    Hey friends! Forget the plants I’m going to make a Sohum Soil bed for myself. What do you think?

      Should I use a seed starter or go straight to the sohum?

  • @theamazingthunderlips9387

    Rock at the bottom of the pot just take up space and make your pot size smaller and does not help with drainage. You'll get a Perched Water Table.

    Anyone else here use a seed starter like coast of maine? Or go straight to the sohum soil?

    • @HappyHydro
      @HappyHydro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I do hear that Sohum runs a little hot for seeds. We recommend starting them off in seed starter if you are transplanting them, the Coast of Maine is a great choice. If you don't plan on transplanting, you can take your container and fill the bottom two-thirds with Sohum and the top third with a seed starter. That way, by the time the plant reaches the Sohum, it is mature enough to handle all that it has to offer!

      @@FarmerHatBeard I sure will. I contacted Sohum a few months ago and they sent me an email with your video. I was using their method for my autoflowers and had 3 out of 6 seeding die. I believe your system is much better. You mentioned you have been doing this since 2014. I'm going in all the way with 9 plants. All autoflowers from ILGM, 3 Blue Dream 3 Sour Diesel, GSCE and Northern Lights. Thanks again!

      Weird. Mine never had issues straight from seed... And my plants have thrived and done amazing in sohum. Even amended it a bit with some pearlite, kelp meal, guano, recharge, mycoz and gypsum and just trichome city. Grew in much smaller pots then im normally used to even. Kinda took my by surprise

    I’m using sohum, haven’t added anything but my tap water which is like 300 ppm, and my run off water was at 8000 PPM!!! I was shocked so I checked with 2 meters and it was right. My plant looks like it’s suffering from nitrogen toxicity about a week into flower and my leaves have the claw terribly. Not sure what to do to fix it.

    • @HappyHydro
      @HappyHydro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no! To immediately address the issue you could transplant them into a cut-down sohum mix. If your transplanting them into the pot your blooming in try putting 1/3 pure sohum in the bottom of the pot and 2/3 your cut down sohum in the top.

    • @nickywilliams3076
      @nickywilliams3076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You cant use tap water it should be RO, your sending the soils nutes out of waxk by adding the extra minerals etc

    • @mikestanley1979
      @mikestanley1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ro water

    • @burnswhenpees
      @burnswhenpees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      35 ppm is the sweet spot, but unless you're fortunate enough to have access to that readily, then ro is your option. Using ro, it's safest/easiest to water from the bottom unless you're on point watering. You don't want runoff...defeats the purpose of living soil.
      Worth half a penny, but there's my 2 cents.

  • @burnswhenpees
    @burnswhenpees 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not sure how beneficials survive once dried in the bag? Same as being disrupted through dry spots from uneven watering practices. Also, read the below answer where you advise adding FF products in bloom, for farmers that are capable of maximizing their plants genetic potential. Believe their only omri listed product is Big Bloom. Good nute for micros, but not much of a bloom booster.
    Trying Sohum currently, but plan on using Coast of Maine teas during bloom. Up potting from 1, to 5, then to 10 gallons and see no need for anything other than RO water, and maybe organic calmag (TPS) if using white LEDs. And, to the grower using stones at the bottom, make sure they are properly ph'd.
    Don't wanna high jack your thread, but my time on this marble is dwindling. Been at this for over 30 years, and want to pass any/all knowledge to those looking into organic cannabis cultivation.
    Would love some info on the beneficials surviving while dried out. That's my only concern regarding an outstanding product.

    • @HappyHydro
      @HappyHydro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding the beneficial microbes surviving while the soil is dry - I'm not a soil biologist - but it's my understanding that the microbes go dormant and begin reproducing again when water is reintroduced. There is a plethora of studies and articles about this topic - This is one of them I referenced: academic.oup.com/femsec/article/65/3/400/517652

    Can you supplement CO2 without adding amendments?

    • @HappyHydro
      @HappyHydro  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could just just add the C02 but your plants will be photosynthesizing at a higher rate and might run through more nutrients faster than normal.

    Are Lotus products ok to use if you are trying to go full organic without artificial nutrients?

    • @HappyHydro

      Hey Clint! So Lotus nutrients are not OMRI certified organic so if you are trying to grow 100% organically you would want to stick with OMRI certified products.
      *From their site: Specifically formulated for medicinal plants and comprised of 14 unique raw, natural ingredients including 11 essential macro and micro elements as well as raw materials including seaweed plant extract, humalite, and plant protein hydrolysate. Will i need to top dress or use a booster mid bloom or will it last 2 month veg and 10 week bloom?

    • @HappyHydro
      @HappyHydro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might not last the full 10 weeks, depending on the size of the plant, but we recommend supplementing during bloom, starting with small supplements to get bigger yields! Keep an eye on how your plants react and make adjustments as needed. If you're going to reuse the soil after a crop, then you'll definitely need to replenish the nutrients on a larger scale. Excerpt from their FAQ's.
      "The SoHum Living Soils® product is designed not to require any additional amendments. Adding some nutrients can hurt your plant (especially nitrogen)! If you add more nutrients you will take away the plant’s ability to choose the nutrients it needs when it needs them. In other words, you are force feeding the plant and reducing the benefits of the soil.
      If you cannot stop yourself from adding amendments (we know it is a tough habit to break!), then do it on a very small scale and be sure to test your results regularly to avoid an overabundance of nutrients that will hurt the plant’s growth. Just add water."

Something like a FoxFarm or Roots Organics would do. As far as how much, that would be up to the recommended amount on the bottle, your watering method, and how your plants react!
