Hi Griffin. I am pleased you mentioned that the system was meant to be operated without a driver. This monorail system was plagued with problems from the first day. I think this is why many people my age are not confident riding the driver less Metro Trains in Sydney (maybe its just me). I know there is a concealed driver panel at each end of the Metro trains which can be used to operate the train manually in an emergency or permanently in the future. What an excellent documentary this is. Well done Griffin.

Driverless train systems are extremely safe. Far more safer than manually operated trains could ever be. As the 2010 monorail accident depicted in this video piece has demonstrated. 🚝 🇦🇺

I think it's just you, I have never met anyone who's refused to ride the Metro because it has no driver. It's been a blessing as the Metro operates even when there's an industrial strike.

The issue with monorails are that they're not off the shelve solutions so they are more likely to face issues and for those issues to be harder to resolve. On top of being more expensive to build and operate 😅

@@truedarklander the control systems are pretty much identical to any other driverless metro/train.

There are no monorails in Australia anymore, around Christmas 2022, I went to the gold coast. I was planning to go to sea world with one of the main things I wanted to do was ride the monorail, until I found out it was permanently shut down. However, the tracks were still there.

www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/tp/files/64241/Investigation-Report-Veolia-Darling-Park-Monorail-Collision.pdf At the time of the radio call the collision alarm had already gone off. The subquest testing showed the automatics safety brake was inadequate.

I know lots about the Disney Monorail Wreck.
For info go to 1994 Waterfall collision and look in the comments section.

Gutsy narration! But, when the host has all the knowledge, he can convey the script anyway he likes.
After the initial fanfare of the 1988 opening, Sydneysiders did not take the monorail seriously, as the route was only of benefit for tourists, the monorail was merely a novelty. Come the 2000s, the system was feeling very dated indeed.

@@AnnoyingAhhPyroUnit The monorail going concern was never ever economically viable as a private business. Passenger ridership forecasts were never met. This explains why the network was never expanded, nor the original 1987 rolling stock replaced with new vehicles.
The monorail blue track was always derided by Sydney’s architects, artists and civic leaders as ugly and ungainly. The monorail was merely a novelty for out of town tourists, nothing more.
Former NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell stated that the monorail removal was “good news for Sydney”. Farrell also stated that the monorail was “controversial”, “never been truly embraced by the community”, and, that the “NSW Government cannot justify costly upgrades” to keep the monorail operational.
