- In this video we take a standard PS1 console and modify it with a MM3 Modchip. We show the process involved in carrying out the mod and how to strip down the console.
We then put it all back together again and make sure it does what we want it to do.
This console was purchased as an untested unit, So first we need to make sure it works ok.......
The Sony Playstation 1 is a home computer gaming console, Which came out in 1994. It is a disc based system, Which had main competition from the Nintendo 64 & the Sega Saturn.
This system had good success in the market and is one of the best selling consoles ever made.

I remember the guy who chipped my ps2 when i was a kid. He was the closest thing to James Bond ive ever seen
🤣 love it.
Same here! I had a neighbor that had every gaming console imaginable. He told me that if I purchased the new PS1, he could mod it to play any game that I wanted. He would make games for me for $10. 13 year old me thought he was some kind of wizard 😂
@@BLADES1320 haha ik right, the guy that did our PS1 run it like a clandestine drug OP. Big gates and doors locked. I think the fear of piracy swat teams was real back then
@@BLADES1320 🤣 love it.
The guy that did mine used to work at a video store and had access to internet plus all those video games that people used to rent back then. He charged 80$ for the modchip plus he sold ps1 games for 5 $ and later ps2 dvd games for 10$. Every kid in our area had his cellphone number and when we couldn't reach him we used to call the video store and ask for him. He delivered games at your doorstep must of made a fortune during a span of ten years.
i remember people renting PS1 games from blockbusters for 1 hour back in the day lol
Ha, Yeah. I was only talking about blockbusters the other day. Now ours is a kaspas desert place.
Brings back memories.
Did this when i was like 8 years old just to play games from another region.
Ha, Excellent. Nothing like a bit of nostalgia. 👍👍
I can't do this kind of thing myself, but I love watching people who know what they're doing. Thanks!
I am glad you like it. Thanks for the comment 😀
I chipped over 500 playstation consoles back in the 90s. used to charge £10 LOL
@@Elberto71 ha, excellent. Love it
Played destruction 2 so much
Yeah, love that game. Still play it now. 😎
thank you for this video
Thank you for taking the time to watch it and comment.
It is really appreciated. 👍
I was chipping PSX's back then, it changed over time and different motherboards revisions came along, most mod chips were just programmed pic controllers as well and later on, Sony didn't bother with a heat shield.
sorry, im new to this. how do you know where to solder the wires to? also what kinda wire do you use?
No worries.
If you google mm3 PlayStation 1 modchip, you will find images with solder points.
Hopefully this helps.
thanks, is this also specifically for the mm3 mod chip or can it work with custom ones?
@@Meroubaa to be honest I am not sure. I don’t know if they solder in the same points as the mm3.
Sorry I cannot be of more help with that.
This is really cool but i always asked myself if the classic swap metod is so bad for the console health to justify this type of mod, i mean, this is clearly an easier way to play backups but the classic method also works.
This mod is easily reversible, If required. 👍
Put freePSXboot on a memory card and leave it in slot 2 of the console. It gives all the functionality of a modchip and more
@@waynetemplar2183 yes I did that after searching for ways to boot backups on my ps1, it's just so simple and versatile!
@@waynetemplar2183 Thanks for this information. It gives viewers an additional method, To get the same results. 👍
I have a PS1 in my loft which I modded to play backup discs which must be getting on for 30 years ago. Unfortunately I can’t remember a thing about doing it and your video didn’t remind me of it either. I’m worried now I’m going senile. I definitely had the skills to do it then as I was a computer hardware engineer.
I’ve also got my Amiga and an Amstrad 1512 stored up there, or was it a 1640? I can’t remember now, the one with the EGA display. Oh blimey, I’m getting old now.
Ha, nice one. I had an Amiga a1200 when I was younger, still one of my favourite systems I had.
Question, I'm kind of slow. How do you know what the correct soldering points are when you are installing the chip?
If the chip doesn’t come with a wiring diagram, then they can be found searching online.
I found the one for my specific chip online.
Where can you order the mod chip and wires from?
I purchased this one from eBay.
After install this kind of modchip, is the PS1 able to play NTCS games from america?
And fit this modchip with PS1 model SCPH-5502?
@@holgi895 mine will run the ntsc discs, however my tv won’t support ntsc signal. So it looks all rainbow effect colours on the games.
Does it work with yugioh forbidden memories or it will show the software terminated screen?
I am not sure to be honest, I have never tried it. I will see if I can...
I was Trying to mod the PS1 SCPH-7501 followed everything but the motherboard has broke
I tried to mod it using the mm3 modchip it went wrong the motor spinning counterclockwise and it’s no longer working , it happed the same with another motherboard for SCPH-5501 I had , I do t know if it can be fixed? Has anyone had the same issue ,?
@@once4ever993 I’ve not seen the issue myself. However, I would check over the connections. You may have a short somewhere, or wrong solder point on the board.
Hello sir, I'm allowed to ask about the PS1 which has mods in your video, whether installing the modchip for PS1 in your video requires an application program for programming a modchip which is used to run a game that you will burn, or it doesn't need to be ready to use straight away. to burn a cassette???
I saw the same tutorial as yours on Mr Mario's TH-cam channel. but in the video there is using an application to program the PS1 modchip, do you use that method and I have a video link for the channel on mr mario :
th-cam.com/video/UM_Vyg-5QN4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hjjsNzN7cl1vfato
So this is a link sources videos
because I have an original PS1 console that uses an optical drive that can still run only original cassettes and no additional mod chips and everything is clean. and I want to install an additional modchip tool on my PS1, either the fat series or the slim series, so that I can play cassettes by burning and can also run on original cassettes so that I can unlock all regions on the PS1. and also I want to make PS1 burning cassettes so I can save my money on both the PS1 Fat and PSone Slim console series
Hello. The mm3 modchip that I purchased, was already pre-programmed. So no need to do any other mods to it.
It is ready to fit and use back up discs.
I purchased it from a seller on eBay.
try to play a copied game and load disk2, wont work.
To be honest, I have never tried to do that.
I will give it a go, At some point.
Most mods are not 100% compatible on everything they run.
But on the most part, They run games with no issues.
