    I genuinely cried, because her want for "Heaven" wasn't at ALL for her own sake, but for those who were innocent whose lives were taken unjustly. Sitting there, day in, day out, with nothing else to do but watch the death counts on the news. She created this idea in her head simply because she needed a comfort to know that people who died like that get some kind of justice, some kind of Heaven. I love Candy's character.

    It's sad that so many people are taking this episode literally. She's not talking about literal physics, it's metaphors and symbolism intended to depict a struggle to find meaning and cope with the fear of death while retaining a belief in the value of human life. It's a beautiful episode and one of my favorites, I wish more people got it.

Remeber when the guy had asked "So you really believe this", she didn't say yes or no, she said "I have to" Its all just a coping mechanism. who knows... we can not fathom the possibilities this universe has to offer. We could even only know but the tip of a massive ice-burg, we already know that physics is upended the small the scale we go. The larger we go the more complex mathematics we need to explain the universe, maybe eventually we could travel through time, or observe through time, maybe we will be able to digitally transport consciousness little by little until it is entirely digital. maybe we can eventually escape the heat death of the universe.

  • @PaulCombs
    @PaulCombs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1772

    I can't believe I'm commenting on a TH-cam video, but here goes.
    Obviously the main character understands death isn't scientifically bullshit. She just created a coping mechanism. Instead of religion, it's the belief that we will transcend death using technology and human ingenuity.
    I know it's impossible. I just find the thought beautiful. I've lost my mother and the rest of my family way too young, and I don't believe they're in heaven or wherever waiting for me, but it is comforting to think about the idea of meeting them again, regardless of how impossible it is.

      Do you really think that anything is impossible in an endless universe in an infinite multiverse?

    • @landonhayes8530
      @landonhayes8530 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Jim if there is an infinite number of universes, then it stands to be possible where there is a universe without an infinite number of universes. And just to specify, I mean there is a finite number of universes, just a number far beyond human conception

    • @DistractingTest
      @DistractingTest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I appreciate your interest in metaphysics Danny. Wouldn't it be acceptable to equate unfathomably large numbers with infinite by human perception? Even a limited number of universes beyond human conception would each individually contain everything we could ever potentially know and do. That's where you truly go infinite, because the causality of each moment of you live contains an infinite number of potential outcomes, even in what you do after reading this comment.
      Edit: Ultimately this is as moot as anything, but perhaps useful enough to expand the potential choices of at least one reader.

    • @zeratulrus142
      @zeratulrus142 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Naw, this episode wasn't actually about death, guys. It was about coping with chaos and tragedy in an uncaring universe. This isn't some scientific argument for a man-made heaven, it's about empathising with our shared fear of meaninglessness, (best personified in death,) and how people put into those dire situations will conceive of anything to make sense of senselessness. Like she said, "I basically have to." This is about humanising and empathising with your crazy religious aunt, your best friend who's bonkers about crystals, your mom who's convinced the world will end and stocks up on canned food and bottled water. It's easy to look at that behaviour and those beliefs and label them stupid, born from ignorance and gullibility. It's quite a bit harder to see the desperation behind those faithful eyes. Harder, and maybe more noble.

      dr Strangelove. That's why I gave its a thumbs up.. I think everyone is picking out all the flaws in the logic, which can be done by any high-school freshman. What people are missing is the subtext, the fact that facts mean nothing without foundation and context. In death you can not say that you are going to be granted an "afterlife" anymore than someone could prove you won't. It's meta as fuq but I like the interpretation.

Vanilla Sky (Abre Los Ojos is the original) is similar to San Junipero. I wanna believe that death it's just a version of a different life. That we actually cannot die. She says she isn't interested in religion, and a few sentences later creates her own. One of my favorite definitions of religion is the act of using faith to project your hopes on reality. This is precisely what she does. Couching it in science fiction doesn't change this. She merely substitutes an all-powerful future humanity for an all-powerful God.

    • @SapphireDragon357

      You're one of those people that calls atheism a religion, aren't you?

    • @BeinIan
      @BeinIan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      SapphireDragon357 Regardless of whether they are or aren't that type of person, that doesn't change that fact that the comment was right. Granted, I thought it was still pretty clear that the video was talking about established religions, but what Otterway said wasn't wrong. The difference between believing in science and what she described is that she was having faith that future science would figure something out, rather than taking the facts and ideas from past science to form a theory.

    • @jiroumochizuki
      @jiroumochizuki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ........ It would take some twisting to think of atheism as, "using faith to project your hopes onto reality." XD

    • @SapphireDragon357
      @SapphireDragon357 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ninja, well said. You're not a typical youtube commentator. I still disagree that faith in science, past, present, or future, constitutes a religion, but calling people wrong is not an insult.
      jiroumochizuki, I agree, which is why I hate it when people call atheism a religion. They are wrong, and that is what I was implying about Otterway, which was... judgemental and the worst form of sarcasm, and I'm sorry about that, but it wasn't intended as an insult.
      I'm a bit caught up in the fact that every comment I see on this video is 'OMG physics, WRONG!' or 'OMG misinformation!' or 'OMG religion!' and nobody is talking about how this is PHILOSOPHICAL discussion, and she's talking about potential, which is not actually any form of energy, of course, but something we want to talk about. What I find so wrong about the original post is that putting your faith in humanity and technology, even if we don't have it yet, even if that means it's currently science fiction, is NOT creating a religion, and to say so is to confuse the difference between religion and belief. Replacing an all-powerful god with all-powerful humanity is exactly what makes it not a religion.
      I suppose all this is leading up to is a discussion of semantics I don't really want to have. What I'm saying is that I severely dislike the way the OP said what they wanted to say, but I shouldn't have been an ass about telling them that, and they have every right to say it.

    • @niklashansen5432
      @niklashansen5432 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think that was kind of the point. She says that humans need a shield from the bluntness of reality and created religions to deal with death and that they didn´t have the science yet. Then she goes on to do the same thing thus proving her initial point.

    Guys, the writers DO understand the law of conservation and matter, they deliberately chose to take it in a different direction for an interesting narrative rather than scientific accuracy. Like nearly all movies and shows you've ever watched do that same thing but are way more blatant and insulting about it. I really liked this, got a lot from it, but from my point of view, humans don't break the rules, we just learned them and got better at playing within them. A bear moves a rock to get through a pass. It's manipulating its environment. Humans just got real good at moving rocks. We're still following all the laws of nature. Maybe there are laws that we haven't discovered yet that would allow all this. The thing about technology and science is that after a certain point, those before that level of advancement could not possibly imagine life after it, so who knows. But for now, we don't, so we have to assume we're right, as terrible as that sounds, logically. And that may very well mean no afterlife.

    • @mq8858
      @mq8858 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one time I had a dream about making the afterlife. I made it so everybody could be happy, but not everybody wants the same thing. So I made multiple different realities, all with different things to do so people don't get bored. Everybody was happy, because I was not a piece of shit who made a hell for people. Even "bad" people came, because they just needed healing to be good people. Then I woke up and realized even if there isn't an afterlife I'd be ok dying.
      In the end, nothing matters. There's no real reason to live.

      mattering is self evident. if nothing matters then it doesnt matter that it doesnt matter and is therefore of no relevance whatsoever. all we are left with is if someone or some people care. if they care then it matters to to thm and they will perform action based on that principle, action and reaction are the principle of any equation. it is therefore relevant.
      conclusion: everything matters but meaninglessness

    I think a lot of people in the comments are missing the point of this episode. I'm pretty sure they're not really trying to make the point that death goes against the laws of nature. I think peeps are getting to hung up on the science aspect, which... yeah it's dumb. But that's not the point. It's an episode about the reaction to death. Trying to rationalise something beyond rationalisation. We don't know what happens when we die. Not really. Maybe there isn't anything. Probably not. But whatever it is, whatever happens, it's beyond comprehension and when faced with the event, we try to rationalise the after-effect however we can. That's the point of this episode. It's someone developing a relationship with death, even if they are wrong. It's not about the science. It's bullshit lingo trying to make sense of the un-make-sensible.

      Blame Toby Videos that doesn't excuse anything. There is so much more wrong with this then the science. The person in the video is extremely self absorbed. Her ideas about society are disgusting. I've seen 8 year olds with a better handle on death. People are not special snowflakes, our ideas, the sum of an individual are insignificant compared to the universe. Humanity it self is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. There needs to be less people like this.

      It's a CHARACTER, not a person, she's been written to have these flaws, like so many of us do, not to be right or wrong, but to present a human experience and explain it - the point as far as I am aware is that the character finds it difficult to rationalise the loss that death presents, not just hers, but of other people, so to cope she is rationalising death with her theory, which she compares in part to religion and even admits that she knows it's bullshit, but if she didn't have this hope she would go crazy trying to face her own mortality.

      well if she was gonna talk about her insights about death and what she feels about her mortality, there is no need to add a clickbait title, a claim early in the video, and scientific concepts that are not directly related to the topic at hand

    • @commonsense5494
      @commonsense5494 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A. She's not self absorbed. She says that she's not concerned about her death, and then we see a bunch of examples of unnecessary, meaningless deaths.
      B. This theory is not impossible. We know that, according to physics, that there's no difference between past, present, future, and that time travel is theoretically possible. We know that artificial realities can be created. We are working on understanding what thought and memories are. We are working on how to insert an actual mind into a virtual reality. With quantum computing, it could be possible to have virtually unlimited space for an artificial reality and the trillions of humans who have/will exist. She's talking about the future. If you want to claim that this is impossible, you have to demonstrate that it's impossible, and you can't do that. I'm not counting on it being true, however. ;)
      C. human insignificance relative to the universe is irrelevant to this discussion. It's very significant on a personal level. I can comprehend how small a part of the universe I am, but that doesn't diminish my importance to myself, or the importance of people I care about. Saying that we don't matter, just because we're a tiny part of the whole is just being dismissive of consciousness.
      Many of the criticisms that I see are quite obviously from religious folk. They don't like her assertion that we created god(s) and religion in an attempt to explain the unexplainable and to comfort us in the face of death. Regardless of your beliefs, this is certainly a large part of the appeal of religion. It's disingenuous to pretend that it's not.
      All in all, I found this to be an interesting proposition and a good thought exercise. I understand that most anything will have criticisms, but if you're really upset by this, then you should take a deep look on why this bothers you so much.

She even said it herself: "[near-dying] makes you crazy," implying that even she is having trouble believing the things she said.

      Regardless, it's all just pseudoscience in this case as neither of those deals with consciousness or social interactions.
      That said, the idea that humanity (or some other species out there) could (or already has) achieved some form of technological immortality and then retroactively applied that to all (sentient?) species of the universe is a far more appealing concept to me than any religion out there. Don't particularly believe it, but at least it doesn't strike me as outright idiocy either.

    Although not really scientific, it's an astute observation on how and why, humans might have a difficult time coming to terms with the concept of their own, or anyone else's death. I like this series more and more. It really attempts to dig a level deeper, and show something more than just the subject it baites in the title.
    Even if you speed date honestly and effectively, who says you'll meet the right person?
    Most of the things you are insecure about is the same things as others, but still we won't tell anyone these things, no matter how common they are.
    Depression doesn't feel like a part of yourself, but it is. It's not something you just can opt out of, and it isn't the same for everyone, but it will get you down no matter how much you try and go against it.
    Death, and the instant, complete and permanent cognitive shutdown of the human mind is puzzling to us, and one thing is elderly, but if we could bring people back to life, wouldn't we do that tho all those who's life was untimely and unjustly interrupted?
    The last video still begs the question of sentience, but it's a reasonable question to make anyways.

      You didn't watch the video well then. Let's take two statements:
      "death violates the laws of the universe" - First, this is a ridiculous claim. Second, why say this unless you are trying emphasize how much science fails. It is the platform which they jump off at. They could have also said, "I have an idea... you just have to convince yourself that rational thinking is meaningless" and nothing would have been lost.
      "I see how this whole religion thing got started" - This is the second platform they use to change the dialogue. And again, it is stating "for those that believe, your dumb. You only believe these things because you can't rectify your emotions with reality and current knowledge."
      Both of these statements miss the point of both ways of thinking. And these two ways of thinking make up 99.999% of all people.
      If that wasn't bad enough, the end is even less genuine because it uses both topics that they both insulted to make a solution that is worse than either of the previous ideas.
      Again. If you like it, good for you. Just don't expect others to feel the same.

      It's not just about the physical action, she said so. At first even I was like "Yeah birth, duh."
      She's talking about the history of your life up until death. The dreams you had, the impact you made, the lives you changed. For all the potential and beauty of one life, the world should be weeping or breaking at the death of one innocent person, yet nothing happens. Life just goes in callously and that's where the sadness is.

      It's not about disagreeing to seem smart, and the video's not even generally interesting. The problem is that it's philosophical premise is being based on a small handful of misunderstood scientific concepts being extrapolated to answer one of the most difficult question our species will ever ask, which is clearly just a panicked attempt by the author to relieve the terror that comes with realizing their own mortality. This video doesn't accomplish anything more than what a drunken discussion between a couple of schmucks would. Whoever wrote this script is very likely a layman in all of the disciplines it shoehorns into this video. I have no clue what Cracked is thinking posting this stuff.

      SonoftheWay35 - It's Newton's third law of motion. I.e. you cannot push on a thing without in turn feeling a force pushing back. Conservation of energy is a different thing. Related, and actually more fundamental, but different. And Newton didn't know about it back in the 17th century.

    • @danfr
      @danfr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Also something people keep skipping over about the law of conservation of energy, is that it only applies within a closed system.
      And more importantly is the concept of entropy; the natural tendency of energy to in essence disperse and move towards less useful states. The energy may not be destroyed, however it can transform to a state that is no longer useful or conductive towards life.
      Suggesting the concept of death as unnatural is also absurd when you remember we already have a respected theory for the "death" of the universe itself, heat death.

      There are no bad lines of thought, and of course thinking about death is not original, but some of the ideas presented here are. Calling things unoriginal has lost all meaning in today's society, as it's all been thought of and discussed before. There are simply new perspectives on things.
      Throwing that out, it's really NOT a good argument, and the science IS all wrong. Of course death doesn't violate the laws of nature. One might assume the author, being of reasonable intelligence, knew that before making such an outrageous statement. Why then would you think that an appeal to incorrect science was an attempt to lend validity to this argument, or that the argument even reflects the author's opinions?
      Nowhere in this video do they even ATTEMPT to find meaning in 'life and death and randomness and order' nor is anything she said based on her own near-death experience, but instead on the disturbing state of the world and all of the OTHER lives lost while she was forced to sit there healing.
      The section based on incorrect science leads into a discussion of the possibly limitless potential of humanity to find solutions to problems. Yes, we do have higher brain function and may choose solutions outside of our 'nature.' Yes, we do fear death above all. Yes, society is a social construct created to fulfill our needs. From this point on in the video, it's philosophical SPECULATION about the enduring hope for humankind. We want to conquer death, so maybe someday we will. And if we do, perhaps someday we'll find a way to reach back and save those that died before the tech was created. All of this leads to the true point of the video: "To die is to find out if humanity ever conquers death." If you die and nothing happens, we don't. If you die and wake up in the future, whether it be through cloning, brain transplant, cyborgism, simulation, what have you... then we have.
      Of course all of this is just a subjective view of the video from my perspective, and there are as many valid discussions about it as there are people that watch it, if they're willing to think past 'it was just stupid' and find their own meaning. I wish you luck. I'd be happy to discuss your finding with you when you're ready.

    You don't die when you die. And all the experience, the social interactions, the ideas you had aren't lost. They're still around, evolved as they've influenced people's lives in tiny or big ways, with tiny or big repercussions. The only way you would really die is if everyone, everywhere, would completely deny your existence or deface the memory/consequences of what you did in such a scale that whatever you did would be completely unrecognizable (but then again, factually, your influence would still remain anyway).
    Just in case though, it's wise to keep an eye on historians. Sneaky, sneaky historians.

    This year, nearly six months ago i was hit by a bus. I was lucky, i didnt even get a fracture but i did break the bus's window with my head. I was conscious the whole time except for the exact moment of the impact. The next four hours were the absolute worst of my life. Im a doctor and i was terrified the whole time of the bad things that could happen to me, not only of dying.
    Being 26 years old i can tell you though, that at the verge of death, all i thought about was that i didnt say goodbye to my mum, that i didnt say goodbye to my friends.
    In retrospective, i realize that i was sad and scared of not being able to tell my people how much i loved them one more time. There was this possibility of thinking "oh no, i regret this or that", or "im too young to die", or whatever. But i felt love for the people around me.
    Do what you want in life. Surround yourself with people who make you proud, whom you'd admire, people who make you feel dearly loved, who make you happy.

    I'm not even religious, but the sheer intolerance of people in the comment section is depressing as hell.
    Is it a completely rational argument? From the conservation of energy perspective, no. But the sheer arrogance of people to assume that we can categorically disprove the existence of an afterlife is ridiculous. By its very nature, it is supernatural - that is, outside the laws of the universe.
    I personally feel that we can't know for certain one way or the other till after death - either its a cessation of consciousness or there's something more - but we should live our lives under the assumption that it's all we will ever have.
    I don't fault people for feeling otherwise - everyone needs their own way of coping with the sheer shittiness of life - and if you try and take that away from people, you're a goddamn asshole and a self-righteous prick. That goes for people on both sides of the aisle.

    Think of human consciousness ending as a water puddle in the hot sun. If a water puddle disappears in the sun, it doesn't mean it's a violation of physics and the water simply was wiped from existence, it just means that the matter is in a different state. This is the first law of Thermodynamics. It's "The Law of Conservation of Mass Energy". Come on people.
    "The conservation of energy is an absolute law, and yet it seems to fly in the face of things we observe every day. Sparks create a fire, which generates heat-manifest energy that wasn’t there before. A battery produces power. A nuclear bomb creates an explosion. Each of these situations, however, is simply a case of energy changing form. Even the seemingly paradoxical dark energy causing the universe’s expansion to accelerate, we will see, obeys this rule.
    The law of conservation of energy, also known as the first law of thermodynamics, states that the energy of a closed system must remain constant-it can neither increase nor decrease without interference from outside. The universe itself is a closed system, so the total amount of energy in existence has always been the same. The forms that energy takes, however, are constantly changing."

      That water is quite SIMPLE. You Bresha on the other hand are a complex set of information, electrical charges located on your brain, self aware and with memories of recent events, older ones, and natural reflexes. Information. Kinda like a PC. The most important part of your personal PC is not the harddisk or processor or rams. Is the information you store. passwords, documents, internet history. That information is what makes your PC unique and yours. Diferent entirely from any PC all around the world. This video is about loss of information. Not necesarly death but random death. Complex humans beings killed by accident. and yes coping and fighting against this has been a quest for mankind since they picked up a bone to stab a beast threatening their loved ones.

    Death is the reaction to life

    • @SapphireDragon357
      @SapphireDragon357 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting theory, but not technically true. There are (is?) species of jellyfish that simply revert back to a younger form when they grow old, becoming effectively immortal. Death is a reaction to damage to the body causing a shutting down of life systems which is not necessarily a guarantee. In almost every instance of life on this planet, that damage is caused indirectly by time, but it's that 'almost' that disproves everything.

    • @TrainDozer
      @TrainDozer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SapphireDragon357 But if everything has an equal OR opposite reaction. The life of a jellyfish being renewed at its end is the EQUAL reaction. Death for most other things is the OPPOSITE reaction.

    • @SapphireDragon357
      @SapphireDragon357 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is apologist the new word for being polite and not insulting the people I'm debating with. I'm SORRY I was too busy with the science and philosophy to keep up with the semantics.

    • @SapphireDragon357
      @SapphireDragon357 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, also it's flawed logic to state that just because all the jellyfish that have died so far have died, that they all will. The point is that it is theoretically possible that any one of these jellyfish could live forever, or at least until the heat death of the universe. (And who knows, maybe we'll prevent that, too.) Therefore, it is an actual exception to the posited rule (which doesn't actually exist yet, it's just a debate, buddy). This particular bit of science is quite separate from the video as well, so perhaps I have your permission to continue debating here while still maintaining that the video was not scientific? I can multitask. How about you?

    • @TrainDozer
      @TrainDozer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SapphireDragon357 All of science is kinda flawed. Really science is just making things understandable, even though just because we think we understand, doesnt mean we know. Science doesnt necessarily know, it understands. Really arguing over a scientific law is arguing over semantics because no one actually knows. Philosophy is literally just seeing things from a different angle from someone else. To argue philosophy is to argue the same thing but from different perspective. If you are seeing the same exact dog as someone else and you stare at its asshole and someone else stares it in the eyes, you see something different, but you still see a dog, so it doesnt matter your perspective. So in conclusion, science and philosophy ARE semantics. So you are too busy with semantics to keep up with semantics. Good job.

    To be honest, I didn't like her use of science at first.
    Also, I used to think like her, as a kid, I thought about all those people that died in history, the "important" ones that shaped countries and the unimportant ones that were forgotten. How could they just disappear?
    I felt sad just imagine every person's story, like her in this video. But as I learnt science, I realised that we are nothing but a bunch of atoms combined to form an organism, we are just our bodies, nothing is really of value inside a human body, we are matter and we consume energy. There is nothing magical about our consciousness (we cannot even describe it precisely )

    • @terribletallrus6520
      @terribletallrus6520 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Christopher A We cannot describe it precisely. Isn't that interesting? What if there's more to it and all we need is time and more advacements in technology in order to dive further? Perhaps consciousness is somewhat collective or experiences are stored/transferred through DNA.
      Of course, not making a definite claim. But it's great to be open to the idea.

    • @christophera4527
      @christophera4527 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We cannot describe it precisely. YET * I forgot that word. Yeah, i think that with enough technology we will see further. Perhaps in 200 years, we discovered what consciousness is.

    The problem is, its not bad writing. There is no writing. Your thoughts, feelings, memories and experience does not amount to anything. That's what death is all about.

      This honestly sounds better in my head but... there has to be a meaning for this. There honestly is. I know it. Some meaning. This isn’t for no reason. Everything has a reason. It has to. We at least have to believe that. Like people don’t make movies for no reason. And there is a point to making them. Even if you only watch them once. They are in your memory, somewhere. Forever. And it could all mean something after you die. You don’t know. I don’t know. No one knows. Everyone is just guessing. It’s one giant leap of faith honestly...

    This was a brilliant slice of humanity - an exploration of how a person might manufacture a way to cope with the horror of existence - presented as an emotionally moving vignette.
    The comments, however, are an examination of how literal idiots, devoid of imagination or empathy, can invent a strawman argument in order to rage against a video they completely failed to comprehend. Sigh.

      If they didn't want to be called out, then they shouldn't have been so wrong. :P
      Really, it's a failure on the part of the video creators if they were unable to convey their message in a way that didn't lead to people paying more attention to their framing.

    This hit home for me. I've been intensely depressed the past two years, not about my own pointless existence, but the immense pain of those that have pointlessly died around me. People who did far more meaningful things. Heck, people who did far less. It's a lot to think about.

      Internet logic 101: If someone doesn't like something you do, assume they just didn't get it. Make sure you don't even attempt to explain it.

    • @MsEvilcutie
      @MsEvilcutie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry. This video is just a person who was forced to live with the reality of death for a while. She admits that her thinking is entirely out of necessity, because she needs to believe in SOMETHING(anything). We can usually get away with not thinking about it, but she couldn't, stuck in a hospital bed with nothing to do but watch the news(oh dear god, poor soul) This is one of the few people watching episodes that isn't really about an idea, but about a person. The video makes it quite clear that it's not trying to push her beliefs about the laws of physics or whatever.

    • @DeTruthful
      @DeTruthful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easy though for anyone who has a basic understanding of the laws of physics to know those beliefs are don't make any sense and it rubs people the wrong way and the fact that she isn't simply pontificating but instead using some psuedo logic similar to the logic of a flat earther (if any real flat earthers exist or is it a joke I don't know). But I think part of a lot reactions are more visceral reaction to what can be felt as weakness. Everyone thinks about death, sometimes feels lack of meaning some come to terms with it, some continue grappling. Most I would assume put it aside as you say, otherwise I can't understand how most walk around everyday as deeply invested as they seem to be about their lives. But I think for the people who think about it it's a knee-jerk reaction to a weak, dumb answer, somebody's logical mind folding in the face of fear, like she has never thought deeply and all of the higher functions of the mind melt in the face of everyday existential contemplation.

    But while doing recovery in the ICU... I had only one news channel and one lifestyle channel going on in loop to pass the time. And it was march 22.
    The terrorist attack in London made me feel like life was so fucking senseless

    This is deep. I have spent a considerable amount of time on the subject of death and human consciousness as well. As far as I can tell, our body acts as a carriage for our brains. Essentially, think of your brain as a type radio designed to tune into various frequencies. Light, sound, motion. All of which have specific wave-lengths. I believe that our consciousness resides on a wavelength and the brain in out body tunes into this wavelength. Essentially, when you die, your wavelength will continue until it finds another "radio".
