Electric Bike or Electric Scooter: Which is Better for You in 2022?

  • I have had the opportunity to try out many Electric Scooters and find that in a lot of cases they are exceptional in many ways. They're light, they're usually cheaper, they're compact and super easy to ride. So I thought I would try out some electric bikes and see which is better.
    On a chilly winter's day, Melissa and Michael and I tried out both an E-Scooter and an Electric Bicycle. I must say the ride on the bicycle over the bumps is much nicer (especially the bridge with wooden slats) and I think for longer range commutes where you have a safe spot for storage at home and at work then an e-bike could be a good fit. For me however, I work from home and the bike storage area where I live is ...less safe. As a result I need to carry the electric scooter up the stairs and it's a lot lighter than an e-bike. Overall I find the scooter easier to work with in a city...I can roll it around a grocery store, ride it to soccer practice and if I'm visiting friends, just fold it up and carry it and leave it safely stored until my departure.
    Which do you prefer? Electric Scooter or Electric Bicycle?
    I'll be reviewing some E-Bikes in the coming weeks :)

    E Scooters are best. Almost no maintenance. Almost nothing to go wrong. No snapped spokes, no buckled wheels, no gear adjustments, no chain jamming or snapping cleaning, the list is endless. EScooter win hands down.

      @@noformstyle Yes, the scooter requires no exercise. That's one of its advantages. You should go to a gym to get proper specific exercise, instead of relying on whatever random exercise you happen to get as part of your commute.

    I've had my first ebike experience in NYC using rentable Citi Bikes. I fell in love. And so my search has begun... great video btw! The only drawback to the ebike is the possibility of a sore behind after long rides... but I guess I could purchase a softer seat. The e-scooters would be a probably greater experience but it is just so different and the city roads can be tough. However, my back side would be happier.

    Tim, oh man you better watch out the naysayers of either bikes or scooters may come after you!! I think it is tough to say OR for bikes and scooters. I think the strong points of both are different enough that if someone can afford it, having both is the way to go. Bikes tend to be much more efficient, using a lot less battery watt hours per mile ridden. Good points about tire size, comfort, portability, and security. Now we just need a bike that is built to hold a scooter on its back rack with a battery shared between the two.
    I go with a bike every time from a recreation standpoint but I like exercise. Good work on your channel!

      So many questions I have, but before spending the money on an Ebike, could you rent one for the day and do a test run to see if it will work for you?
      You could do a run to work from home and see if it's not too far.
      I did 40 Ks to a soccer game (roundtrip) and it was fine...you'll get in better shape for sure :)
      IF you decide to get an ebike do ensure you get one with a large battery so that you can use it on your travels to work without range anxiety.
      Hope this helps :)

    Hey there! I'm in Victoria too! Any suggestions on a really big guy? I'm 6'6" in bare feet, but 6'8"with shoes on, and hovering around 300lbs. I was in a Bike Accident resulting in losing the use of my left Leg from the knee down. Tried riding a bike again but having no control with my left foot, it kept sliding off the pedal. Right now I'm using an Electric Wheelchair that gets about 20 km per charge, but I'd like something that goes even farther, like out to U-Vic. Since you're such an expert, which models would you recommend to carry a big guy like me? I've been watching lots of stuff on TH-cam and heard good things about the Appolo Ghost which can carry up to 300lbs, and the Appollo City Pro which can carry up to 330lbs (so me plus a helmet and a back pack of stuff). I see you're on the Songhees area. Could we meet sometime? Better to see them and try them, than to buy one and find it's not my size. I'm always worried about the Handlebars being short and can't extend up far enough, but I'll never know unless I stand on them! Thanks for having your site so I've got someone right here in Victoria I can talk to! Have a great day!

    If I was more of an adult I would probably have an electric bike, but I'm not. Stand up electric scooters are much more fun to me. Bike riders are not really friendly to scooter riders around here it seems, probably because they are hunched over a contraption of historical design, with their wrists and perineum taking up much of the weight their feet are designed to hold, while I'm flying by them on something which, by comparison, is a magic carpet.

But most streets. Yikes. Have to keep your wits about you. I have an Ebike that I love. Fat tires. Considering an escooter for my university daughter. To get from her apartment to school and then class to class at UofT. Just a little shy re safety. Since you are standing. You can always do a flip on a bike but any thoughts from your perspective. Is seated better than standing from a safety perspective.?

      ultimately it comes down to storage I think.
      If you can park an ebike in a secure spot then it's probably the way to go.
      If not and you have to carry or bring it inside for security then the footprint is so much smaller on a scooter.
      Hope this helps...I use both for soccer, tennis etc...but it's so much easier to just grab a scooter (like I just did to get food for my daughter) than carrying a big ebike down three flights of stairs :)
      Last point...there is a smile factor...when I ride my scooter I seem to smile more :)

  • @MrTwostring
    @MrTwostring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you have any thoughts on this? The use case I'm considering is a college student who will need occasional personal transportation. The school is at the top of a hill - and it would be nice to have an ebike for the trip back to campus. The question then becomes storage - and so I start thinking about a folding scooter.
    In New York State, scooters and ebikes are basically treated the same as far as the law goes - so top speed will be the same for us either way. The scooter would be legally limited to 100 lbs, which, I believe, is a very heavy scooter!
    The question at the front of my mind is range - as you mentioned, it's better with the bike because you can choose how much assistance you want. The student would have to save enough juice to make it up the hill! Center of town is less than 2 miles from campus - and I could see someone driving a few miles around town before turning back.
    The hill, according to Google Maps is something like a 330 foot increase in elevation. For the same money, do you think a scooter could do 5 or 10 miles around town with enough juice to climb 330 feet?

    • @TimsElectric
      @TimsElectric  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MrTwostring
      Lovely to hear from you.
      First consideration is the climate. Winter for example here in Canada can be brutal. New York State, less so...but you still get a dump of ice and snow from time to time.
      But assuming a more temperate climate or fair weather riding only then you're right to think about storage/theft etc.
      However riding in the rain on an ebike is more pleasant and safer than riding a scooter.
      Next consideration is weight of the rider. If the rider is light then a single motor scooter will suffice 10 miles for a Uscooter should be just fine.
      If the rider is a big guy like me then a dual motor scooter is important for distributing the effort and longevity.
      Next is maintenance.
      A simple scooter like a Varla Pegasus would certainly work for me...two motors....I have one and love it...it gets me up and down the hills with ease.
      Also the campus climate and attitude towards scooters vs bikes vs e-bikes
      Also what are the roads like....bad roads due to salt/ice winters aren't so hood for small diameter wheels.
      Last consideration, is which does your future grad like best?
      Why not send me an email (link in the channel description,...if I say it here the bots will bombard me :) )
      I'll be able to help :)

      @@TimsElectric - Thanks. If I have more specific questions, I may circle back and email you. Lots of the details you bring up are still up in the air. I did find some more info in the meanwhile and it seems that 30 miles range is not unheard of -- but these tend to be on the 50 lb scooters.
      There are a few different campuses under discussion. One is a very easy walk from town. Another has regular bus service from campus to town. The top choice is a moderate walk... but there's that hill!
      I think I will email you.

    In my experience scooters are cheaper, faster and can be kept inside your apartment. If you live in a high theft area, scooters are a great option. They are also easier to bring inside a train or taken on an Uber. Ebikes are more comfortable for longer distances and can carry more things. They are also safer than scooters and can be ridden in harsher weather. It really depends on your lifestyle and living area.

    Ebikes are better cause they have bigger tyres and you don't feel the bumps on the road, also you are sitting down rather than standing up in an awkward position, BUT they also cost more and are harder to cart around in your car. It all depends on what you want to use them for? A shorter but fun ride is great on an escooter, however, if you want to get some exercise and be comfortable in the process an ebike is a better option.

      thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree with some of your ideas but much prefer the ride of standing on a scooter to that of sitting on an ebike seat for longer runs...maybe I'm different :)

    When it comes to security scooters outperformed ebike on a ebike if you leave it outside for more than 1hr most likely will get stolen. On scooters it needs a key plus a card activation and cellphone activation something bike thief cannot do. Also bike thief some of them never rides a scooters before that's a plus ➕. Also you can carry extra batteries for scooters for longer range.

    100 pound e-bikes? Ridiculous. Every one I've looked at is under 60. I've owned and ridden both for almost 20 years, not just "tried" them. Even though I'm in a major city, an e-scooter has too many tradeoffs for me. After more than a few minutes, my legs get tired from standing in a fixed stance. I've got a great seat on my e-bike and have pedaled it on multi-hour rides without discomfort. Try that with a scooter. If a car cuts me off, I can come to a panic stop far faster on my bike than on a scooter. If you run out of power, it's a pain to scoot yourself home, while pedaling a dead e-bike is only marginally more difficult than pedaling a regular bike. As for your statement that you can weave in and out of traffic on a scooter and ride it on the sidewalk, both practices are inconsiderate at best and at worst outright illegal in many communities, including all of New York state. Sidewalks are for pedestrians, not scooters.
    You don't even seem to really want to ride an e-bike. You want to ride a sit-down scooter. You barely do any pedaling at all in the video. That's not riding a bike. That's riding a motorcycle or a moped.

      I wonder how the durability and impact absorption of big wheels with spikes and a big frame could compare to a flat stiff platform with tiny rigid wheels.
      I am also guessing escooter gear-boxes must be smaller with smaller and more fragile components.
      Then also tiny tires MUST wear out faster than tires 5 times their size. And be more expensive due to less availability.
      I ask because you because no one mentions this and you seem to have plenty experience.
      Thank you!
