  • This sleeping monster amp lives again, thanks to Kevin of the Flores Amp Repair and Mod Shop. The Crate Stealth GT-50C, designed by Lee Jackson of Metaltronix, is becoming increasingly rare and if you are lucky enough to have one, you know how crushing the amp's ton is. Oh - also, as per the manual, (direct quote):
“Gain 2 : This allows you to add another setting of tube distortion to Channel 2’s signal, independently from the setting of Gain 1. The use and effects of this control on the signal are the same as those of again 1, IF a footswitch is being used. Otherwise the amp defaults to Gain 1 ONLY.”
So the gains don’t stack...Gain 2 is only accessible with a footswich...which lets you have basically a third channel that shares the preamp, eq and, reverb between the Channel 2.
I usually keep one close to zero, and the other pretty high with the preamp turned up to about 3:00. That way, I can have a nice crunch or a high gain setting with the footswich, but both are on Channel 2. I can roll my guitar volume back for a nice edge if breakup on the lower gain setting as well this way.
Channel 1 is very clean...like, pristine.

I love my Crate Stealth amps, they sound great and are fun to play! Lee Jackson ain't playin'! He is an amp master and made the best Crate amp in my opinion.

This is legitimately one of the best gain structures i’ve ever heard.

I have this same model. I’ve had it since 94-ish. I love it! It needs to get serviced & has had a lot of gig time on it! It sounds so amazing!

Thanks for the review of this amp.
Are you running it at 16 or 8 ohms as shown in the video?
I’m guessing 16, but I never have really understood that switch, and the manual doesn’t help clarify which way is which. My guess was always that the direction that you push towards is the way the impedance is selected.
    Thanks again!

      16 ohm I believe. The cab has 2 - Celestion G12H30 Anniversary's and 2 - Eminence 86-068-16's - X Pattern

It's too bad you didn't demo the clean channel. It really sounds good.

I bought that same amp from your peoria store back in 2003. It has the same volume issue. Very weak volume until turned up to about 1.5 or 2. Then starts blasting out of nowhere. Except now it needs to be turned up to like 4, which is way too loud for a bedroom amp. Any idea what the issue was with that particular amp? Mine was brought in to your shop for repair but was told "that's normal. It's supposed to do that." Glad to see you guys have a more competent amp repair guy now.
From what I understand, gain 1 on channel 2 is emulating the standard jcm800. Gain 2, I believe, is supposed to be like a Lee Jackson modded jcm800.

Yea no worries, you are not alone. My crate GT-80 combo did the exact same thing and it has the same components as the stealth 50 but without it being full tube but half tube/solid state. My volume jumps by 2-5 when only cranked just slightly above 3. It’s the pots that does that problem. I usually just buy another cheap crate amp for parts and take the pots from it to my better crate amp. They don’t last long and are stupidly rare to find to them separately. Better off buying a cheap 15 watt crate amp and using it as parts in case something happens to your main crate amp !!
