The Battle of Passchendaele was one of the major battles of the First World War, taking place between July and November 1917. In a series of operations, Entente troops under British command attacked the Imperial German Army. The battle was fought for control of the village of Passchendaele (modern Passendale) near the town of Ypres in West Flanders, Belgium. The objective of the offensive was to achieve a breakthrough, outflanking the German Army's defences, and forcing Germany to withdraw from the Channel Ports. The offensive also served to distract the German army from the French in the Aisne, who were suffering from widespread mutiny.

I am 60 years old this year ... i listen to the words in this song while watching the video in silence. Good job Mr. Paul Gross and thank you for bringing this to us all in Canada and the world. RIP Grandpa , Canadian 223 and 221st battalion , and the 44th Vimy Ridge .

My paternal grandfather served as a Gunner in War 1. He was at Passchendaele and Vimy before that.
Came back to Canada 🇨🇦 in 1919 minus one leg and, probably, minus some mental health... but that wasn't much of a thing then.
Both my grandfathers fought in WW1. One was wounded at Paschendaele, and the other shortly after the Vimy Ridge battle. Both were at Vimy. They were 21 & 22 years old. Unfortunately, one of the reasons for WW1, all sides were itching for a fight. Such a waste. And, you know, we haven't made much progress since those days. Look at all the death and destruction going on around the world still!! Great song, and great movie. Wish they would make one on Vimy.
This video made me - a 29 year old man - cry. God bless those wonderful men. If I could only have had the chance to thank them for their sacrifices. Never forget them. Never!

I've just watched paschendale and I'm English and live in England we tend to forget what our friends did for our king and the Empire. It wasn't just England who lost brothers, fathers and sons we do forget this in England,so from a grateful British person THANKYOU for the sacrifice Your country has made in name of the King and your continued sacrifice in the name of HM Queen Elizabeth II may our friendship last forever I'm proud we share our queen with you and long may she reign over us. If we hadn't stood up to Imperial Germany and her uncooperative allies in 1914, we would have faced them alone some twenty-five years later when they were in possession of the beaten half of Europe and their former colonies, now in the hands of an undemocratic Central European Power Bloc, but with the likelihood of atomic weapons. We did what we did because we had the chance to stop it.

This song literally gives me instantaneous goosebumps it's incredible.
This was the most moving war movie I have ever seen. This song played at the end as the credits went by. I had tears flowing down my cheeks. I served 30 years in the submarine force and have been through a lot, this movie, jerked my feet out from under me. Just outstanding.
When I watched this movie in the theatre, there are three things that I have always remembered. One was the absolute silence at the end by everybody who was there. Nobody moved and said a word, almost as if they were two scared to be the first to do anything. The second thing I remember was that everybody sat through not only sat this song, but most of the one that followed. The last thing was that when somebody did finally move to leave, everybody didn't follow immediately. And when everybody else did leave, nobody talked to their friends and loved ones that had come with them. As a former serving member of the Royal Canadian Navy (Naval Reserve, HMCS Prevost & HMCS Cataraqui 1988-1992), I was proud to see the seriousness in regards to what they had just seen that those inside the theatre that night showed. I was very proud to serve and was very proud to carry on what those young men back in WW1 began, unfortunately they had to pay with their lives whether they came back or not...LS Duncan Dewar.

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful song. My great great grandfather served in the First World War; and he was unfortunately killed in the battle of Somme. Although I obviously never had a chance to meet him; I think of him whenever I hear this song; and all of the other Canadian soldiers who served in the First World War.
kirbyfan107 please accept my sincere condolences. My great grandfather was one of the few survivors of the Somme. He was Pvt Austin MacNeill of the Canadian Engineer Reserve Battalion.
My great grandfather (Pvt Austin MacNeill) was also in the Somme and he was one of the few to survive.
We will never forget, it's so great to hear people's thoughts and the family members that gave so much.

Look at them. Every man or boy in this, your looking at ghosts, there all dead. They went through hell on earth for us. If you Canadian all of these men were willing to die, to make sure you were born. I'm in tears, I'm watching men who .... We're willing to die for the idea of someone like me and you. Remembrance Day should be a day like Christmas, you don't work you see your family. But you actually remember all who fought in all conflicts Canada has been in. From the first farmer who got killed by a bear to Afghanistan. Directly or indirectly we all owe them our lives.
These soldiers were real Canadians. In the 21st century our country has been flooded by immigrants from the Middle East and Asia. It has in my opinion made being Canadian nothing. We have no similar views. Some of these people from Iraq and Syria that come to our country believe in Sharia law and the Asians that come in believe in socialism and like most immigrants from 1995 on believe in handouts from the government. With all this immigration. Being Canadian no longer has a meaning, we are now just a bunch of people thrown onto a vast Pine Forest aka Canada. Socialism is now rampant. Big government is now what everyone wants and Capitalism which is far better than Social ism is now being taken out of our countries beliefs. Capitalism is what gave us cars, TVs, Computers etc... Capitalism promotes hard work and creativity. Where as socialism is based on free things and it doesn't in courage risks that help grow our economy, it doesn't encourage competition since the government controls most industries. I hate to say it but Canada is no longer the Canada that I used to know and love. Heck Im a Canadian Infantry soldier and dont feel proud or patriotic about the country I am fighting for....

I belong to a small branch of the Royal British legion each year we hold a schools remembrance parade on the Friday before armistice day 11/November at our new parish memorial which was built by volunteers We have in the region of 1000 children from Schools from all over Milton Keynes. Attending which each child is given a cross of there faith to lay in the memorial grounds I am laying a wreath for all our friends near and far who joined us in both world wars and conflicts God bless you all and thank you for your service.
Just watched this movie for the second time after reading about it. No words to describe. I love my life, our parliamentary system, and my country. These men and women who served are a massive stepping stone which helped create this civilized society I enjoy so much today.....Though they probably never knew it back then.

Beautiful song. my mum's grandfather died at the Somme. her first husband in WW2, we have to remember why they died & the sacrifice they paid so it never gets wiped from our History.
What I loved about this film was that it was in NO WAY anti german.
I had a problem with the main character stabbing a surrendering german soldier in the opening scene. I instantly lost all respect for the MC and began to have doubts in the movie. Not happy with it. The ONLY part of the movie I like is this credits scene....
You need to understand the story that Paul Gross is trying to tell, and the reasons why the soldiers of those days did what they did. If you still can't afterwards, then you should ask yourself who you are and who you want to be, and why because they did what they did for you.

My great-grandad went to war for the freedom of the world in 1914 and came back four years later, founding a small town in Nottinghamshire and a family that endures to this day. Paul Gross did a wonderful accounting of Paschendale. Although the story line and romance were fiction, the events the story was placed in were true. It's a DVD I'm glad I purchased. Gross's song, cowritten with David Keeley is a haunting tribute. Beautifully performed by Sara Slean. When I first entered the Health Care field in 1980, I had the honor and privilege to assist in the care of several WW 1 Veterans. Truly a remarkable group of men and women. Answering a call to fight thousands of miles from their homes, they weren't the first to have to fight on soil not their own, but they were the first to fight in those in such a large number. The saddest thing about WW 1 to me, was the numbers that lost their lives simply because of command staff that couldn't grasp the changes modern weapons brought to a conflict. From Pershing on down the line, they couldn't recognize that Napoleonic charges were a thing of the past. Modern Artillery, Repeating Firearms, and numerous small technology changes dictated evolving tactics. Generals from both sides of the conflict failed to recognize what these changes wrought, and as a result of that failure, thousands upon thousands died struggling for a few hundred yards of worthless mud. The Gallipoli (Dardanelles Campaign) Fiasco really makes that point.
Grant them eternal rest O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon these brave souls. Amen

Can't help remembering my grandfather. Nivelle offensive, Paschaendale, Villers-Bretanoux & North Africa in WW2. Twice injured in WW1, discharged totally & permanently invalid but conned his way into WW2, injured again.
My great grandfather fought during world war 1 as a german soilder.
Then he was forced to join the german army during world war 2 he was wounded fight to stalingrad.
Let us never forget those men and women who gave their lives for us. May they be at peace now.

My great grandfather served in the Belgian army in WW1. He also took part in the Battle of Passchendaele. He almost never talked about. He was shot in his foot and missed some toes, wich made him limp for the rest of his days. It's a shame we Belgians, unlike the english (and commenwealth) and french or americans do NOT TAKE pride in our "particitpation" (it's not like we had a choice, germany suddenly invaded us) in the world wars. In Belgium we tend to forget it and if anyone metions the Belgian participation, it gets mostly shamefull or mocking reactions. Which is sad IMO. I understand the Belgian way of thinking. There is "no pride in killing other people", but does this mean we have to forget our history. Belgians do honour the British (including canadian, anzac and other commonwealth support) and French heroism, and they are right. We indeed owe the Brits. But we Belgians also fought in the trenches. I don't think Belgians should ever forget we also had an army and for a pretty small and "weak" nation, we stood our ground very well and we'd put up a pretty decent fight against the "jerrys". This makes me proud to be a Belgian, although I am a minority in my own country.

My great great granddad fought in WW1 and he was gassed twice, he was lucky to survive but he came back with severe PTSD. Shell shock.

Doing this at the Talent Show this year.
I visited the battle fields and war cemetries this July (2016) the centenary of the Somme. You have to see the thousands of graves in real life to get some understanding of the madness of the great war.
david mccormick I went on a battlefields trip with school around France and Belgium for both world wars. Visited places like the Somme, paschendale, D Day, point du hoc, etc. Whole thing was very moving. And when you've been on tours like this really makes movies like this appreciate more the sacrifice those men made.
my great uncle william denby 10th battalion duke of wellingtons died at ‘Passchendaele' 20th sept 1917,95 years ago today ,he like many has no known grave and i prey one day he and they will be found

i visited the Ottawa war museum and they did a nice museum piece on Passchendaele
it was really amazing to walk on the walk ways it was made of of mud and wood and little bits of guns and helmets stuck in the mud
