For those inexperienced mechanics here is a tip, when a spring is pushed from both ends it is COMPRESSED, when a spring is pulled form both ends it is under TENSION, the narrator does not know this. Plus they omitted an important step when they mated up the over drive section to the main case, there are a couple of bolt holes which go thru the main case and if you don't put RTV around the threads it will leak
Thanks for the in dept info. I've never work on a transmission with my bare hand before in my life not even changing the fluid, since 3 days ago now i'm full rebuilding a 42RE all on my own with only google and youtube.
I've rebuilt those Chrysler overdrives since the inception and I've always injoyed having them on my workbench 👍 Edwards brothers TRANSMISSION since 1977 😀
2:36 Oooh! I know what that is! That is part of the adjustment for the front band. Your locking screw on the outside of the trans pushes that puck into the front band so when the cylinder pushes into a lever the band tightens up. 🎉🎉🎉
Appreciate the time you took to make this video and you were very helpful with giving me an understanding of how this works and functions. Thank you guys very much
Thank you for this video, even big name youtubers don't give the 46RE enough love when they come across them. The major reason for failure with this transmission is poor maintenance... if the bands aren't adjusted on schedule they'll never survive, what happened here with the anchor falling out is what happens if you don't adjust the bands over the life of the transmission, its gets too loose and falls apart usually getting stuck in the parking rod and usually preventing the truck from shifting into park. If you catch it in time before the drum gets scored you can get a slip in band from PATC and replace the band while the transmission is still in the truck, its just a #*%@& to crank the band down to torqe spec with it still on the vehicle. Usually this problem happens to people who buy these used because the previous owner who bought the vehicle might have done oil changes and kept it up nice but never had the bands adjusted because they wanted to avoid the dealer or something. Very important on these older dodge vehicles that's often forgot: Band adjustment Grease the front end ABS owners - Getting the ABS pump bled by the dealer (due to DRB3) a normal bleed will not fully bleed the system on these older Chrysler ABS systems and can be dangerous so I thought id add that.
I think there's specific times in the manual that I don't remember but its every other oil change I think. its always adjusted to the same spec. @@---RON----
2 of the the transmission mounting bolts, will fit (in the holes. you used to pull the pump), simply: slowly screw them in (alternating) will pull the pump with no tools except: a socket , ratchet and two of the transmission mounting bolts .

My 46re has been acting up its cold can drive it for a few mile then drops in neutral have to turn it off and back on works for a few minutes then does it again
Sounds like it's low on fluid. Put the parking brake on, shift into neutral, and let it idle for about a minute. Then check your fluid levels while the engine is running.
Yeah, it's not as easy as one hope's. .. I've been rebuilding my transmission and have had defective parts to deal with, clearance specs that were out on brand new parts and all sorts of stuff to deal with. I'd love to know if this transmission worked as it should first time in and out of the truck?
When I was removing my oil pump to do the seal, the front set of clutches fell out of place. Is there any way I can get those back in without pulling the whole transmission? I'm about ready to sell this thing
Don't understand how at the beginning of the video the master mechanic mentioned he had done this several times, like 100 or so. Well, how did he forget so many steps on re assembly. The shift linkage TWICE ? Just curious, but overall a pretty nice presentation. Thanks !!
Guys, can you please tell me what that part is that you found in the oil pan, kinda had the shape of an arrowhead and where it goes (2:10-2:14 and 2:32). I found the same part in my pan when it started having problems shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I still want to see the transmission installed, working, shifting up and down, overdrive and whatnot? I rebuilt a 46re multiple times and still fucked it up. No channels show it built and fully functioning?
You missed the part where you show us how to measure the base adjustment for the line pressure adjustment bolt. I currently have low line pressure in my new 44RE there isn't a specific video that shows how to adjust.
Great video! Did this transmission come from a 4WD drive vehicle? My transmission is from a 2001 Ram 1500 5.2L 4WD Truck which I think has a 42RE. Looks the same though. Is there a difference?

Should be fine. Just remember to check the Neutral Safety Switch. I had to do a rebuild instead of a simple swap, all because I pulled a junkyard transmission with the wrong NSS port. Everything else is interchangeable tho.
After completing mu rebuild i notice that my output tail shaft does not spin freely it seems like its locked in place. In the ransmission bench video it spins freely. Any advice? Looks like im going to take the tail housing off and see why its not rotating.

That’s great to hear! It is a different animal, but definitely doable if you are patient. We got the rebuild from OregonPerformanceTransmission.com. On their site they have the base kit and you can select what parts you want to add to it i.e. steel plates, bands, etc.

This is supposed to be a comprehensive tutorial video which in my opinion it is not. First of all you have to explain what every piece is and what it's function is as you disassemble transmission. Also did not explain the clearances on reassembly and how important they are, they also didn't explain the wear in the tail shaft case where the overdrive is.
My transmission is leaking from the rear seal. I changed the seal and its still flowing. I don't understand the seal I bought from the dealer i need help
