This was in 12/75, by 12/76 4449 and the Freedom Train were in Florida. This video is a fantastic account out of all the archival material I have of this, I have nothing with the true sound. I truly enjoyed your stories from the West Side at the Sierra Seminar in 2018, thank you for all the uploads, Dr. Muff. 🛤️🚂
I posted this on another site, I'll do it again on this one. Out of Bakersfield, the pilot engineer was Charlie Krueger, the engineer on the 9389 was my neighbor and mentor, Andrew A. Smihula. Andy was working the LA-BKSF freight pool at the time and he and Charlie were the only two engineers in town who were still steam qualified. They ran Andy around 5 engineers to work the AFT. Andy said it was the greatest time in his career. He showed me his train orders and call sheet from that trip. He was cut off at San Fernando and ran lite to Taylor RH. When he retired August 1976, he gave those orders, plus his retirement train orders, to his son.
Aft 4449 replacement whistles are 2 the first whistle it's was SP&S 700 or second whistle 911's original Hancock 3 chime & third Hancock used on SP&S challenger whistle
The shade of blue on the AFT baffled Kodak--it was rendered a bit purple on Kodachrome (notice here?), but OK on Ektachrome. I sent them some examples and they agreed. Kodak figured the blue paint gave off strong ultraviolet reflections.
Heck no, bruh. It’s called a Hancock 3 chime whistle. H-A-N-C-O-C-K. N-O-T J-E-L-L-Y-J-A-M-M, O-R S-O-U-T-H-P-A-R-K! None of that is even related to this video!

The only whistle 4449 used in that shot was the 6 chime. The 3 chime wouldn’t be heard until the shot after.

The ATSF 6 chime was replaced by an SP 6 chime in 1981, before it was swapped with another 6 chime in the mid 80s, which was stolen in 1990.

American freedom train 4449 going to surfline to san Diego
Correction: the AFT would be traveling along the Coastline to San Diego. This happened long before the Amtrak Surfliners would become a thing.
#4449 was restored to her former glory painted red white and blue to pulled The American Freedom Train. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
