Does this work in the LEGO City? French Cafe Review

- Today I take a detailed look at the LEGO Icons Restaurants of the World French Cafe. The big question is, can it be placed in a LEGO city? The build was really interesting, but the back is incomplete and ugly - that makes it more of a shelf set. In this video, we take a detailed look at the set and then test fit it in the LEGO City!

I think you have 2 options, dont use it or fully expand it into a custom modular building
I’d love to see Bricksie expand it into a custom modular.
Agreed. Maybe integrate into the university somehow but it still needs a small modular setup.
Really like the idea of using it in the amusement park. That was my immediate thought. Epcot vibes for sure.
I was literally thinking the same thing.
Fully agree
Yep, this is a great option!
In Paris near the Eiffel Tower I’m sure there’s like a McDonalds built into the wall at the bank of the river, which is basically what your platform coverings are, so maybe thats an option; having it be part of your platform coverings and imagining the rest of the building is inside, like under the road or the upper platform
Or maybe it was London near Big Ben…?
I think it will appeal to people who collect books. This would be great on your bookshelf next to French themed books. Would be a great bookend. I collect both books and Lego and think this will be great together. :)
Because I work in the culinary industry, I’ll be getting that set as well any other restaurants of the world that come out.
Shocking that you get all these print pieces in this set, and $500+ UCS Star Wars sets get mostly stickers. I really don't get it.
@joeyost1603 - Said the same Exact thing on some reveal vids! Infinitely Agree! Wild to me that this is even a thing! Just dont get why they would even do that! Especially for $80! Just goes to show you that Lego Has No Logic! This Infuriates me Actually!
The easiest way is find a tall building on a corner that is not a corner building and just add it as a facade to the first floor of said buildings empty wall. And your done no worries about the ugly sides of two sets and you filled a corner!
I plan on doing this exact thing.
I think these facade type builds would look good in the amusement park, most amusement parks have these sort of themed building dotted around and you could continue to integrate this series into the theme park. in a like restaurant court.
“Fold” it and make it a little kiosk in the botanical garden
One of my favorite things about visiting HUGE cities is the diversity that you encounter. All different cultures combined in one area for all to enjoy. This reminds me of like your classic "hole in the wall" restaurant or coffee shop that has a special niche that caters to a few or many. This would be perfect for the back side of one of the Modular buildings that may not have as much detail and tucked away in a side alley or make it a Corner building by adding this to the back of it. It really offers a lot of options for stories in your city!
Imo it just looks off. It doesn't quite look minifigure scale; as if it's slightly squished together. It's also way too short and gets completely lost in that sea of large buildings.
So in short: Pretty as it is, I don't think it's a good fit for a city as is. However... It's a great parts pack with some gorgeous elements that can be used to create an actual modular.
Exactly what I was thinking 👍🏻
I like the look of this set, it really appeals to me. I don't have a lego city, and like the idea of building something that will be cheaper than a full modula, without all the inside stuff I don't need, but is still a really good facade, with great building techniques. I think it is a brilliant idea, will certainly be buying it, and hope there are more along this line in the future.
@bricksie I have an idea and a bit of a challenge for you! Why not build a public amphitheater in the new park and use the facade on the stage as a backdrop for the actors! People in the park on blankets sharing a picnic with a bottle of wine watching a play!
I think that you should turn it into a modular building and put in near the beach.
Use it as a facade like the fake buildings in amusement parks, or in the subway area if there are more coming.
I could see this being a great part pack. But I will definitely wait for it to go on sale.
I would love to see you modify this facade into a small modular style building, and you said yourself that you want to start working on more custom builds, so here is a perfect opportunity 😁
Those could work as bookends... or as perfect backdrops for those awkward small areas next to walls! Heck, they could even be used to create a Book Nook. I could see these creatively implemented into cities as small little cafes/shops. Kind of like the next step down from Mini-Modulars!
@ 11:13... Right side of the brickcross station looks like a perfect bare wall to place it! It could even replace/work as the hinge wall that already exists there.
I like the idea of the cafe in the Venice area like you said 👍🏻 you could adapt it and integrate it into a custom building ❤
Is it too tall to fit in the under ground ?as a themed French section or a cafe in an underground station 😊
You could also build it into a raised platform covering. That would leave the interior up to imagination and would take a lot less parts to make it fit in your city.
I will probably get this - it intrigues me, all the nice touches. I would consider it a frontage for a multi story dwelling, so I would probably do something in the same colour scheme behind it. Perhaps open the back. (Listen to me, all architect-like! It would certainly not be light work for me!)
I think it works but not as a standalone building. It should be incorporated inside of another building such as inside of a strip mall, a bookstore to go with the theme, or a grocery store/supermarket. That way you don't have to worry about creating a back for this "building"
It’s ideal for people with a city where the tables are against a wall. It could be a facade at the back.
This. Or for Bricksie's particular city it could be built into the mountain side
Should make a moc of it and place it next to the boutiqe hotel
I feel like this set is aiming for a hyper realism perhaps beyond the modular series. There are many new pieces, pieces in new colors, and lots of printed pieces for detail. Also the build techniques are nuts. Perhaps this sorta goes in tandem with the gardens of the world sets...which are also built slightly smaller than minifig scale
Not Minifig Scale, maybe BigFig scale LOL! Great parts pack an Technique pack only! Really dont like the Flesh color with that Green! Designed for a Shelf!
the scale seems a bit off
Definitely not looking minifig scale, maybe fit for mini dolls.
Use the / some parts, add more and build your custom French café.. This can be more beautifull and better in size
The amusement park thing seems like it might work. Maybe it might also work up against the left side of BrickCross Station?? Or maybe working this hard to make it work is telling you to leave it out. Square peg, round hole and all that
I may have a different idea for this set. I think it would look really well next to ro the Venetian houses. Not as a full building, but as the facade. As a coffee shop overlooking the canal. Instead of having the canal wrap around the buildings (as it already goes between them). This seems like the perfect size space too
In my opinion this set is not good. It’s overpriced, the light nougat is off putting, the scale is silly (especially the street light), the back is just 🤢 and no minifigures. The only redeeming quality is the printed pieces. Hard pass for me!
It could also work well as part of a little alleyway scene/strip of cafes and smaller boutique shops
I like the etched doors windows and book covers, those should be very popular for people to have for their designs.
I see it as a little cafe in an amusement park like you would see in the French Quarter at a Disney park, or by a park as a nice little relaxing cafe location.
Just place it with a very wide patio sidewalk out front with tables chairs and pink parasols! Now thats a Cafe
You could put it by your tudor mansion and paris street and create a little mini european area
I like the idea that it should be placed in the amusement park.
Use that as a start to a food court in the Lego city
Looks like you are missing two pieces on the left side of the front door, above the lamp. The pieces would be 1x1 curved tiles.
You didn’t do the minifig test. It is not minifig scale, it is larger. The chairs and lamppost give it away. You’d have to completely remake it to be minifig scale. This is a shelf display set. But, who wants that?
Put some lights on it and put it in the holiday village
In the amusement park it would probably work . Otherwise it’s a good parts pack to moc up a proper Modular . Tfs
i realy like the idea of it in the city, maybe up against a raised platform covering?
BRICKSIE IS THE GREATEST! 😑 I'll finish Sesame Street soon... It still hurts... Then I can work on the backlog, such an easy build... I just miss her so much it's been over 3 years now...
Simply put I don't care for this set but I'm sure it will be well received and loved by many.
Why dont u put a shelf on the wall near the city. So when they bring out more it looks like it’s looking onto the city.
I'm feeling increasingly disappointed with Lego's approach to these sets, with the average cost forever going up its about time they designed sets that look presentable from more than just one angle. At the very least these sets can just look plain from the back with a single color rather than looking unfinished and thrown together with random color bricks and zero effort whatsoever. I'm not suggesting they go full detail on every side but literally just pick a color and stick to it. The back of sets have gotten so much worse over time, almost like they want half the set to be an eye sore so that you'll have to hide it with something else. Imagine buying a star wars set and the whole bottom of the ship is just multicolored - That's the underwhelming sense I get whenever I see a set like this. Its not the lack of detail, its the lack of care & effort.
I imagine if someone applied to become a Lego designer, and they built them a model that only looks good on 1 side out of 4, that person probably wouldn't get the job. So why is it such a common flaw with the sets they bring out? Wheres the attention to detail gone?
The tilling is fantastic for in the park
I really like the cafe by the train station.
love your content, not sure if you noticed but you missed out 2 quarter round tiles on the top left of the door
looks great, and great ideas for that cafe I'm sure u will come up with a great spot or idea. Oh do u thing u will hang the up house and planes over your city like u had in your basement. I love watching your TH-cam videos.
Build the mountain over the back of it so that's a front wall.
What if you, looking at your set up, make the back side in front of the door all mountains. You could make them represent the Rocky mountains make the high and not block anything and orjust normal. Also I live 45 minutes from an amusement park called knoebles and it's in the woods basically shade is plenty. Just a suggestion,
I would use the idea and some of the prints to make your own modular like you did with the mechanic shop! Combines the best of Lego with custom skill
Why not build it into the mountain so it looks like the main shop is in the mountain.
Would the buildings fit into the brick wall below the residential area? That way it would look like it's built into the brickwork
no doubt someone will build a mod out of that. Question be how many copies to what scale size building ?
Happy birthday to ms Bricksie!
From a first look, this feels more like a diorama than a facade but I could be wrong and given your creativity Bricksie, you could find a way to make it fit into your city. With nothing in the back to go off of, I personally don't think it could fit into the city unless you can part out multiple ones and make it your own semi-MOC of sorts. Just my two cents though but the exterior looks excellent for what it's offering.
The set looks neat, but the chairs/tables seem oversized for Lego Minifigs.
How about adding a cafe to the other train station?
I don't understand why don't you rebuild those crapy looking modular buildings backs so that they would have same design as front, with windows and everything. Atleast where it is visible? This would improve looks from all angles a lot!
Maybe it would be nice to place it in one of the parks. You would have to make a back though...
This set is not the right scale for mini-figures - everything is a little bit too tall. Of course, you can modify that since it will need a lot of modifications already to fit into the city.
This is gonna sound very pretentious, there are some things that don't really need to be put in Lego cities?
I think by a second one like the boutique hotel build a custom interior and put it by the new building with the weird like angles and curves you’re working on
the back of it is horrible, judging by the price of it they could’ve at least added a layer in the back to make it look complete
Can you please do a tutorial on how to build your road with a bicycle lane?🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🛣️
I think I might just take the cafe part and see how it fits the backside of my boutique hotel- the color scheme is pretty much there
Ca ce bein! Missed out on the Parisian Café, Mediaeval Market Place and the Greengrocer! 😩 This has mass appeal, i think, they could have left the back open like they always do... Could use it as an entrance.
Would it fit in the narrow strip infront of the zoo. Like a tea rooms for ppl to get a coffee afterwards
Bricksie, together with your france street, against your mountain range, on the city side, near the Zoo, before that road ramp to the upper city.
That way their backs are facing the mountain wall, as if part of their inner rooms are dug out of the mountain.
And if you make it a bigger building, make it's roof a terras for the home above it, where the owner lives.
Ever watched Ladybug & Cat Noir?
Think that bakery(?), qua style.
In the amusement park for sure
Hia Jordan what would happen if you placed this building alongside the other little shops behind your beach?
I think Lego is spreading their wings too far with these. You can basically get anything made of Lego these days. To me, these are just a sad excuse for modular buildings. This is a type of set that can be designed quickly and sold quickly for a giant profit.
Maybe a shop in the amusement park🤷♂️
Could be good near the Trevi Fountain.
It’s obviously not minifigure scale, otherwise they would’ve included minifigures. It’s very odd and won’t sell well.
I just don’t like the colors they use. I definitely wouldn’t buy this set. This coming from a person who likes the smaller sets. 😢
12:22 you had a piece fly off the building. Dont know if you went back and got it or not
I like the idea of putting it in the theme park, but maybe it would have a nice place against assembly square too. It bould work with the little plaza by the canal.
Hi jordan maybe add it neer your venitian modular ...
Add into your zoo!! 😊
Ha ha, your obviously not from French Canada.
It's not a "cup cake" it's a mousse. Not a moose (Canadas 2nd mascot? Beaver being 1st) a mousse.
I think Bricksie just proved from inserting the Icon set into the city that’s it’s grossly overpriced. Since the restaurant is useless as a play feature, which is the whole point of buying LEGO.
i think just put in the boutique hotel
To me it feels like something you would find in a park.
Bonjour like the different elements it suits it there Happy birthday josee
❤❤❤
Making it a corner build with its entrance facing the coming angled road next to the train station. It has some angles already on the facade that would fit more naturally, the height would fit better and would require less build out
could also put it as part of a platform covering such that the "inside" of the building would be underneath the mountain (and so a facade-only makes sense)
If do you modularize it, would you give it full or half baseplate in your city?
Seems like this new line is for "experimenting" with new building techniques. Cool, but i dont know how many ppl are actually gonna buy it. Completing it with a custom back or a second set would look great in ur city👍
what if you just built it into the side of a bigger building, like a coffee shop in the lobby of a skyscraper?
I don't like it allot personaly, but I think you would need to double it in height ( ad a floor) and build the whole building like a modular .
The set is so ugly and completely overpriced
I think you could modify it to make a small cafe in your city, it would take little bit a work.
That set looks garbage.
Oh the. Backs cut of 😅 like that new warter fountain set coming.this must be a. New thing Lego doing now Thea's build but only frunt looks good
French cafe is awful nothing french at all !!!
Its lame in its original form, for 10 year olds
