How I Find and Organize my Zentangle Patterns

  • I recently had a question about the 2x2” tiles that I use to show patterns in my videos, so I want to just show a few things about that. I didn’t mention it in the video, but I just cut these from mixed media paper. You could also cut them from any card stock paper. The pages that I use to hold my 2x2” tiles are called coin pocket pages, and these are the ones that I have from Amazon: www.amazon.com.... The tags that I showed in the video were a gift to me, so I don’t have a link. But there are several options on Amazon.
My video for the Tangle Patterns website tutorial is here: • Tangle Patterns Websit...
My video explaining the Art Raffle app is here: • Choosing Tangles with ...
Most patterns that I use can be found on the Tangle Patterns website tanglepatterns... or on the Musterquelle website: www.musterquel... The Musterquelle site is in German, but you can change it to your language as needed. You can also find step outs for the Zentangle Inc. patterns at tanglelist.com/, however it doesn’t have the latest patterns because it is no longer updated.

Thank you, Barbara, for a terrifically informative video. Had NOT thought about the coin slot pages for our Bijou tiles, and it was like a light bulb went on in my head!

I'm always interested in organization videos, Barbara. This is a good idea. I realized that the coin collector sleeves look exactly like the old slide sleeves. I used to have an old ungainly stack of those. I may still have them somewhere. Right now I've got all my tangles with stepouts in my Zen Tag Book, which is made up of 2x4-inch tags I can find here commercially at the scrapbook store and Joann's and Michaels. I do keep stepouts on the complicated ones. I've got one ring of Borders and Grids and another of Floral and Leaf patterns.

Yes I had so many slides! The 2x4” tags are also a great idea. My notebooks with the coin collector sleeves are getting big but I’m still adding patterns. 😊

This is how I store all of my tiles … by using photo sleeves for binders. Bijou fits in ones for slides, I have actually found 3 1/2” square photo sleeves, CD/DVD storage sleeves for Zendalas, and 3 1/2” x 5” sleeves for Phi. For bigger tiles you can get 5 x 7 or even full page. It works very well for me and I enjoy getting my binders out to thumb thru them. Sometimes I’m amazed at what I’ve drawn!!

I also love going through my old tiles and feeling amazed at what I’ve learned from Zentangle. It’s awesome to feel like I’m an artist!

I do the same thing Marilynne - I have about three binders filled with tiles of various size pockets. Such Great inspiration to go through and re-enjoy seeing and I also marvel that I Actually drew these. Who knew 2 1/2 years ago that Zentangle would develop my unknown skills. ❤❤

What a wonderful idea!! I love using binders to keep my various arts & crafts ideas - so far I have 24!!!! including Zentangle & doodles (it had not been used very often) I spent all of yesterday following one of your videos and made the coil tangle and others. I did it in my art book so it took awhile to shade et al but it was very zen sitting in the sun and enjoying the fresh air. It was my first and certainly more to come. Maybe on a scale of 2 x 2 it won't take as long!! LOL!! Thanks for your videos - so much better than crocheting a very heavy blanket in the hot sun!

Thank you for your kind comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the videos. I also have several notebooks holding my tiles. I have most in boxes now. 😊

Do you create your own Bijou tiles? Seems like many of yours are brighter white than I’d expect. If yes, do you punch them out, or cut them and punch corners, or …?
I was considering those coin pockets, but given the better ability to add to a stack, I think those 2x3’s with the hole punches are probably better for me. Of course, then I’d have to BUY them … decisions, decisions! 😂
I have looked at EniOken’s Art Raffle, and it seems fun. :)
When I first started with Zentangle, I did so on a black rectangular (5x8?) spiral bound pad, with white Gelly rolls (someone gifted those to me, so I used what I had!). I marked out six small squares on each page, to try different tangles. After a while I got tired of dividing them up by hand, so I made a cardboard template to draw my squares. It looks a lot like your printable!
Have you been following ZenLinea’s series here on YT? She’s most of the way through a series of 100. What I’ve really enjoyed is that she has done them on Renaissance Bijou tiles, which of course facilitates both shading and highlighting. Brilliant, fascinating, very educational - and undoubtedly great for her YT channel too! 😂
Thanks for sharing everything, and good luck with the upcoming family stuff!

Hi Dawn! As soon as I uploaded the video, I realized I didn't talk about how I create those 2x2 tiles. I use either mixed media paper or just card stock. The card stock is thinner, so it's easier to get in and out. I use a paper cutter, and then I have a corner cutter for rounding the corners.
I bought some sketchbooks, but I don't like the spiral binding, so I end up tearing the pages out so I can draw without having the spiral under my hand. I have bought large sheets of paper and cut my own tiles for some time now, but the Zentangle tiles are still the best quality.
I've been following Zen Linea for a few years now and I love her work. It's always gorgeous and I have really enjoyed her 100 Day Project tiles.
Thank you for your questions and comments. Have a great week!

Where do you keep your step-outs to complex tangles Barbara??

    • @notperfectzen

Hi Gwen. I keep my step outs in a folder in my file cabinet. I usually refer to the step-outs that are online, but occasionally will print them out for doing my practice.

Just starting Zentangling. Most of the videos show combinations of basic patterns. I need instruction on basics! Such as string, fescule, etc. Most of the tiles I see are combinations, or use these basics. I have searched youtube, internet, and some of your recommended sites. None of these start at 'the beginning'. Can you help?

    • @notperfectzen
      @notperfectzen  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Flo. When we teach an Introduction to Zentangle class, we combine 4 different patterns on a tile. But in the process of teaching that tile, we also teach the basics. An excellent start is the “Zentangle Primer, Vol. 1”. It teaches the basics from the people that created the Zentangle method.
There are some teachers who offer private lessons. If you want to know more contact me at notperfectzen@mail.com
