    This is really good. I love Mother 3. Lucas isn’t like most heroes. He is very relatable and his character development is endearing. Such a good game.

      Thank you! I love Mother 3 as well, and I couldn't agree more. Lucas is most certainly more relatable than many video game heroes- he both works as a "blank slate" for the player but with defining characteristics and a tragic story. Mother 3 will always have a place as one of my top games/media ever.

    I always liked how the MOTHER series approached people with "disabilities". Someone like Duster is just like any character. The fact he has a slightly broken leg isn't forced into your face as if the game is saying "hey look, we have disabled people too". It's just there naturally, you might not even notice it and most likely will forget about it. This is why I hate the idea of forcing characters that are representative of a minority. It ends up feeling like you put the character there just to be politically correct, which should never need to be the reason. Tony from EarthBound would be another good example.

    Mother 3 is undoubtedly my favorite game. Right now I'm playing Mega Man Star Force, and unlike Mother, the cutscenes makes me want to yell, "JUST LET ME PLAY THE GAME ALREADY!", which really makes me appreciate the near perfect storytelling of Mother 3 even more.

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I took Psychology 1 the first semester of my last year in High School (and I will be taking more when I start college this coming August), and hearing this interpretation of Mother 3, one of my favorite games of all time, reminded me why I love the game so much. I haven't played it in almost half a year, but maybe I should now. Thanks for this great video, man.

      Nihontendo You're the best for the really meaningful comment, I truly appreciate the kind words. They all really loved it and none of them had heard of the Mother series with only a couple having played Smash Bros! Everyone was impressed with the dedication and I actually got a lot of written responses back, super fun to read after the class was over and warmed my heart to see their reactions. If I find them I'll post their responses! Perhaps I'll make a video on it, and include online comments from people like you, you're the reason I keep this all going!

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** That is true.. at least they'll have EarthBound to play through x) I don't think any of them have or will be doing a run of Mother 3 though- there were only two gamers in the class I knew of and one had stopped coming to class a little more than halfway through the semester for personal reasons. I did capture the interest of a lot of different classmates though so who knows. I'm sure if they were interested enough to actually do some additional research on the game, there would be enough value in other aspects of the game to keep them interested. I did spoil the main story but even I am finding new things about the game I didn't know about, and considering my extensive research on the title I'd say that's very impressive on the creator's part. I hope if any of them were captivated enough to try it out for themselves. they would do it for different reasons, like learning of side-plots and gameplay mechanics.

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Looking back I shouldn't have given a number because I don't think their ages were revealed at any point in the game- an exact age all from fan specualation. All we know is that there was a 3-year time skip after the first three chapters, so we can only guess based on their appearance/mannerisms.

    • @phlash649
      @phlash649 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ThaneGaming Yeah, Ness is officially given an age in the guidebook as 13 so i personally would think he and Lucas are the same age. I guess he's canonly whatever age you want him to be *shrug*

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Phlash 64 I feel like you're closer in putting him as the same age as Ness. It makes sense, but yeah I suppose it's not a huge deal.
      I always appreciate the little details, but perhaps it's better this way in that any kid playing can relate more with the age flexibility- I'm sure many will automatically fit themeselves in Lucas's shoes. I know when I was a kid playing Zelda, I was so happy to learn that Wind Waker Link was the same age as me :)

There are core values that need to be addressed and in my opinion, shared with as many people as possible. Actually, it's rumored thag Kumatora is going through Menstruation, on her period, to best say.
    Which plays great on her being a PSI user as well as attention to Female anatomy. Giving small attention to it makes it's interesting.
    Why do you think it's only Kumatora that feels feverish or chills?
    Lucas learns something, but it isn't after a blast of lightning.

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +millieman76 Actually it's not rumored- the link between PSI and menstruation was revealed by Shigesato Itoi himself here: mother3.fobby.net/interview/m3int_04.html
      Though menstration is simply a comparison to the general portrayal in this game (representing the physiology of the human body) and not to Kumatora (or the female anatomy) exclusively. Lucas does feel feverish before learning a new PSI move like Kumatora. Regardless, it's super interesting and I debated including the fact in this video!

    That's awesome, good introductory analysis and breakdown. I've been thinking about doing a piece on how this game handles ideologies, and the underlying theme of the seemingly utopian communism and dystopian capitalism

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's a fantastic idea. The greatest aspect of the game is how many real-world dilemmas the game tackles overtly and subtly- you can argue one's importance over the other but ultimately MOTHER 3 has a lot to say and it's more than worth looking at all themes presented. I regret not being able to touch up upon the aspects you’ve mentioned, but it just reiterates the diversity for critical analysis. I certainly plan to revisit the game similarly but through a different main focus- I wish you the best in your own piece! :)

    • @sweetwheatsy

      Exactly; the versatility of the game is such a big boon, and, as you say, a lot of it is not directly plastered unto your face. And thanks, now I feel quite compelled to do it! :) (just gotta play through it again to notice everything and smell the flowers again)

    So... you tried to appeal this game to your classmates, by spoiling the most emotive finale of nintendo? Aside from that It was a great job

      I see where you're coming from with this but there is a lot to talk about with the finale of the game that relates to what he was discussing, so I think it was important for him to mention it

    I like Mother 3 and especially this kind of details as much as you do, probably. But I do want to say that this video isn't really good, sorry. There are many things interesting to note, true, but almost nothing I heard was a new analysis of your own, just stuff Itoi has mentioned, not to mention many of these are not about psychology at all.
    I still think it's great that you made this, and I understand because it was an introductory class. I don't know if you're studying psychology or it was just a class, but if you're still interested and you wanted to make another video with the knowledge you've picked up since then, I recommend that you focus on one aspect, because Mother 3 has way too many topics to discuss. For example, only family, the chimeras or the modernization.

      Hello, thank you for taking the time in writing out your opinion- and for watching the video. I respect your perspective on the content and it's always nice to receive feedback in aspects that could be improved.
      Though I want to mention a couple of things: the first is that this is not an opinion piece. It was my responsibility to research the game's development and report specific findings to the classroom- not to craft new analyses and interpret them in my own way. Itoi mentioned certain developmental choices (discussed in this video) in an interview (the one you recommended to another user in the comments section): I'm referring to his word exactly for that reason.
      Secondly. I see you agree with the user who had stated this video has nothing to do with psychology- which is completely fine- but a perception I don't feel to be valid. Psychology is a very broad subject for interpretation, and to say this has nothing to do with the field at all is a bit far. The topics I am discussing in this upload are all certainly relatable to the study in some way. The only exception to that is the introduction (though I absolutely have to introduce a basic concept for the story setup and how the game is played to those unfamiliar). The rest of the video delves into familial trauma, Lucas's childhood development, Itoi's approach in making a game for a broader audience and how it would affect young kids playing in real life, exemplifying of how all different types of individuals are accounted for as a representation of his world beliefs, and the incorporation of elements like the optional humor sequences- stemming from his belief that player's shouldn't always necessarily choose the "right" option (to explore all possible outcomes).
      Again, I respect your opinion- I simply wanted to explain my perception on the situation.

      Hey, thanks for responding so politely. It's hard to see that kind of thing in comment sections.
      If you didn't need to do an original analysis, then don't mind my comment about that. I still mantain that the video could have been a little more focused. I understand why you choose the scenes or mechanics you talked about (they offer a deeper meaning, plus you got the author's opinion on the subject), but they did seem like random facts put together, because they don't follow the progression or follow the same line.
      You're right about the last thing. It's not that what you talk about has nothing to do with psychology, because those themes were often tangential to psychology, and sometimes even very related. But from my persepective it wasn't emphasized as much. You mentioned the hot spring scene, for example, and how Itoi wanted someone to understand it as a kid growing up, but not the how or why that connected those two things. I'm starting to think my opinion is as such partially because I already knew the same information, though.
      So, are you still interested in making these kind of videos or have you done any since?

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And thank you for responding polietey as well- you're very well versed in your explaining and I respect that. You make very valid points here. Thank you for furthering your opinion on this- it's immensly helpful.
      I am very interested in making more of these videos and have since followed the construct similarly, though they're more in-line with a traditional "review" format where I explore aspects of the game that really stuck with me. I should have mentioned this, as these are more of my own opinion rather than just "stating the facts". You should check out my Chulip Analysis if you're curious! Thank you for being respectful and articulated :)

      Yuki ! Ouko that was my old Snowball microphone before my current Yeti 😅 the problem could’ve been how I positioned the mic, or it picking up static in another room? I didn’t really know about noise filtering/reduction then
