Alby Mangels would be proud of you mate! Very cool adventuring, done in the typical laconic Aussie way, with lots of polish beneath the rough exterior. I love your channel!
I was sailing a 39 footer in the open Atlantic and got caught side on by tropical depression mindy. Spent 48 hours counting lightning distance and holding on for dear life. Multiple gusts went over 65 knots. My best advice from handling storms is just go below and get as much rest as you can. Unless you can huff and puff and blow the storm away, your stress hurts only yourself. As long as you aren’t touching metal you need not fear for your health. What happens to the boat is a different story but that never comes before your life
Also dropping your swim ladder and the anchor enough so they are in the water adds grounding points that help create a cone of protection for the main body
good video, as usual. what most folks don't comprehend, is that clouds are often several, sometimes 100's of miles long. nad lightening can come from either end of a charged cloud. the last time i was struck by lightening, the storm was about an hour past us, and the lightening couldn't be heard, the lightening was questionably faint (questionable as to whether it was really lightening or not). Here in the USA many years ago, i was taught 7 seconds per mile (separation between the crack of lightening and the clap of thunder) Sailing temptress has a reputation of straight forward (forthright), educational video's. They did one of the best video's about lightening strikes and keeping safe from them,. not so long ago, maybe as many as 6 months ago.
Oh man! You really take it up a notch. I mean,,the way you set the cameras and hunt!!!? It freakin awesome. Love every bit of your channel!!! Hope we can meet someday. Thanks for taking me along.
Try this idea to fix your bent spear. Try heating it up on the stove. Not red hot. Then hit it with a hammer on top of something hard and flat rolling it until it stops rocking. That should work if you don't heat it then it will snap. Good luck let me know how it goes. Be safe.
We always kept jumper cables on the boat just in case the battery needed help. But, they were always attached to the side stays in storms and dangled in the water. Don't know if it helped, but we felt better.
This is currently the best sailing channel out there. A good mix of adventure and humor. Most of the other channels are just titty shows or boring leisure cruises.
Pete, So good to see this video.iits uplifting, & much needed now. I see the world threw you and Rick Moore. .I saw a picture of you with Captain Rick Moore of Sailing Sophisticated Lady. Or maybe I will do a bit for patreons.. any video that is out of order confuses too many people sorry so I can't even do a Tuesday video night for them separately...it is what it is.
You didn't show us the palm...I hung around for the full upload and anticipated some awesome carnage, only to see blue sky. Ahh well.. Appreciate all the views underwater. Nice shots.
Lightning is a really scary thing on a boat. No much you can do apart from just not being there. The thing that really scared me was not losing gear, but the danger of an exploding seacock. Also seen some pretty close calls. One time our neighbor took a direct strike. Anyway. I love your vids. Doing all the same stuff, but I can never manage a vlog like you. While you're in the area check out the Chargres river, and if you are Pacific side and brave enough the Darrien. Chargres has big crocs, caymans, and howlers
Should have ran a chain or piece of wire rope/cable from the main mast about 4 feet above deck over to the side into the water and made sure it was not touching the side of the boat by placing something like a life preserver or thick piece of foam as insulation. Many times this will route the lightning intense current directly through the improvised grounding of the cable/chain versus going through the boat itself and eventually the hull. I have heard of some boaters having a specific piece of cable just for this and even raise it up above the top of the mast with a spiky thing on it......kinda like what one would see in the city on top of light poles to deter birds from landing there and pooping. Just secure a small pulley/sheave as high as possible that will easily guide the lightning rod assembly to stay at the top and if your moving you could even attach a small bouy/float onto it at water level and let it trail back behind the boat. Works wonders to keep the lightning strike going the easiest path to ground/water instead of zapping through the boat and basically everything electronic with wiring on it's journey looking for ground which is always through the bottom or side of the hull usually where there is a metal fitting that goes through to the outside water and this is the main reason of severe damage to the hull, the metal that goes through to the outside water explodes due to it's very good grounding. You need to provide a good path of grounding well before the energy leaves the mast and begins it's journey through the boat which happens in a millionth of a second. That easy spiky lightning rod gives it a straight direct path to water and 99 times out of a hundred if set up right the energy will take that path.
I hope you have already fixed the grounding issues before this happened. At least place a jumper cable to the mast and have it attached to your anchor chain, then drop your anchor at least below your keel. Another warning from Almighty God. Obviously you survived it again or we wouldn’t be watching this video. Glad to know at least your still talking to your, Margarita. Stay healthy and continue to breath free. Aloha. 🌺🌸🌴❤️🇺🇸
It's got to be hard knowing about the time you got struck and lightning blew out sections of the boat bottom. I can truely understand how it can be a harrowing experience. Tough to go through. Crazy how devoid of fish it is there. Overfished or contaminated reef? Looked like quite a lot of algae coated reef. Hah, good one with the happy face anchor description!
Pretty sure the local population has harvested the parrotfish, which will let the algae take over and kill the reef. Sadly, most subsistence 3rd world fishermen don’t have the knowledge of how NOT to destroy their ecosystems.
WOW, Peter that is some awesome lightning footage right there. Haha.. I'm much like you Peter hardly normal ~:0) I love the way you cared for your dinner with the sun hat lol.. great stuff. There would have been some lovely photos as you were headed back to the boat after cooking your dinner on the Island of the clouds and your boat. Maybe that is an idea for you to make some extra $$ at times.
How much do Pineapples cost there? At the grocery store near my house in Florida, the USDA "United States Department of Agriculture" Pineapples are $6.63 each at that moment.
@@stanstanton6154 Yes, that is expensive. I found some "unbranded" pineapples at Walmart today, (Meaning they have no brand name so I have no clue where they're from). And they were $198 each. Glad that the teak on the bow is the same colour as the chain.
