Who remembers the small train museum on the corner of W 3rd St. and W 2nd St. at the base of the Broadway Bridge? It was more of a place where old passenger cars were stored and then opened up to visitors on Saturdays. You could go in and walk through the passenger cars... today all the tracks are long gone and the entire area is developed and an apartment complex now sits there...

I remember, pre-Amtrak, when we would go to the various stations in Chicago. They were like railway museums, with so many train companies with their own car styles, locos, and paint schemes. So bland nowdays.

My grandmother’s house was 200 feet from the KCS mainline in Ravanna, Arkansas. This brings back memories of those days when I’d spend hours waiting for and watching trains. I loved those old ghosts.

I really enjoyed reading the comments on this video, I also remember the 70’s as a boy, I was born in Sacramento in 1965 and lived in Roseville when the Roseville yard blew up! That was insane, the house rattled forever it seemed. Then a year later we moved to Dunsmuir then Klamath Falls, OR. Dad worked for SP since 1965 and hired out of Oakland and retired about 12-15 years ago. I remember rural California just as seen in this video, everything then was a lot slower and wasn’t flooded with people. Then I consider how life is today for the people in California and it’s shocking how people tolerate all the garbage from the State government, not to mention how bad the illegal immigrant population has grown to, unbelievable. We sacrificed so much to build our country and State all to just gradually give it over to a replacement population. Oh well.

2:56 This unit (96-C) ran trains at the Indiana Transportation Museum for several years. It hasn't run in a while and right now it's sitting in a field with a few other former ITM units, awaiting eventual pickup and delivery to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. I'm not sure if they just plan on cosmetic restoration or getting everything running, but they've got a long way to go either way.

Some of the crisper and clearer '70s footage I've seen! The sound always adds so much too. The looks of the trains already had a lot more personality than today, but the sounds seem to even more so. So many mechanical bells, EMD 567s, and a wider variety of horns.

Amazing footage!! The sights of railroads in the past are always one thing, but the sounds are a whole different level. Also, I was frantically trying to track down the location of the shot at 11:03. Somewhere in the back of my mind I thought I'd been at that same crossing in recent years on a trip to Chicago, but I doubted myself on it. Turns out I was right, and it's on Canal St. It just struck me as odd that there was an at-grade crossing in downtown Chicago when I crossed there, but I assumed there were probably several more at the time of the video and the one seen here was probably somewhere else. As of 2021, it looks like the Cassidy Tire building in the background is still standing and doing good business. There's still quite a bit of crossing equipment there and even a mechanical bell still on one of the signals as of the 2021 shot. Edit: Comments That Aged Poorly. Street View is outdated and a high rise has been built where Cassidy was in the past few years. There's pretty much nothing historic left in that spot.

I lived and grew up with my parents backyard facing Airline Hwy Metairie Louisiana and Kansas City Southern track was right outside my parents backyard! I'm 59 years old so i got to see all of the old engines when they were in service including the F9 locomotives and man i miss those days! Locomotives back then had character unlike the ugly locomotives of today! The U boats and GP's and SD's were a common sight and even the old high hoods which i usually saw on the Central Ave tracks which was at the back of my parents neighborhood!

My dad worked for the railroad in the early ‘50’s in Chicago when I was a child. As our relatives started moving west, we would take several trips by train to visit, I guess he got special rates and first-class accommodations. I so loved those train trips: exploring the train, sitting for hours watching the country roll by from our bedroom, heading to the observation dining car for meals with linen tablecloths and silver utensils, running to the last car and watching the ribbon of rail speed by. Getting off at the longer stops and running to the front to look at, smell, and hear the drumming of the engines. The colors so bright and vivid. Cokes and snacks in the lounge car, and of course going to bed in a the upper berth and being lulled to sleep by the clickty-clack. That got me hooked on trains and model railroading.
