I am a child of the 80s.....I was in grade school when this song came out and we sang along just like with the other songs on the "popular" radio station.....it was not until I was in my 20s and listened to this song again that I not only gained a new appreciation for it, but I understood it for what it is: a call to revolution, a freaking revolution song! And it is a great song...

It's not a matter of a generation standing up. It's a matter of mindset. There's always people who sit on their rears until something affects them directly (then they may or may not "stand up" and do something, it depends on how much it negatively affects them) and those who have some foresight and get off their rears to do something about it. Too many people are comfortable to live life with blinders on until they get older (i.e. and start feeling the vulnerability of age) and become more aware of what they were oblivious to when they were younger. This concept isn't specific to today nor is it prophetic. It's reflective of how people are.

Well, I'm nearly 60 and back in November 1983, when there was, allegedly, nearly a nuclear war due to a Russian over-reaction to a NATO exercise, my flat was 5 km from NATO HQ in Brussels. Excuse me if I don't get too excited if Nth Korea and Iran who are comfortably out range might get the Bomb in the next 20 years. In 1983, when I was still in my early 20s, nuclear annihilation was a real threat, not a movie plotline like these days!

If you doubt me ask any Vet, from Viet Nam and they will tell you things they did and remember how to do. Walk long distances, no, carry heavy packs, no, how to set ambushes and use the enemies advantages against them as well their own weakness to their advantage. I always felt that this song had spooky overtones. I felt it when it would be played on the radio when I was a kid in the 1980s. It always gave me a premonition of what was to come in the not so distant future.
