  • If you ask Kevin what his absolute favorite style of Victorian architecture is and you'd likely hear "Gothic Revival". This style of home is one of the rarest in the South, and fine examples are few and far between. Our own Louise (The Little House) was a glorious Gothic Revival, and thought to be the largest example in Georgia. Today we are bringing you a glorious example nestled in the heart of historic Natchez, Mississippi.
    Better still, this beauty is set up and ready for you to pop in and start up your own dream Bed and Breakfast! This home has been operated as successful bed and breakfast and has been featured in a multitude of national periodicals. It's ready to go for your own self-employment dream.
    This amazing home has incredible Greek Revival interiors, and retains so many of its original features including gorgeous mantels, wavy glass and soaring ceilings. And the most unique find in this amazing home? AN ELEVATOR! "third floor, women's wear" So, enjoy climbing the original winding staircase with stuning rosewood handrail, or ride to the top in modern style.
    As always, we do not represent this home and make no guarantees in regard thereto. Complete info about the listing can be found by following the link below, or by contacting the realtor whose information is listed.

    Laine, I learned so much about the architecture of the Peter Hunter House. Your passion for historic preservation is infectious. Thank you for bringing these beautiful homes to our attention. They are so stunning and need good “stewards” to keep them vital.

    The first thing I said, when I looked at this property was I couldn’t live here because I am disabled, and I just moved out of a home that had stairs but now you tell me there is an elevator. That is awesome. Well, I still can’t live there because I’m not in the area and the home is still too big. Thank you for showing me this awesome home. I would love to remodel that bathroom and put the tub where the sink is and move the sink over to the wall where the window is and I think you could put two sinks there and then replace the shower unit with something more functional and prettier, but still place a seat in the shower. Thank you again for showing us this beautiful home. They made the best homes back in the day, and I wish we would build them that way again.

    They're destroying more older homes here. Breaking them into apartments, tiny little places.
    Thank you for this beautiful home.

    The house mentioned at 2:40. So glad it has been rescued. I am so exited for the future videos showing the restoration. I really liked that house and hoped it would find someone to save it.
    That weird corner sink, why? Just why?
    This house reminds me a bit of my grandparents house in Kentucky that I visited as a child in the 70's. It was a guest cottage for an antebellum mansion that was burnt down in the war. It originally had three rooms and a foyer and was build in 1856. The still used an outhouse, water was from the springhouse, the cistern needed resealed. It has been modernized but it was a horridly done job and looking at the house now makes me feel like my childhood has been stomped on.
    Things that I have discovered now, knowing more, the house did not originally have a kitchen. Either food was brought down from the main house or guests went up to the main house for meals.
    There was the lovely front porch going into a nice foyer. Two bedrooms, on on each side. The foyer ended in a great room (which has been turned into a large farm kitchen/dining area, not sure when). There was a back porch which they turned into an enclosed bedroom for my uncles. My mom and my aunts had the second bedroom and the first was my grandparents. They had ten kids. There was a rough cellar located under the second bedroom and an attic used for storage. I loved that house so much.

    Trefoil corbels!!!! The interior has much cleaner lines than I was expecting, but your explanations make sense. Here we have a physical record of the changes in style over a large portion of the 19th Century. So often we hear the term "Victorian", like it's one specific style that lasted 100 years. Thanks Laine, for always pointing out and identifying the differences. We are fortunate to see the many beautiful options the wealthy had back in the day, without having to choose between them.

    Oh, wow, that has got to be an Andrew Jackson Downing design. It just looks too much like his Gothic Revival homes. :D Those have a special place in my heart, even though I'm a wee bit partial to Tudor Revival & Craftsman personally.

    Beautiful home. I can definitely see it as B&B. The upstairs common room with walk-out balcony would be a great spot for coffee service and snacks. But, as a home, would need closets added to each bedroom.

    Charming house, Laine. Delightful and educative tour. Thank you. I love that you take the time to point out for your viewers the artificial, foam!, embellishment crown mouldings. I must say, I find myself cringing whenever I see heavy Victorianna furniture where the more delicate Regency sort might be more aesthetically appealing in these treasure houses with their gorgeous clean interior architecture.

I love Queen Anne style over there. These Gothic revival homes are beautifully simplistic . Love all your recommendations that seem to make so much sense too. Can't wait for the next video. Hi Laine and Kevin...first off I love, love, love your TH-cam videos and I hope you soon have a show on HGTV. I was in Natchez just two weeks ago, past by your beautiful little Pearl house, to look at a listing a few houses up the road. I actually came to Natchez to view a property on State Street, but it was sold just two days prior of my arrival. You are doing such a fantastic job for Natchez. I live in Tampa, and will return there for sure.

    I guessed the price exactly just from the outside introduction. ILess than 2 minutes in. Beautiful home. That’s a lot of “ taking down “ you mention for a home priced where it is. Stripped of its furnishings is another huge expense that could take months to replace to period . And the kitchen ? So it’s no longer a successful b&b, it’s an empty house you’d have to start from scratch after buying . 2 years ago it listed at $359k and didn’t sell. Hard to believe it’s now worth 49% more especially empty with the b&b closed. It’s a lovely home but wildly over priced in my humble opinion.

    What distinguishes this beautiful house as Gothic Revival as opposed to Carpenter Gothic or the like ? Does the gingerbread/lace detail at the front gable have a particular name ? I adore houses with that detail .

    • @OurRestorationNation
      @OurRestorationNation  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Carpenter Gothic is a sub-set of Gothic Revival. The most distinguishing characteristic of carpenter gothic is the use of vertical board and batten siding.

    Is the local economy of Natchez able to support the exchange by local hands of these mansions, or are these mansions being purchased by "out-of-towners" looking for a dream/retirement home located midst similar architecturally significant buildings/neighborhoods? Are the historic areas of Natchez destined to become home to mostly "out-of-towners"?

    • @OurRestorationNation
      @OurRestorationNation  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what we’ve experienced over the past year or so there is a combination. Some that were raised in Natchez are moving back but there are certainly some coming from other states as well. Most that we met fit right in though.

    I can tell you why people aren't buying those other homes - it's because they haven't taken Architecture, don't care about the different styles, and can't value or appreciate the stark differences between the styles to choose from. They don't understand nor care about the history... They just want a "modern family home" indicative of "the burbs." They see anything that looks (to them) to be "weird" or "well, that's unusual" and they don't get it, so they don't buy it either.
    This is a product of the lack of Architectural education in grade school, Jr. high, and high school, especially in private schools, because God forbid the girls might accidentally learn what's needed to make it past the jerk male Architectural college/University instructors who use subjective grading and "group projects" along with "I'm not your teacher, I'm the client, I can change the rules on you specifically, as many times as I want, and not care that I'm sabotaging your grades on purpose because you're female, and I don't want women to outshine me and take my job."
    The reality is, until males are required to prove they are lifelong feminists in order to teach STEM in colleges/Universities, and all the STEM subjects are taught by women only at every grade level in every grade school, Jr. high, and high school, including the private schools, everyone's just going to keep suffering for it. Who makes the final decision in house buying? Oh, that's right, the more effeminate one, regardless of the genders/sexes involved in the couplings. Every time. Houses with "weird styles" that don't look like they belong in the modern "burbs" are going to just perpetually stay on the market unless their owners give up and take them off the market. Ignorance is *not* bliss, people.
