  • Well...this is a video I said I would never make! BUT!!!....after reading comments on some of my TH-cam videos and seeing the interest that members of the Keep Creating group have in making money from their art, I decided a lot of people could find value in what I am about to cover.
    In today's video, I will show you how much I made from using my art on Merch By Amazon, KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), Gumroad, TH-cam, Patreon, and Amazon Affiliates in December 2019!
    As someone that does art full-time as a living, I hope my experience can help you make money with your art in 2020! This video could have been a couple of minutes long, but I really felt the need to address a lot of points and questions that many of you might have. If you are interested in earning money from your art, I encourage you to take the time and watch the entire video!

    Question about TH-cam revenue. Is that just from add revenue or are you getting sponsors as well? I create from paper mache, I have a TH-cam channel as well and my following has grown quite a bit, but to date I’ve never come close to that amount in a month. One of my goals is to get TH-cam successfull

    • @BeeJayDeL
      @BeeJayDeL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s ad revenue. Sponsored videos have nothing to do with the monetization reports on the YT side- that’s something you arrange separate from the platform (between you and the company sponsoring the video.)

Many people will benefit from this if they are willing to do the work that you have made it clear needs to be done. Just as a heads up, if you approach it as something just for "extra money" on the side, chances are pretty good that is exactly what it will end up being - just a couple of bucks here and there. To make any kind of significant and consistent income from it, you'd have to put in significant and consistent time and effort into it.
      Obviously, if you're really OK with just a handful of bucks a month, all power to you and do that. Just putting it out there for people who may be considering this but think they'll rake in hundreds or thousands monthly with 0 effort, and just doing what they're already doing (hyper-focused on the art itself, completely ignoring the business aspect of it).

    People should understand that this guy is a MASSIVE outlier. I made slightly more than this working full time in the arts in all of 2019. This was the year I took a part-time job out of sheer necessity at age 40 in order to make ends meet, simply because working 60 hours a week as an artist was no longer feasible. I love everybody's optimism in the comments, but please stay realistic. Not everybody is a social media star, and quality work alone is not a guarantee that you'll get there. Ever.

    • @BeeJayDeL
      @BeeJayDeL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree with you...quality work alone is not a guarantee that you’ll get there, but at the same time...you are the reason I did this video. I do not use my “social media star” status to drive sales (I urge you to watch the live video that I did today to help you understand that point.) It makes me sad when artists are locked into a certain way of thinking about art. Based on your comment-there are so many avenues and possibilities that you are not taking advantage of. Look outside of the box that you have been put in (whether by society or by your own idea of what an artist is/should be) and search for opportunities. The possibilities in this day and age are endless...having a negative outlook is only going to guarantee that you remain in your current situation. Stop making excuses, take a self-inventory of what you could be doing better, and implement some changes. I wish you the best of luck and really want you to succeed!

    • @otacon1024
      @otacon1024 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're saying he's an outlier (and he is), but you're not thinking about _why_ he's an outlier. You say it's because he's a "social media star", and for the sake of argument let's say that it is. Do you think he became one randomly? Through luck, genetics, God's gift, or some other unspecified advantage or privilege he has over you? No, he's here because he put in the time, effort and steps required to get here. "Social media stars" and brands aren't born, they're made gradually over time.
      You didn't specify what you're doing in terms of how you try to actually monetize your art, but just judging by your attitude towards it I can make an educated guess. You're either:
      A) treating it as a job and actively trading time for money by doing things like commissions, or churning out new works and selling the originals, probably locally (in your town or area)
      B) creating new work and uploading it to some website/marketplace where people can buy it as prints or on products, but not treating it as an actual business with a brand, aesthetic, target audience to cater to, marketing needs, etc. Just creating, uploading, and hoping it eventually sells.
      If you're doing A, it's an exercise in futility and you're better off just getting a job.
      If you're doing B, shift your focus on the business aspect of it for a while instead of being 100% focused on the art itself. Because like you very correctly stated, "quality work alone is not a guarantee that you'll get there". It doesn't matter how good your art is if no one ever sees it. And no one will ever see it if you just upload and hope people find it; you have to actively put it in front of them. And it doesn't matter how many people you put it in front of if they're the wrong people, ie. not the target audience you're catering to. Basically, don't try to turn art into a business, run a business that happens to sell art.
      Can't give you more specific advice without actually knowing what you're doing at the moment and what you tried so far, but suffice it to say it can definitely be improved if you just take the time to think about and research how, instead of deciding it's not doable just because you didn't manage to do it yet. Which is ironically the actual main reason that he's an outlier when 95% of people fail - he simply didn't give up before he had a chance to succeeded. Success is built on repeated failure - you only lose once you give up.

    • @vivanecrosis
      @vivanecrosis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Little I just learnt what the word outlier means! 👍🏻
      So the thing for me is the example of all the different platforms.
      I can only imagine the amount of hard work that was involved in some of this.
      Also he did state that December is a boom for sales as expected. People like to treat themselves and others in the holiday season.
      For me this is just a nice little insight/example of what IS possible. Maybe not probable but totally possible by all who put the effort in!

    I just checked out your website. Great work! But a question: Your site looks mainly like a portfolio site. In this video, you said you no longer do commission work, but the site seems mainly geared toward commercial illustration & design. I guess i thought there’d be a whole online store element, or at least more front-page links to your products & merch. Is there a conscious reason for this, or is your site now more of a second priority to your other sales venues like amazon, etc?
    PS: this video was very inspiring, THANK YOU! Ive been illustrating for years and this is kicking me in the butt to launch my own brand like i should’ve done from the beginning, seeing that its really working for you. Thanks again!

      @BeeJayDeL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, you are right...my website is mainly a portfolio site right now (haven't updated it for awhile.) . More than anything, it serves as a way for people to get in touch with me through the contact form who don't have FB, Twitter, IG, or a YT account set up to comment on videos. Most of what I sell on Amazon is geared towards specific niches and not focused around myself or a single brand. That's where a lot of people make the mistake starting out. I like to cater to multiple interests and you can't do that with a single brand which is why I talked in the video about research/knowing your customer being key. Hope this helps!

    • @BeeJayDeL

      No...Merch by Amazon is Amazon’s print on demand platform. You upload designs...Amazon prints them and sends them out as orders come in! Totally hands off.

      Thanks for watching! It's really hard to put a number on it since I will sit and draw/research stuff as I am watching TV at night. Since this isn't client work, I don't keep track of billable hours which makes it difficult to give you a ballpark number. You will put in more hours towards the beginning researching, getting everything up and running, etc. After awhile, some aspects will run on autopilot, but I always suggest to continue grinding.

    Good Video, but it really would have been 100% better if before starting each different platform earnings you had have had an about 30 seconds display of samples of your work on that platform. this is massively good of you to break down earnings. some concerns i have: 1) i wonder if the saturation point has passed for this type of passive income, esp. amazon related? i have a friend who was trying to make a go of buying stuff cheep, boxing it up, and selling for profit on amazon. she watch a ton of vids, went to seminars, and wound up not making much $, possibly because by the time dudes are making YT vids, the party is mostly over. does that make sense? kind of like etsy became. at one point it was Great for artists, but became a giant and now anything you try to sell is one of a million items, all waiting to be found. 2) the crazy dominance of amazon in the world, in consumer purchasing, art-mercy creation income, and hell, i'm looking into AWS server certs... making me worry about the amazon monolith. but, that's just a general worry.

    • @BeeJayDeL
      @BeeJayDeL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be saturated but it really comes down to what niche you are focusing on. That's where the research comes in. Just want to do a dog t-shirt? Yeah, probably not going to be seen. Have to look for/identify the opportunities and put in the time/effort. Thanks for watching!

    what about average annual and what would you consider the time of year to be your lowest revenue?

    • @BeeJayDeL
      @BeeJayDeL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lowest revenue is around May for me (this might vary from person to person.) E-commerce and retail wise, January is notoriously bad (right after the holidays, returns, etc.) but January is already on par to come close to last month’s combined numbers if the current trend continues. As far as average annual, some of the streams of revenue from my art didn’t start until we were already well into the year...and will continue to grow as I add more. I can keep you updated though! This is a fantastic video! I have seen a LOT of artists who have become successful in their artwork but don't ever really seem interested in leveling with their audience on how well they are doing, or how they struggled to achieve where they ended up. It makes it seem impossible to imagine making an actual living with art. It isn't information we are entitled to, naturally, so I can understand a lot of them not feeling like that have to share that info; they don't! But it does help SO MUCH to know realistically, from a number standpoint, what could be possible to achieve.
    Thank you for sharing this info with us. It does inspire.

It is encouraging to know that working on it pays off and can really turn into a living as an artist. What a great motivating way to start off the decade!

    I really appreciate this video and it doesn't seem like you're bragging at all. I've been wondering about different revenue streams and I'd love to learn more about stuff like MBA and KDP. The biggest thing that makes me nervous is not knowing what the taxes look like, for when you have to pay in. Is there a rough estimate you could hit us with? Thanks again, man! Love your work!

      Glad you found the video helpful! To be honest, there are so many variables that go into figuring taxes (filing status, number of dependents, itemized deductions, other income, etc.) it will be wildly different from person to person.

    I like the idea of killing my clients.... I mean... ending commissions :) lol
    on a serious note, I think that's probably a good idea for me. It's far more rewarding to draw what I want and earn from it rather than draw what other people ask for.... i'm going to look into it more seriously this year. great video.

    Brought up the same way in regards to income BUT...people were asking, a lot. So not bragging, just answering legitimate questions. 💜

    Thanks so much for opening up that info to us. I know there's a big stigma for it, and I appreciate you letting us know. I would love to see some follow ups on this, such as how you developed the draw for it and built it up, like you mention near the end, and I'd LOVE to see a break down of doing taxes. That's one of my biggest concerns when it comes to going on my own, which I am hoping to do this year. SO, I'll be paying attention to a lot of your content over the next few months. 😁
