Thomas was the forgotten one when discussing the best running back of the 1990's. It was always Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith. Thomas is up there with them. He was an all-around player.
Kevin Payton yep exactly. I remember as a kid at end of every season top RBs were Thomas, Smith or Sanders. top WRs were Rice or Reed. for 4-5 years straight.
Thurman is was the first modern running back. He was a threat not only on the ground but through the air. He laid the framework for the prototypical RB of todays era.
From Australia this was the first team that I laid eyes on back in 1990 ( we didn't get much t.v coverage back then) this man was magic to watch many years ago and after watching this video, he still is magic. He is Buffalo. BFFB ( Bill's,forever, forever, Bill's)
Completely agreed....why exactly haven't the Bills retired 83 yet? I always thought the Bills version of the triplets, Jim Kelly, Thurman and Andre Reed was every bit as good as the Cowboys with Aikman, Irvin and Emmitt Smith. Andre's jersey deserves to be up there too. Just my two cents
Barry Sanders, when he was still playing, was asked who he thought the best running back in the NFL. His answer was, "I don't know, but he went to Oklahoma State." Barry and Thurman were famously in the same back field at Oklahoma State. ;) The K-Gun took the no huddle offense to the next level. They made the term "al-purpose yards" a thing. Thurman could catch and run as well rush. He was a duel threat like nobody before him. They changed the way offenses play the game. True Legends.
I met him in Cleveland, Ohio at an NFL Hall of Fame expo. Cool dude actually stopped in the middle of an interview and told me, "Hang on big man I got you wait right there." Security back off immediately. GO BILLS!!!!!
Also, Bills fans out there....I'm curious....Did the Bills never retire OJ Simpson's Jersey....? Or was it retired and then it got "un-Retired" due to all his off field issues?
I can't speak to whether Thurman's a great father, friend or anything else. I will say he was a great football player and his tenacity and talent was the key to the success the Bills had. However, when the going got tough like in super bowl 28 when he fumbled and the cowboys tied the game, he put his tail between his legs and quit. Congratulations Thurman.
