- Super Mario Bros. Wonder is something Nintendo only gives us once in a blue moon: a completely new Mainline Mario title. With this game being released at the peak of speedrunning's popularity, Super Mario Bros. Wonder was bound to immediately be destroyed. Today, let's talk about how speedrunners completely broke the game in the first 10 days thanks to routing, as well as many fascinating skips/glitches.

I look forward to no nabbit/yoshi runs. It’s not cheating of course, but permanent invincibility is not interesting to watch for me. The skill of dodging everything makes things so much more interesting and makes you hold your breath because of the risks associated

Really hope Nintendo doesn't patch the world skips. They aren't hurting anyone and only make the game more fun for those who can preform it

@Nuisance_Bear Something could happen like with SMO where loading times were massively improved in a later version, which has skips patched like first moon skip. Stop being stupid

Not really. The drill both looks and functions very diffrently in galaxy IIRC

They probably feel different because of the gravity of the galaxy the power-up was used in.

The game is broken because it’s the easiest Mario game made which is super disappointing after Mario Maker 2 and compared to Tropical Freeze. It’s so easy it’s not fun

Cant wait for part 2 where runners already found an out of bound that leads them to an debug area where they do memory manipulation via ACE and then a stop n swop to warp to the credits on super mario rpg.
I sadly cannot take this game seriously due to patches being a thing. Potentially fixing bugs later. It's cool the first 10 days has been a wild ride for the game though.
I'm willing to bet people will their copies un-patched so they can speedrun it
@JumboDS64 the way the switch works, this isn't as easy since there's no way to downgrade. You need to upgrade to use the internet features that come with the game. You are forced to upgrade/patch the game without any easy way to downgrade or uninstall the patch.

I think I’m in the minority here but I don’t like glitched speedruns. They were cool 10 years ago but it’s just getting boring to watch. I’d rather see the skills used to beat the game as fast as possible and as intended. Maybe that’s why I switched from watching speed runs to watching more challenge runs..
Definitely minority, I want speed runners to use whatever they have at there disposal to get the best time, not a fan of limiting them.
It depends so much on the specific game and bug. Even if you wanted to be as strict as possible, there are a lot of cases where it isn't clear whether a particular behaviour is a bug or not, and there are popular games where it's impossible to avoid triggering them regardless of playstyle. Edge cases aside, there are examples where bugs have clearly had positive effects, like the creation of combos in Street Fighter 2.

With only one real skip i wouldn´t call this game broken
But it skips pretty much half of the whole game...
Most previous SMB games had intended ways to skip entire worlds, so it doesn't feel very broken in this context even though this time it's done using a glitch. World lets you skip probably like 80+% of the main game through intended methods.

I personally don't like speed runs with Yoshi or Nabbit. They suck the skill out of the game. I know I couldn't come close to the speed runners but I only played the normal characters (mainly Peach) my first time playing. After that I played a little bit with Yoshi and Nabbit and they just weren't fun. I can see them being fun for new and younger players but let's be real, Yoshi and Nabbit is easy mode on an already easy game.
I think there should have been more secrets that are impossible to unlock without power-ups, hence locking out Yoshi/Nabbit. I thought the secret exit from World 1 was like that at first (though to be fair using Elephant is still probably the easier method) but I later realized you can carry a snail shell to the end of the level instead, and there aren't enough cases even like this in subsequent worlds.

This video is great but the middle section isn't really about anything. You're just mentioning names and times without providing context for how the runs are being improved - like, you don't even explain why the players are doing the specific world order they're doing, you just mention that they're doing it and that ones preferred over the other. Why? How you described the out of bounds glitch should've been how you described a lot of other stuff in this video like world orders, preferences for different badges and use of different items. Otherwise this is a great chronology of the first week for this game :)

That's why It's split into two categorys, Restricted (No Yoshi or no nabbit) and Unrestricted (Can use Yoshi and nabbit) He stated this in the video
Hate the term broken being overused by the speedrunning community. If you can play a game through to the end and never accidentally encounter even a single glitch like I did, then it isn't broken.
