown action movie (i.e. John Wick), I don't want to watch it with my friends at home. The comments and jokes are cool, but when I'm watching The Revenant, I don't want to hear a dick joke about the bear. I go to the movies alone every week so that I can get away from life and enjoy art in it's highest form.
    I am a fanatic when it comes to movie premieres because I think that's the only time it's acceptable to make noise in a theatre. For instance, when I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens on opening night, I was cheering and clapping just like everyone else when dope shit happened, but it wasn't a constant thing. It was for the moments of nostalgia or victory and everyone wanted to partake. But take just a month ago, I went to see Logan on my birthday in IMAX and there were about 15 people total in the theatre. These four dudes behind started a joke war with a guy sitting next to me so throughout the movie strangers just kept making idiotic jokes back and forth and it nearly ruined an incredible movie.
    I understand if people want to talk during a movie, but if that's your plan, go to a showing at 10:00 AM on Saturday, actually wait, don't do that because I do that to get away from all of the assholes who talk during movies at 8PM. Basically, great video series, but this encourages assholes who don't understand what the theatre is made for.

    I don't know why these have so many dislikes. They're well polished animations that talk about ideas. They're not trying to tell you that the message in each episode is right or that you have to agree with it, they're presenting the perspectives of a group of different individuals.
    The whole point of People Watching is to make you think about WHY other people might think the way they do. Sometimes the show comes across as a little preachy, but if we think for a second (like the show wants us to do) we'd realise that it's almost always intended to be the character's voice, not the writer's.
    I really like these, and I don't always come to the same conclusion as the characters, but that's not the point. We're meant to think and enjoy the perspective these episodes offer on something we might not consider, and I think that's a very respectable thing indeed.

    I'm a big fan of this series but I'm not in agreement with this episode at all. Film as an art form is something I take seriously, so I'm gonna take the time to defend my stance here.
    "A theater full of people is a stupid thing to seek out if what you really want is silence." The point of going to the theater is to see the film when it comes out, not to sit in a crowd of people. You're paying to see the film and to have people talking to each other while you're trying to take in the movie is kinda unfair to those people who want to watch the movie and not have it interrupted. If you treat every film that comes out like a joke and don't take film seriously then that's fine, you do you, but stop going to the theater. I watch bad movies all the time and pick on them with friends as well, it's a lot of fun, but I do it at home where I won't bother someone who wants to watch the film without the sound of my voice. This is why I feel like films should be released on digital the same time they're released in theaters, that way people who want to watch with friends and talk during the movie can do it without ruining the movie for people who want to see and hear everything in the film and not miss stuff. Consider the two friends at the beginning watching TV and shooting the shit realizing it could be fun to do that with a new movie, they shouldn't go to the theater because that would annoy the other paying customers who enjoy the big screen and surround sound of a theater experience, so let's just rent the movie (for less money than the theater price) off iTunes (which really, if your plan is to pick on the movie anyway, why not just watch something on Netflix, why do you need it to be a new film?). I've gone to the theater specifically to watch a movie I know I won't like and make fun of it with friends, but we went to the movie when it had already been out awhile so the theater would probably be empty and we agreed beforehand that if there were a lot of people there we wouldn't annoy them and would just talk about the movie after. And if we could've rented on iTunes we probably would've. Because movies are art and having loud voices and laughter interrupt the film would be like buying a book and finding that every third page was just scribbled over, everything in them is important and there for a reason. This is why one character mentioning that people shouldn't take the plot seriously bothers me, if you aren't going to pay attention and take the film in completely because you have the view that movies are just about the money (which I don't agree with but whatever) then don't judge it like you've experienced it. I'm not saying that a film shouldn't be judged if it's so bad that you don't even want to finish it, I'm saying that if you go to a movie, don't pay attention because you're on your phone, then complain that the movie sucked, that's not really fair. You could say that the movie was so uninteresting that you kept distracting yourself with your phone, I guess, but I mean why did you even go to the movie if you didn't want to try and watch it. If you don't pay attention to a movie because you're talking/on your unsilenced phone and then negatively criticize it, that's just wrong. You wouldn't say a meal sucked because you sat in the restaurant while someone else ate the food and you just kept spitting in it ruining their meal.
    Also, the reason talking isn't discouraged at a football game or rock concert is two fold, first off a football game is not a piece of art where every single thing that happens adds to the appreciation of the art, it's a goddamn football game. That's an insane comparison. Saying a football game is like a film in the theater is like saying eating a hotdog is just like tying your shoes because you use your hands for both. As for a rock concert, while it is art it's still a way different thing. It's louder than a movie in the theater so talking is completely drowned out. It's usually songs the audience is already familiar with and will probably sing along to, where a movie is brand new. Also, fans of the band can meet and mingle during the show because they all came to see the band, a movie isn't like that... I mean, like, this is ridiculous, comparing a live concert to a pre-recorded, edited film designed not to be talked over. Like, come on. That was gonna be the second part of my two fold tangent here, both a football game and a rock concert are live, which means they can be dynamic. Any distractions from the crowd (which are way, way less likely do to the nature of these two experiences) can be handled live without ruining the game/show. However the only way to do this with a theater experience is for the guy in the projection room to pause the film if the talking gets too loud, which creates a whole mess of new problems not the least of which is scheduled film times being disrupted.
    If you wanna watch a movie to pick on it with friends, the theater isn't the best choice. If it's a new movie you and your friend group have a reason for wanting to see and joke about specifically (for example, you guys always make fun of a certain director's films and his first film in awhile is coming out) then try to pick a date and time when the theater will be empty. If the theater fills up, talk about the movie after! Don't ruin a movie for people who genuinely want to see it, it's selfish. And I get that that's your point with the 'talking theaters and no-talking theaters' thing, but that's an expensive solution. Every theater would have to double in size.
    Look, I'm sorry for this rant. I hope I made sense, but really, I'm just angry because all you're doing with this video in convincing assholes that it's okay to talk during movies, and it really isn't. Again, I usually love this series, it's fantastic, but I think you missed the mark with this one. I'm not sure what the message is. Sorry.

    Another great episode. I think comenters in general are being too extremist, and the argument the video tries to gives its also so. You should be able to talk during movies, you can absolutly discuss whatever you want, but you need to keep it down, just for respect. I allways talk with my friends while watching movies and nobody has ever "shhh" me, you just got to figure out the limits.
    .... I think people are pissed a bit because this series usually has great arguments, which goes to show the bar the other episodes have set, let's take this as an oportunity to apreciate that. A lesser episode is a given, allways.

  • @balls261
    @balls261 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I feel like the other People Watching episodes are entertaining because these people are vulnerable and talk about things that are relatable on a deeper human-condition kind of level. This episode on the other hand is just a bunch of cynical hipsters who don't understand the point of a movie theater.
    The one guy literally said "I think art is subjective" (which by the way, brilliant statement...) and yet they were justifying shitting on a movie in a theater full of people just because they didn't like it. The characters are already dangerously whiney in other episodes, but at least they're usually complaining about some real stuff. Here they just come off as extremely unlikeable.
    So it's not just the argument you're making here cracked, it's the way you made it. That's why everyone is responding badly to this one. It didn't even bother to show the other side of the argument, and just came off as really entitled and unbearably pretentious.

      ben zur it also makes it pretty obvious which feature viewing format fits those sorts of conversations better. Yes they talk in the theater, in a way reminiscent of their earlier couch and TV format, in the end they reminisce for such a format compared to the movie theater they got booted from. In doing so it insinuates which format works for the viewing experience they all seem to prefer and how it is not the quiet movie theater experience. And that's okay because by the end of the video it's made apparent that the communicative movie experience they want doesn't fit in theaters, they get kicked out and complain theater's don't fit their needs. Because they don't and we've already been shown what does.
      This isn't telling people to talk in theaters, that's all I'm saying.

    I use to enjoy watching movies in theater and I wanted to talk to my friends about how bad the movie was but never could. Had to wait till the end of the movie to talk shit about it. But when I'm watching something at home and all of us talk about how bad the movie is it made the shitty movie actually enjoyable. Too bad that we grew apart and I did not go to a movie theater in 3 years. I just watch movies online all by myself.

    • @dunfalach
      @dunfalach 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you still have contact with some of them, but are physically apart, there's always the possibility you could arrange a date/time for everyone to hop on Skype or some other voice chat and watch the same movie online at the same time. Not sure if that's an option for you but it might help.

    Yeah, . . just take it outside. For those who want to see the movie, you're interfering with immersion. For those finding it lacking, depart, if you do so early enough, seek refund, but whether lit phones or conversations, you interfering with others' supposed enjoyment, which in part has led to some theaters with strict no talking policies, reserved age limited seating, and no late arrivals. But maybe just buying that huge widescreen home tv and sound system will remove the need for the theater and those who had to talk thru it. Have a nice day.

    So basically, total strangers in a movie theater must adhere to YOUR opinions
    Your opinion that a movie is bad somehow warrants you being allowed to ruin it for other people who might be enjoying it
    I.e. You're right and they're wrong
    Which, given the episodes I've seen so far, is what I totally from the writers of this show
    Either whisper or save your precious thoughts for after the movie. There, fixed your problem.
    P.S. Despite me disagreeing with the video, I still enjoyed it. Love the art style, very Bojack

    Besides because of my auditory processing disorder I can't understand people when there's background noise. Like a lot of people talking. Talking with friends in public is the worst.
    But I mean having the two different theatres (talking and non-talking) isn't that bad of an idea.

I love this series so much, I didn't like this episode too much, but if its an attempt to find an ironic critique , from people watching it, knowingly expecting a reaction just boost someones pretentious ego, then I'm not sure whats t be learned from it. I once went to an early showing of avengers:endgame. Throughout, you’d hear conversation and discussion but no one interrupted anybody’s conversation. There were times of collected silence at highlights and such. It was a whole room of people sharing their love and interest of a franchise. Harmony among mankind like the Germans and English playing soccer on Christmas Day. That was the best experience I’ve had in a theater
