Ummm. I don’t think you should wear a fisherman’s beanie if you’re not a fisherman. You’re a poser. also. No pea coats unless you’re in the Navy. No trench coats unless you’re in the Army. Same goes for bomber jackets if you’re not in the airforce. No denim jeans unless you’re a gold prospector or miner. No converse if you’re not an early basketball player. No polo shirts unless you’re a tennis player. Etc etc etc.
A big reason why the leather jacket was big in 70s rockstars was because the greaser subculture had just died which put a lot of second hand biker jackets on the market for cheap.
Functional clothing being appropriated and changing into cultural signifiers with time is always a fascinating concept to explore. It’s fun to think about what a 2020’s version of a biker jacket or even bomber jacket would be. Would arcteryx or some other function-first brand communicate something totally different 50-60 years from now?
oh thats an interesting thought! would your version of a 2020's biker/bomber be a functional piece of clothing for bikers/bombing pilots or would you take the classic design and put it into todays modern world? In regards to the latter one: I funnily ordered a few weeks a go an "aviator/bomber style" jacket made out of wool and with on purpose misplaced pockets & buttons because the brand tells a story of an apprentice sewist who kind of fucks up the clothes he makes lol
when thinking those biker gang in the west they hardly wear crosszip at all they wear patched leather vest , only good weekend biker wear crosszip, and perhaps highway patrol officer although in different pocket layout, basically the whole COOL BADASS image is created by that movie with marlon brando a very weird movie about very sensitive biker who really love trinket trophy his friend stole from random local racing event and gave it to him, and then he fell in love with local barmaid and ran away on foot being chased by angry mob of townies, and he cried his heart out behind some haystack or something, another movie is with Willem Dafoe as a womanizer and perhaps sociopath, and another movie with Johnnie Depp and another movie with John Travolta with people wearing leather dancing and singing... basically the whole thing is created by hollywood. real motorcyclist probably wear board racer/ cafe racer style more in the past. what I'm trying to say crosszip has always been moviestar or rockstar or simply stage costume, so one can't become a poser for wearing one
Intentions and context are always the key. We have detailed laws to prevent malicious acts such as dressing as a law enforcement officer to protect people from getting griefted. It is also illiegal in some parts of the world if you show up in public with clothes resembling certain historical extremist groups. It is understandable for people to view posers negatively, especially when they assume the posers enjoy the perks the clothings bring without walking the miles that some others have. But when it comes to cultural diversity, each group bring something to the table for the rest of society to enjoy. Gatekeeping is not helping the culture sub-groups to flourishing either. If you dress as a biker to signal you are a biker, on a psychiatric level it is just as malicious as dressing like a police officer and walking around the block. In contrary I can think of multiple senerios how a person can utilize biker pieces in their outfits without giving that signal. These areas shouldn't be black and white. An open mind and inclusivity will help each group to grow.
Gonna yell at some punks and metalheads for beeing posers, if they wear Perfecto's. I blame you if i get beaten up, wish me luck. 👀 Ps: In all honesty, they are great especially if you buy them vintage. Survives a moshpit and holds up for years.
haha good luck with that! In all seriousness, I think its totally fine that the meaning of clothes changes over time. I wouldn't accuse people wearing denim being posers so I think it's funny how the poser term is being thrown around with other clothes. But of course things get more nuanced when it comes to e.g. workwear clothes and certain aspects like wealth disparity and clash of social classes come into play
I think if you don't ride motorcycles, you shouldn't wear a biker jacket regardless of the historical and cultural connotation. I also style mine with other classy attire. Simple as.

"Right after inventing the motorcycle the motorcycle accident was invented."
