I like how you approach travel as a learning experience, immersing yourself in the history and engaging with its people. Your willingness to learn and check your own biases, is refreshing. For that, I'm rooting for you and wish you much success on TH-cam.

I grew up in Hong Kong in the 1980s, and I had absolutely no idea about the walled city back then. It was only a few years ago that I started reading and learning about it. I guess I had been somewhat insulated in a lower middle-class family living in a typical lower middle-class neighbourhood - not rich, by any stretch of the imagination, but we had what we needed. I didn't know much about how the other side lived.
I haven't been back to Hong Kong in about 5 years now, but the next time I make it back there, I plan to go and see the walled city park.

Getting the estate agent to let you see a place to rent was a simple but genius idea. I’ve always had the idea of going to Kowloon and filming this then going to Quarry Bay just as you did but I don’t need to now 😅 all the videos on my channel are about the walled city so this was a treat to watch thanks mate nice video 👌🏼

Hi Jack, very informative video, I wondered if you could have mentioned Jackie Pullinger, the Christian evangelist who arrived in the walled city in 1968 I believe and still remains in Hong Kong now.
She wrote a great book "chasing the dragon " about her ministry to all in the walled city.
She was famously interviewed a few times by Alan Whicker the tv globetrotter.

Well done for visiting the site of Kowloon Walled City! Its history is indeed very interesting. It was once called "the deregulated by the three" - "three" means the Chinese, British and HongKong governments. None of the three authorities governed that tiny place (back in the first half of 19th centeury the north of Boundary Street in Kowloon, inclu. the Walled City did not belong to Britain yet, despite that it was the de facto administrator and ruler). In theory it remained to be the Chinese emperor's territory until 1898 when Britain took over the whole of Kowloon and New Territories (i.e. the city of HongKong as everybody knows ever since).

I’m just a student and never lived or witnessed the walled city in my eyes, but I have watched a TV programme introducing the place, although it’s dense, dark, dirty and dangerous (ok that’s unintentional alliteration 🤣), I’ve heard that the former residents described that the people get along well and it’s very harmonious, they also unite together and stayed strong, but yeah, indeed the living conditions are horrible and unhygienic, they remember when they’re kids they run around in this narrow maze, and get out very quickly to afraid getting lost
They had some good memories :)

When I was a high school student in the 70s, my school was located in Kowloon City which was not far away from the walled city. I went to walled city once for lunch with my classmates. The place was crowded and we walked through some narrow corridors. The residents were indeed very harmonious.

When I waas a kid, I used walk past the outside of the Kowloon City but never realise the seediness of it. You should watched the new HK movie Twilight of the Warriors : Walled In , it's about what is happening inside this Kowloon City which is a really fascinating!
And yes, flats in HK are very very small in average. The one you viewed is relatively modest in size!

gotta remember 7.5 million people here and space is at a premium, a hell of lot of new flats are being built starting at 200sqft upwards. Want a house, its gonna cost ya 16 grand a month sterling upwards!, even 200sq ft in a new built aprtment complex is gonna be well north of 1000 quid a month. hk is utter nuts, but been my home for 10+ years, still fab tho

I live & work in Hong Kong, arrived 24 years ago. The prison - when it was still active was opposite my office building.
The big tree in the prison courtyard has always been there. It is referred to as the hanging tree. When the area was being converted advice was requested on Feng Shui - cutting the tree down. It was advised against for several reasons and that’s why it remains.
There are some great bars and restaurants in the former prison building.

I'm an American-Briton who grew up with the best of both worlds in the U.S and U.K, I'm also of Middle Eastern and Eastern European descent on my Dad's side, whereas I'm a mix of English,Scottish and Welsh on my late American born Mom's side.
I spend a lot of time in the Middle East(Western Asia) actually, I was recently just over there for a period of almost three months and will soon be returning for another almost two months primarily for personnel family related reasons etc.
My late Mom visited Hong Kong and mainland China way back in the 1980's when it was all a completely different world to what it is now along with various other neighbouring nations within the region etc.
I've long wanted to visit not only Hong Kong but mainland China and some of it's regional neighbours for as long as I can remember really.
Anyway I see you're a Geordie and NUFC fan huh? I'm a big Liverpool fan with a big soft spot for Scottish football(my team in the SPL is Glasgow Rangers).
The opposition supporters I seem to have the best bond with are by far Geordies, class acts all round and by far some of the nicest people I've ever met after Scousers and Glaswegians in my opinion.
There's a British born TH-camr originally from Manchester based in HK called Sam and his channel is called "Hong Kong hoods" unfortunately he supports MUFC but he's a great guy!
I do TH-cam myself actually and I'll leave you with this pal, the South China morning post has a video on their YT channel about the old walled city where they speak to former residents etc, whereas across the water in Japan there is an arcade where the old walled city has been masterfully recreated, they've even gone as far to import trash(rubbish) from Hong Kong!

There's nothing traggic about the Walled City. Basically back in 1860 when the Empire took over Kowloon as well, the Chinese kingdom didn't want to give up the Walled City, and the Empired respected that, but then the Chinese kingdom was overthrown, and then no one controlled the city until early 1990s.

I have lived in both Hong Kong and Singapore and I’d choose Singapore hands down. Towns and housing is planned to ensure there is a park and green space 10mins from anywhere u live. Trees line the footpaths and effort to plant greenery is everywhere. Housing blocks are intentionally built to ensure space between each block. Also renting is ensured that Hong Kong’s infamous cage homes will never happen in Singapore.

Also, it wasn't really a "British built affordable hosing project". It's built by private company, probably Local Hong Kong company. But yes, housing was very affordable at that time. People with a stable income used to be able to save up and buy those in such a central location.

My apologies, you're right it was actually one of Gibson's essays that he wrote this in. Although the essay is about Singapore, he talks about his experience flying to Hong Kong from Changi Airport. I've taken the extract here for you:
So I avoided eye contact, straightened my tie, and assumed the position that would eventually get me on the Cathay Pacific's flight to Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong I'd seen huge matte black butterflies flapping around the customs hall, nobody paying them the least attention. I'd caught a glimpse of the Walled City of Kowloon, too. Maybe I could catch another, before the future comes to tear it down.
Traditionally the home of pork-butchers, unlicensed denturists, and dealers in heroin, the Walled City still stands at the foot of a runway, awaiting demolition. Some kind of profound embarrassment to modern China, its clearance has long been made a condition of the looming change of hands.
Hive of dream. Those mismatched, uncalculated windows. How they seemed to absorb all the frantic activity of Kai Tak airport, sucking in energy like a black hole.
I was ready for something like that …
I loosened my tie, clearing Singapore airspace.

I was fully expecting to see a US project alike inside, full of drugs and crimes, only to find out the apt is rather decent. :) Nonetheless, why didn't the HK government spend some money to rebuild the place and improve people's quality of living??? Thank you for sharing this side of the city

Its a difficult problem I'm sure. One note about the apartment we visited, this is a full empty suite which the buyer could then subdivide into múltiple tiny apartments or even a dormitary/Cage home

How come you only mentioned brothels, casinos, opium dens, and dog meat stalls? Did you see that they had a lot of various types of factories and unlicensed dentists too? The dentists were actually licensed dentists in Mainland China who couldn't get a license in HK. So they are not scary dark alley kangaroo dentists.
